I have been thoroughly enjoying watching When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel. When Calls the Heart is a series produced and directed by Michael Landon Jr. and inspired by the best-selling books by Janette Oke. I pretty much love everything about When Calls the Heart. The characters, the time period, the clothing, and the settings.
A feature length film made from episodes of the When Calls the Heart television series, When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence
tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a young high society teacher fighting to make a difference in a prairie town in a part of the Western Frontier known as Coal Valley. As soon as Elizabeth arrives in Coal Valley, she can tell that something is wrong.
The church was burned to the ground a month after a local mining accident. The town is divided over who they think is responsible for the fire and there is only man left to investigate the crime, Canadian Mountie, Jack Thornton. Meanwhile, the head of the mine is scheming to control the town, including the pastor who seems to be losing his faith along with his church.
Elizabeth has been helping little 8-year-old mute Rosaleen Sullivan’s family. Little Rosaleen hasn’t spoken since her father died in the mine explosion. Elizabeth reaches out to the little girl once again as they share lunch. But when Elizabeth is called away and then returns, Rosaleen is missing! Could the fire and the missing girl be related? The town must now come together to find her.
When Calls the Heart is suitable for the whole family to watch together. There is a happy ending to this story. The person that burned the church down is caught, and little Rosaleen starts speaking again. Shhh…..you didn’t hear that from me…..I don’t want to giveaway the best parts!

I haven’t seen any of the episodes yet, but I would love to. This was probably my favorite series that Janette Oke wrote, because I grew up in southern Alberta and was familiar with many of the places featured. 🙂

I have seen the whole first season and loved it! I read the Janette Oke book series when I was little. Although the tv series has deviated from the original books, it is still quite enjoyable. I love that it is safe for the whole family to watch. I got my youngest daughter hooked on it and now we are not so patiently waiting for season 2 🙂
