Cast of Characters – Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God

September 15, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Cast of CharactersCommon People in the Hands of an Uncommon God

By Max Lucado

Book Description

Some of the most powerful stories from the Bible will come alive for today’s readers through these
inspiring selections from the writings of Max Lucado. Max provides a compelling look at the most
high-impact moments in the biblical narrative, drawn from his previous 20+ years of writing.
At the end of each chapter will be study guide questions so the reader can go deeper into this
scripture.
Extraordinary stories are told about the following characters:
Mary, Peter, Matthew, Joseph, Nicodemus, Woman at the Well, David, Esther, Job, The Samaritan Woman, John, Rich Young Man.

I really loved this book! I love the authors writing style. I have a few of his other books, and really enjoy reading them. When I read the Bible, I often wonder about the peoples lives, what they did, and how they lived. Guess I’m just curious like that. I guess that’s why I love biographies so much. This book gives us a glimpse into what their lives were like.

How might Mephibosheth felt when he was the only one of his family left alive. What did he think when King David sent for him? What did Lazarus think & feel when he heard Jesus calling his name?

Those are just two examples of the stories in this book. In Cast of Characters, Max Lucado uses both Old and New Testament examples of what God can do in common people lives.

“Like a pesky sibling, your past follows you wherever you go. Isn’t there anyone who sees you for who you are and not what you did? Yes. There is One who does. Your King. When God speaks of you, he doesn’t mention your plight, pain or problem; he lets you share his glory. He calls you his child.”

Don’t we all have things in our past we would rather forget? Who wants to be reminded of what we did wrong? I just love this quote from the Mephibosheth chapter. God doesn’t remember all the things that we did or the times that we failed Him. He sees what we can be, if we just turn our lives over to Him.

Sometimes, it seems that my problems are so big, so complicated that they will never be resolved. I found the David chapter very encouraging.

“Is your list of blessings four times as long as your list of complaints? Is your mental file of hope four times as thick as your mental file of dread? Are you four times as likely to describe the strength of God as you are the demands of your day? No? Then David is your man……A rough -edged walking wonder of God who neon-lights this truth:

Focus on giants – you stumble.
Focus on God – your giants tumble.

Lift your eyes, giant-slayer. The God who made a miracle out of David stands ready to make one out of you.”

I love how the author puts you there with your Bible heros, comparing their lives to ours. Bringing us to where God wants us to be.

“Mark it down. God does not save us because of what we’ve done. Only a puny god could be bought with tithes. Only an egotistical god would be impressed with our pain. Only a temperamental god could be satisfied by sacrifices. Only a heartless god would sell salvation to the highest bidders.   And only a great God does for his children what they can’t do for themselves. That is the message of Paul: “For what the law was powerless to do….God did” Romans 8:3 NIV

Oh, how thankful I am that my God is not judging me on what I do, how much money I have, how much I hurt or sacrifice. He loves me just because. And He loves you, too! Just as you are.

God used (and uses!) people to change the world. People! Not saints or superhumans or geniuses, but people. Crooks, creeps, lovers, and liars – he uses them all. And what they may lack in perfection, God makes up for in love.”

God can use little, old me, just as I am to help others in His name. To bring others to Him. To glorify His name.  No need to be perfect first. This is an impossibility anyway. Just come to Him with a willing heart. He’s there waiting…..

I highly recommend The Cast of Characters Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God by Max Lucado.
This book is full of inspiring stories of some of the authors favorite Biblical characters – all of whom were very human and imperfect…….just like us.

It’s the beginning of Week 11!

Due to the holiday last week, I didn’t do an update. Now here we are at the beginning of week 11. I am behind in my reading, for the second week in a row.

I am trying to read 2 sections most days so I can get caught up.

I will not quit. I plan on finishing on schedule.  I have really benefited from participating in The Bible in 90 Days. Therefore, I will keep reading until I finish.

I’m looking forward to this weeks reading! Which will be extra challenging! And extra rewarding!

Freezer Cooking Session

September 14, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I started my freezer cooking yesterday when I boiled 10 pounds of chicken leg quarters. I put 3 – 3 cup bags into the freezer.  I used 4 cups of the chicken to make 2 Chicken Bacon Subs. I can’t wait to try these. lol I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to leave this in the freezer. They look so good!

I also got 2 – 8 cups bags of chicken broth, and 1 – 2 1/2 cup bag put in the freezer. Which I bagged up today, after scooping the fat off the top this morning.

I cooked one pound of bacon, using 1/2 cup in the subs, and placing the rest of the slices in the freezer.

Today I cooked 1 pound of Great Northern Beans, which yielded 3 – 2 cup bags of cooked beans in the freezer.I also cooked 2 pounds of Kidney Beans, which yielded 6 – 2 cup bags of cooked beans in the freezer.

I made these Cheddar Cheese Coins They can be frozen, either the raw dough or the baked coins. I froze them after baking. I did sample one (ok, two!), and it (they) was (were) so good! I think these are going to be a new family favorite. You know, when I actually take them out of the freezer and let them try them. lol I put 60 of the little crackers in the freezer. If I’m careful with rationing, I might be able to get 2 snacks out of them. I think I will double the recipe next time, and I think I’ll cut them just a little thinner.

I got 3 – 2 1/2 dozen bags of my favorite Chocolate Cookies in the freezer, also. I kept over 2 dozen out of the freezer, also. See, I do let them eat!

I didn’t get the meatloaf done today. I will make that tomorrow. I have 5 pounds of hamburger, and I’m planning on making 3 meatloafs. One for dinner tomorrow, and 2 for the freezer.    Edit: My son helped me make the meatloafs and there are now 2 residing in my freezer.  🙂

I’m happy with the amount of food I got in the freezer. Even though in the past I would have been able to crank that amount out in one morning, instead of spread out over three days. When I didn’t have to sit down in between everything, or work sitting at the table. I’m just thankful to have this much done to make things easier on the days I don’t feel well enough to cook.

Anybody have any must great freezer recipes I should try?

What’s For Dinner?

September 13, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We had a lot of macaroni salad leftover from Labor Day last week. So I added more shredded carrots, diced tomatoes, chopped chicken from the freezer & more mayo. It turned into a nice chicken pasta salad with very little effort.  I was able to use all the leftovers, and thanks to the freezer cooking chicken, we had a great meal.

I made these Carrot & Sweet Potatoe Tzimmes on Friday. They were so good. I used sweet potatoes from the freezer. We all really liked them, and I will be making them again.

Saturday has turned into pizza night here, so I changed my menu plan. When I’m well enough, we’ll make homemade pizza, if not, the pizzas from Walmart’s Deli are pretty good.

Saturday – pizza night – Pizza, carrot sticks

Sunday – sandwich day – Turkey sandwiches, tomatoes, lettuce

Monday – chicken – Chicken Wings, homemade baked french fries, salad

Tuesday – beef – Meatloaf, baked potatoes, pattypan squash

Wednesday – super simple – leftovers, salad

Thursday – chicken – Chicken tacos

Friday – Friday Night Fire/Beef – Steak, rice, yellow squash

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:16-17 NKJV
