I recently received the book Motivate Your Child – A Christian Parent’s Guide to Raising Kids Who Do What They Need to Do Without Being Told to review. Motivate Your Child is written by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN, who are the founders of the National Center for Biblical Parenting and Biblical Parenting University.
Motivate Your Child
I have 6 children, and getting them motivated to do their work has often been very hard. I want my kids to be able to do what they know the are supposed to do, without my having to repeatedly tell them what to do. Some of my children have learned this skill better than others. I was very interested to read Motivate Your Child, since I do still have two kids under 18 at home. I really liked the way Motivate Your Child presented everything we need to know to help our children learn to be self motivated.
The book starts with talking out the conscience. The authors discuss how the four areas of the conscience, how they are developed, and how we can encourage it’s development in our children. There is a checklist to help you see what areas your child is already strong in, and what areas they need to improve in.
Motivate Your Child then moves on to convictions. How convictions are developed, how we can teach convictions to our children, and how we can use to Bible to form convictions.
I like that the book includes a chapter on when kids make mistakes. Because, of course, we all make mistakes. This chapter covers how guilt works, and how we can use correction to teach wisdom. Parents will learn how to correct their children when they make mistakes, while at the same time increasing their lives, not diminishing them.
Every parent, at some point, has had to deal with a child that is telling a lie. The chapter on integrity & lying is very helpful. We learn how to encourage integrity and compassion in our kids.
Part 2 of Motivate Your Child is about the spiritual development of kids. We learn about family time, how it incorporate it into our lives, and how to use family time to develop strong relationships with our kids, and sharing our faith. The book shows us how by practicing our faith we are showing our kids that God is real. There is a chapter on leading your child to Christ. You will also find help in getting your kids interested in the Bible.
I really liked how the authors gave sample discussions between parent and child in Motivate Your Child. Whether your children are toddlers, teenagers, or every age in between, you will find help and support in training and motivating your children. Even I, with 6 children ages 14-28, learned a few new tips and techniques to use.
