When I was offered the opportunity to receive a When Calls the Heart DVD to review, I was very happy. When Calls the Heart is based on a book of the same name written by Janette Oke. I have loved every book that I have read of hers, and loved every movie that I have seen based on those books.
When Calls the Heart is no exception. Though the story line of the movie doesn’t follow the book, it is still a very good movie. The main character, Elizabeth Thatcher, is a young women in 1910. From a well to do family, she really wants to be a teacher. After discovering a dairy from her Aunt, who was a school teacher that traveled west to teach, Elizabeth is more determined than ever to teach. She lands a teaching position out west, and convinces her parents to let her go.
The movie bounces back and forth between Elizabeth’s story, and her Aunt’s story. At times it can feel a little jerky, but most of the change in stories is easy to keep up with. By the end of the 89 minute movie, Elizabeth has arrived at the poor coal mining town that she will be teaching in. Without any clothes, or teaching materials. The movie ends very abruptly with a cliff hanger. Which means I hope I can hurry and see the next one! lol
Directed by Michael Landon Jr, When Calls the Heart first played on the Hallmark Channel. It was the number one movie of the week on as-supported cable and has led to a television series.
When Calls the Heart is suitable for the whole family to watch together. It’s a great story of a young women following her heart. Of doing the right thing, helping others, and the importance of friends and family.
