But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she’d feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don’t even speak English. There isn’t even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth’s heart is torn between two young men—both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.
Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she’s had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

My Where Courage Calls Review:
Beth, who has been sick since childhood, feels called to move to western Canada to take a teaching position. She was not prepared for what she had to face. She had never seen such need, in the people and in the town.
After the initial adjustment period, from her families wealth to a poor mining town, Beth is determined to work hard and make a difference in the children’s lives. Beth works through sickness, hardship, homesickness, and bad conditions to teach the children. She also starts English classes for locals who don’t speak it. Through it all, Beth can see God’s hand in taking care of her, and the people in the town. Beth learns that she is stronger than her family thought. Even stronger that she thought she was.
Where Courage Calls is a great read. If you’ve loved Janette Oke’s books in the past, you’ll love this one, too. It’s made even more special since she co-wrote it with her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan. The characters in the book are from all walks of live, and all ages. It’s easy to find someone in the book to identify with.
The ending of Where Courage Calls leaves the story wide open for another book. I look forward to reading any future books in this series.

I read all the Janette Oke books that I could when I was in middle school. I loved them. Had no idea that her daughter wrote with her now! This sounds like a book that I would enjoy, thanks for the review.
