Blooming Flowers

August 25, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We finally got a break from the heat and humidity. It’s only been in the 80’s the last two days, with a breeze! It feels like fall already. But I can’t be fooled. I know we have at least 2 months of hot weather before it cools down for fall. We have enjoyed the last couple days though!

The Hibiscus bushes have all gone to seed.

Here’s a Morning Glory I found growing on a cedar tree.

I finally got some blooms on the flowers on the front porch.

A very pretty pink flower. I’m pretty sure this is a Cosmos, but the plant take disappeared.  Unfortunately, this pretty pink flower met a horrible death in a laser sword fight.

Here’s it’s pretty pink self in the house in a glass bottle brightening my house. I have to say, I almost cried when my son brought it to me. Yeah, the some son who had wielded the laser sword.

EDITED to add these 2 pictures:  I discovered the above flowers sprouted other little flowers in the center!
See? I was so surprised & delighted to see the little flowers!
Someone said in the comments that this wasn’t Cosmos, that it was a Zinnia.

End of edit…..

My daughter trimmed the big, white butterfly bush for me. It only had a couple of blooms left on it.

See how big it is? My husband had trimmed it back in the spring, before it started growing. It sure grew this summer!

She did a good job trimming all the branches she could reach.

My husband finished the top part when he got home. I’m told it will bloom again this year after trimming. This is the first year we are trying it.

Bible in 90 Days – Week 8 Update

August 24, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

It’s the beginning of Week !

I’m still doing well with my reading. I’m glad I read extra during the week, because I needed that cushion this weekend.

I will have another busy Saturday this coming weekend, so I will be reading a couple extra chapters each day again.  I’d rather work ahead a little, then try and catch up when I get behind.

I loved reading Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes.  I’m now in Isiah, and it’s a lot of prophecy.

My kids are amazed that I have read so much My 14 yo daughter had wanted to participate, also. But due to her busy summer schedule, she would have been unable to keep up. I expect her to participate in the next round. Who knows? I might do it again with her! Can you ever read the Bible through too many times? I don’t think so!

I’m looking forward to this weeks reading!

Potatoes Anna

August 23, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I got this recipe from a television program about 10 years ago.

Potatoes Anna

11″ oven proof skillet  (I love my cast iron skillet.)
3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
6 baking potatoes, peeled & thinly sliced, dry well

Brush melted butter on bottom & sides of skillet. Layer potatoes in circles in pan.

Brush on more melted butter between layers and salt & pepper. Keep adding layers.

Brown on top of stove, without stirring. Cook in oven 450* for 15 minutes. I did turn the broiler on to brown the top.

Here you can see all the layers in the pan.

These potatoes were very good. Everyone loved them. I think some onions would be good in it. But I like onions in everything. I also plan on trying Chives from my herb garden in it.

Saturday On The Farm

August 22, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Saturday on the Farm

We got a break from the heat this week. Which was so welcome! We got a lot of rain this week, though.

I had planted a few vine pomegranate melon seeds in the spring, but I never saw any plants. Either they didn’t come up, something ate them when they were little, or my helpers weeded them. Either way, I didn’t get any of my little melons. The lady from church that had given me my first one a few years ago found out I didn’t grow any thing year and gave me one. I enjoyed having it. When it started to go soft, I cut it open to save the seeds. We have tried them in the past, and they taste like mild cucumbers.

These little melons go by many different names. Vine Pomegranate, Plum Granny Melon, or Queen Anne’s Pocketbook Melon. The date back at least 1,000, according to what I have read. In the Victorian Era, they carried them in their pockets. They used them as perfume & to mask odors.

I haven’t carried any in my pocket, but I love the way they smell. I love that I can walk into a room and smell them. It’s kinda of a melonish aroma, but not straight melon. It’s hard to describe.

For such a small melon, they have a lot of seeds!

It’s a fun addition to your garden.

We got the fall plantings in. We planted lettuce, spinach, peas, green beans, carrots, beets, and I think they put cabbage in. Our first frost isn’t normally until sometime in November, so we have time for everything to grow.

I actually like fall gardening better. There are less bugs, and the weather seems to cooperate better. In a couple of weeks the temps will cool down to only the 80’s during the day. Even until the end of October, we have temps at least in the 70’s during the day.

Check & see what your first frost date is, then check the back of the seed package for “days to harvest”. You might be able to plant another crop where you are, too.

It’s time for the Saturday on the Farm Carnival!

To participate, just write a post about your homestead, farm, farmette, or the tomato plant on your deck. Your cows, goats, chicken, or your favorite kitty cat.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
