I can’t believe it’s been over a month since I did a homeschool week in review post! we are still just working steadily along.
Our Homeschool Week in Review
My husband and son were able to go with the homeschool group to the movies on Memorial Day. They saw The Amazing Spider-Man 2. If you have seen it, or are planning on seeing it, I have a The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Discussion Guide that you can download and print.
Speaking of him, my 13 year old son just isn’t doing well in his math book. I’ve always used Rod & Staff math thru 6th grade. He’s still plugging away at the 6th grade book, but is not happy with it. For some reason, it’s just not working for him. So I’m going to pull him off this book, and have him try Khan Academy. No, he hasn’t finished the book yet, but I probably should have made a switch a few months ago. We’ve used Khan for geometry for 3 of our high schoolers and liked it. So I’m going to try it for 6th grade math. He has enjoyed doing math on the computer when we’ve been reviewing websites and programs. I think Khan will work well for him. I’m going to start him on it Monday and give it a two week trial. If he is still struggling, I guess I have a lot more research to do to find a curriculum that works for him.
Speaking of Khan, Abby took the laptop outside on the front porch the other day to work on her geometry. She was quickly surrounded by animals. lol 2 cats ran away right before I took this picture.
She also weed whacked for the first time this year. She really enjoys doing this. Shocking, I know! lol Except she did too much for the first time of the season. She ended up with a couple of small blisters on her hand. And boy, did I hear about them! lol
Abby finished 9th grade a couple of months ago, having started last August. She has since been working on 10th grade. She wants to graduate early. I always let my high school students set their own pace. If they want to graduate early, go for it. It they want to take a slow pace, that’s ok, too. They understand that not graduating is not an option. So I give them a little freedom in what they study, and the timing. It works for us!

How does Kahn Academy work with math? Do they watch a video and do problems on the computer or do they have a worksheet to check what they learned? I have heard of Kahn Academy but never really checked them out.

We just switched math curriculum, too! My 4th grader had been using Saxon for years, but hated doing math (although she is good at it!). We switched to Life of Fred. I’m not really sure how that’s going to work for her, but we’ll give it a try.
Have a great summer!
