Saturday on the Farm

September 26, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The weather has been so nice here this week. Only in the 80’s during the day.  I went for a walk this morning and here are some of the things I saw.

The Zinnia on the front porch.

Day Lilly in the Bible Garden.

Rose in the Bible Garden.

We have a lot of green tomatoes in the garden.

We even have tomato blossoms still!

This is a beet. I found 2 of them. Who knows what the chickens did with the rest of them. I couldn’t find the carrots, either. I need better fencing next year!

We have a total of 4 squash plants. I have no idea if they are yellow or zucchini. Yep, they chickens struck again, and did away with the seed package markers my husband put out. I’m hoping for zucchini.  Here are 2 of the squash plants

I found this little guy near the squash. He’s not exactly little. I’m just thankful he didn’t jump on me while I was taking his picture!

Do you have anything growing in your garden still?

Frugal Fall Decorating

September 25, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I normally don’t decorate for Fall until November 1st. We don’t celebrate Halloween, so I don’t want people to think that my fall decorations are Halloween decorations. So I’m not sure why I’ve been in a Fall decorating mood this week, but I have been! I have a fall wreath on the front door, and a scarecrow on the back door. I have fall placemats out. I also pulled out my fall smelling candles.

Today I was roaming around the house looking for something fallish to use as a centerpiece for the dining room table. I found a low flat basket that I normally use in the kitchen, and 3 candles in glass jars. The large one is my favorite cinnamon candle.

I needed something as a filler, so I sent two of the kids outside with a basket to look. I told them to get acorns or what ever kind of nuts they came across. The brought me back all these acorns. They were just what I needed for the basket centerpiece.
It is okay to use used candles in a centerpiece. In fact, if your putting new candles in your centerpiece, or anywhere else for that matter, please light the candles for a few seconds, then put them out. A candle that has never been lit is cold and uninviting. A candle that has been lit, speaks of quiet dinners around the table or the family gathered in the living room spending time together. So, even if your not going to light them on a daily basis, please light your candles at least once when you put them out.

The next time your looking for seasonal decorations, look around your  house and your yard! There are frugal treasures out there just waiting to be discovered!

Homeschool Week In Review – Week 8

September 24, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Our family has been making car models for years. It’s a great family hobby. We’ve been going to shows for about 13 or 14 years now. The shows are a day long event, and lots of fun.

Well, ok, the whole day isn’t fun. There is lots of down time while the cars are being judged. That can get quite boring. And lets just say it was quite challenging with babies and toddlers. I constantly had to be on guard to keep little hands from touching other peoples cars. Now that our youngest is 10. I no longer have to worry as much.

Last Saturday, they attended a show and had a great time. Due to my still not feeling up to par, I stayed home. And Hannah, 14, opted not to attend.  So the two of us had a Love Comes Softly Movie Marathon with all you can eat chocolate. All 8 movies in a row! It took just under 12 hours to watch them all.

Anyway, here are pictures from the model car show.

Zach, 10, at the show with some of his cars. He won 2 – 1st Place trophies.

Abby, 11, with some of hers. She won 1 trophy, a 1st Place.

Calen, 15, with his cement mixer he built. It won a 1st Place trophy, Best of Show, which is a very large trophy, and a Best Engine plaque. He also won a 2nd Place trophy, 3rd Place trophy, a Best Interior plaque for other cars he entered.

Here’s a close-up.
My husband also won 2 trophies and 1 plaque. Here they all are on top of our entertainment center in the living room.

A total of 9 trophies and 3 plaques. A great pay-off for the months and months of work that can go into each car. Of course, the younger ones don’t spend as much time on theirs as the older ones and adults do.

Our church as an Old Fashioned Day once a year. This year, Hannah decided to make a new skirt. We didn’t have any patterns for this style, so she made it without a pattern. It has a waistband (not elastic) with a button & buttonhole. Her first buttonhole! She did a great job. She also made a matching drawstring purse.

It’s been busy around here, but they still managed to fit in book work. 🙂  We are still reading The Dawn Treader out loud, also.
Here are a few homeschool links that I found interesting and helpful this week:
The Pioneer woman has a great article on Erasing the Fear of Homeschooling. Useful for those new to homeschooling as well as veteran homeschoolers.
Free Childrens books downloads, because one can never have too many books. 🙂
W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is great if your kids (or you) are interested in learning html and setting up a website.
I also liked reading Homeschooling Isn’t What It Used To Be, Or Is It?

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
