Ragamuffin DVD Review & Giveaway

I recently received a Ragamuffin dvd to review. Ragamuffin is based on the life of Rich Mullins, a musical prodigy who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. Don’t know who Rich Mullins is? That’s ok. You’re sure to recognize some of the songs he wrote that are still being played today.

Rich Mullins was raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a callous father. Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. In fact, this movie has many flashbacks to his childhood and conversations with his father. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church (he wouldn’t cut his hair or dress up), Rich refused to let his struggles with his own darkness tear him away from a God he was determined to love.

You will follow Rich as he travels around the country singing, as he moves to Nashville and to Wichita. Rich desired most of all to live a life of honest and reckless faith amidst a culture of religion and conformity.

None of us are perfect. We all have problems. Rich’s life story in Ragamuffin shows that God can use us in spite of our problems.

Here’s some more information about Rich Mullins:

Singer and songwriter Richard Wayne “Rich” Mullins was best known for his worship song “Awesome God” which has been embraced as modern classics by many Christians. His music has been covered by many artists, including Caedmon’s Call, Amy Grant, Jars of Clay, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, John Tesh, and Hillsong United. Mullins’ musical career formally began with Zion Ministries in the late 1970s, where he wrote music and performed with a band called Zion.  Mullins first solo hit, “Awesome God,” appeared on his third album and brought his music to a wider audience. Rich Mullins was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) on April 29, 2014.

Ragamuffin is rated PG-13 for thematic elements and smoking. There are a couple of “words”, and you see alcohol, and people suffering the effects for alcohol consumption. If you’re going to watch it with under 13’s, I suggest you watch it first yourself, before watching it together as a family.

Here’s my favorite quote from the movie:

Rich: I love what you said, that God loves us for who we are, not who we should be, because none of us are who we should be.

Other guy: That’s the heart of the ragamuffin gospel right there. Ragamuffins are the unsung assembly of saved sinners who are little in their own sight and aware of their brokenness and powerless before God. A ragamuffin knows he’s only a beggar at the door of God’s mercy.
