Set in 1848, Let God follows the story of husband and wife Levi and Amelia. Levi has decided that it is time for them to travel west He has heard numerous stories of men getting rich from striking gold. Even though Amelia doesn’t want to leave her home, friends, and family, she honors her husband and goes west with him.
They join a caravan, even though it is late in the season, and travel west will be difficult if winter sets in before their arrival. Along the way, they are attacked, savagely. The attack is not shown, though, and you also hear very little. Amelia is the sole survivor. That means she has to bury her own husband. While stranded in the middle of no where. The horses are long gone, and she has limited resources.
Now, Amelia must decide what to do. Stay where she is? Hoping help will arrive before it’s too late? Or set out on foot seeking a house or a town? Amelia decides to take what she can carry and start walking. Which means she doesn’t take very much with her. Including food.
Amelia has to learn to forage for food, start a fire, and keep herself safe from wild animals. Before Amelia gets too far, winter sets in. Now she has to try to keep herself warm while traveling in deep snow on the Oregon Trail.
For the majority of the movie, Amelia doesn’t speak. The actress does a very good job of conveying what Amelia is thinking and feeling with her facial expressions and actions.
Just when Amelia is ready to give up, she comes upon a little Indian boy in the woods. He follows her, even though she tries to stop him. She is afraid his family will come after him and kill her for taking him. Surprisingly, though, no one comes for him. Even though Amelia doesn’t speak his language, and he doesn’t speak English, the two get along very well. Amelia’s new little guide helps her in many ways.
The movie ends when Amelia finds a town. Although, you never see the town, but you can tell that is what she found by her facial expressions. I’m not going to tell you what happens to her little guide boy, that is best seen for yourself.
Let God is not like any movie of life on the prairie or traveling west to live happily ever after that you have ever seen before. It’s also different from any Christian movies you may have seen. There is no direct mention of God. Amelia does have a Bible with her, though. The ending of the movie left me thinking, “What? Wow!”
Let God is a great family movie!
