Saturday on the Farm

September 11, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Saturday on the Farm

The weather has been cooler. Which is such a relief after our really hot and humid summer. It rained all day yesterday. A nice steady, soaking rain that is so good for the garden. It’s raining again today. This should really give our fall garden a good boost.

Of course, all the rain means I wasn’t able to get any pictures to share. I did hang out the front door and take a picture of the rooster this morning. Poor little guy. His tail feathers are so water logged they won’t stand up.

The kids did find an interesting caterpillar the other day. It was  a Spice Bush Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillar. Their host plants are the Spice Bush and the Sassafras. I don’t think we have any Spice Bush, but I know we have Sassafras. The kids found him in the side yard, and they had to go up in the woods to get sassafras leaves for it, so I’m not sure how this little guy ended up in the side yard. Anyway, here’s his picture.

You should have heard the kids try to explain to us what the caterpillar looked like. lol If your kids came in and told you they found a caterpillar with a snakes head, what would you say? lol But they were right! If you follow the link above, you can see a clearer picture. He is now living in a jar in the house with sassafras leaves and a stick. He started to make a cocoon, so hopefully we will have a butterfly hatch and set free.

It’s time for the Saturday on the Farm Carnival!

Homeschool Links

September 9, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

There are so many great homeschool sites on the web, including some awesome blogs. Here are some that I found helpful and interesting this week.

You can print out the Dolch Sight Words.

I loved Top 10 Reasons Why I Homeschool at Homeschool-Articles.com.

You can make oobleck! I remember a few years ago, the kids did an experiment with cornstarch and water. If you insert your foot really slowing, it will go it. But if you put your foot on it quickly, you can stand on it. They loved that!

How to pray for Missionaries As Christians, we should pray for our Missionaries, and this was very helpful.

Mad Libs Online! I remember doing Mad Libs and loving them. Here’s a digital version.

The Art & Architecture of the Tabernacle of Moses is awesome if your studying the Old Testament.

How about a Carnival of Homeschooling? There are lots of great links.

Putting Duplo Blocks to work in the school room.

I loved reading Back to School For the Year Round Homeschooler.

Weird, Unsocialized Homeschooler has some great Homeschool Storage ideas.

Homeschool Storage Strategies What homeschooler doesn’t need more storage ideas?!

Download & print Homeschool Planner Pages. They also have a lot of other printables as well.

Raising Arrows has a great article on A Lifestyle of Learning Grammer

W.W.W. Wednesday – My Reading List

September 8, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

* What are you currently reading? –   God in the Garden This is an awesome gardening book that has a section for every week of the year. I love this book.

I’m also reading The Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Food This book is about real food. haha Unprocessed food, that is. I’m still in Chapter One – Food Throughout History  It’s very interesting.

* What did you recently finish reading? –  I’ll Bring the Chocolate by Karen Porter  I really loved this book.  It’s about womens friendships, how to strengthen them, and how to be a better friend. The author ties friendship to chocolate. There is a section at the end of every chapter with questions, how to relate what you learned in the chapter to your friends, a prayer, and a chocolate recipe. The recipes look so good. I plan on trying some of them.

See You in a Hundred Years I really enjoyed this book about a family that moves from New York City to a farm. They change everything on the farm and in the house back to what it would have been in 1900. Then they live that way for a year. The author writes about what they do to get ready for their year long experiment, and what it was like to re-enter the 21st century. The only problem I had with this book was the language. So be forewarned about the language.

* What do you think you’ll read next? – Fool-Proofing Your Life – How to deal Effectively with the Impossible People in Your Life by Jan Silvious  The world is filled with difficult people. Gain the tools  you need to get along with others and conduct your relationships in a manner that honors God and preserves your sanity.

In addition to reading the above books, this week I continued a Read the Bible in 90 days program. So that’s keeping me busy reading, also.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:16-17 NKJV
