Saturday on the Farm

October 3, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

It’s been a good week on the farm. The weather has been so nice. It’s been getting down into the 50’s at night. This morning when we got up, it was in the 40’s!
Everything is still growing, though. Here is our big Butterfly Bush in the front yard. This is the bush that I talked about a few weeks ago. After it finished blooming, we trimmed it back. I had read that if you trimmed Butterfly bushes back, that they would bloom again. Can  you see all the new growth and flowers on this bush?

Here’s more of a close-up. Trimming the bushes back really does work. It’s blooming again!

My new favorite flower this summer is the Zinnia. This is the first year that I have grown them. (shocking, I know!)

They are so pretty!

And the butterflies like them, too.

I have them in pots on the front porch. The Butterfly bush above is right off the porch. So it’s like a Butterfly playground out there. We can sit in the living room and see all kinds of butterflies outside the windows.

On the animal front, all is well. The male goat is in rut. Which is a good thing, except we should change his name to Stinky. lol Your alright, as long as you don’t get to close, or stand down wind of him. lol

Next week, I’ll have a picture update of our fall vegetable garden.

I have discontinued the Saturday on the Farm linky until the spring. If you have a garden or farm post that you would like to share, please leave it in the comments.

The Mysterious Island – Movie Review & Giveaway

October 1, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

themysteriousislands

I was recently sent The Mysterious Island DVD to review. This movie follows a team of researchers and a 16 year old boy to the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos are a chain of island, (Ecuador is the closest land mass) that Darwin used to prove his theory of evolution. Did he really prove it, though?

I learned a lot in this movie. I learned some things I didn’t know about Darwin and his theory. This documentary has some fascinating video of birds and other creatures. How about a salt sneezing marine Iguana? The under the ocean video was incredible, too. Here’s a clip:

Our entire family loved this movie. From adults down to our youngest who is a 10 year old boy (you know how hard it is to get them to sit still!) were fascinated with the movie. No one wanted to leave the room, in case we missed something. My husband did leave the room for a minute, and missed the bird with a bright blue beak and bright blue webbed feet. And I mean bright blue!

We will definitely watch this movie again. There is so much information packed into it, that one really must watch it more than once. If you’ve ever wondered how Darwin came up with his theory of evolution, you’ll be interested in this movie. The researchers set out to prove his theory wrong. You’ll have to watch the movie to see what information they unveil. You know I can’t give it all away!

You’ll also like this movie for all the wonderful wildlife video. We all thoroughly enjoyed seeing and learning about lots of species that we had never seen or heard of before.

I highly recommend this movie.

Not only did they send me a copy of The Mysterious Island to review, they sent me one to give away!

If you would like to win your own copy of The Mysterious Island, just leave a comment on this post.

How easy is that?

Just leave me a comment and your entered to win! This giveaway is open until midnight October 15, 2010. After that, I will use random.org to pick a winner.

W. W. W. Wednesday – My Reading List

September 30, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I totally skipped the next book on my list and read something else instead.  I’ll get to Aslan this week! I’m almost through with Reading the Bible in 90 Days! I’m on schedule to finish by Saturday, which is Day 90. I’m hoping to finish on Friday. this has taken a lot of time, but it has been sooooo worth it!

* What are you currently reading? –   The Torah Blessing by Larry Huch. I am totally enjoying this book! I like how he tells us the Hebrew word that is used and how it it translated. If your interested in Bible history, the Biblical Feasts, and how we can be blessed by learning about these, you’ll love this book. I’m about half way through now, and I have learned so much.

I am also reading The Dawn Treader out loud to the kids.

* What did you recently finish reading? –  Fool-Proofing Your Life – How to deal Effectively with the Impossible People in Your Life by Jan Silvious  The world is filled with difficult people. Gain the tools  you need to get along with others and conduct your relationships in a manner that honors God and preserves your sanity.

This was such an awesome book!  For some reason, I thought this book would be geared toward the workplace, I don’t know where I got that idea. This book starts with giving a Biblical definition of a fool, and takes you through identifying the fools in your life. Whether they are at work, at home, or at church. Whether your fool is your co-worker, friend, family member, child, or spouse, this book helps you learn to deal effectively with them. There are several pages at the end of every chapter with Bible verses, questions to ask yourself, a few quizzes to help you identify your problem areas with your fool. I highly recommend this book! I found it so helpful in dealing with my fool. It also helped me to clarify what I want in my life, the things that are important to me, and how to get there with my fool. I think this book would also be helpful to older teens.

* What do you think you’ll read next? –  Knowing Aslan The author uses parallels to lead the reader to an understanding of Christ and what He did for them by drawing lessons from The Chronicles of Narnia.

In addition to reading the above books, this week I continued a Read the Bible in 90 days program. So that’s keeping me busy reading, also.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
