Re-Purposing Flower Arrangements

June 22, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 5 Comments

Ever since I moved the plants outside for the summer, this corner has been empty. I didn’t know what to do with it, and didn’t want to go buy anything new.

The other day, I thought about it some more, and realized that I had a flower arrangement in my bedroom that would look really nice in the living room.
So I moved it to the living room.

I had also recently acquired the books. Well, they are actually fake books, that open like a box. I could actually store stuff inside the books. I haven’t put anything in there yet, but I just might think of something that I want to hide from the kids. lol

I also found a new home for the guitar that was standing in the corner.

I’m happy with the way it turned out. I haven’t even missed the flower arrangement in the bedroom. I need to remember to do this more often. Re-purposing flower arrangements and knick-knacks is a great, frugal way to redecorate.

Rescuing Electronic Devices

June 16, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 1 Comment

My kids seem to have a knack of getting their electronic devices wet, whether it be their cell phones or MP3 players. I have lost track of the number of times that they have put their MP3’s through the washing machine.

The first thing to do when you discover that your electronics have gotten wet, is make sure YOU DON’T TURN IT ON !!

Turning on a wet MP3 or cell phone will completely fry it, and give you no chance to rescue it.

After you make sure no one turns it one, put the MP3 or cell phone down in a bowl of rice. Yes, rice. Make sure the device is completely surround by at least an inch of rice. Brown or white rice, it doesn’t matter. I haven’t tried instant, but imagine it would work, also.

Leave the device in the rice for several days. A minimum of 3 days. The take it out of the rice and try turning it on.

We have been able to rescue several MP3 using this technique. Some MP3’s a couple of times.

Displaying Wall Maps

June 9, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 1 Comment

I posted a picture of our school room earlier this year. As you can see, we don’t have very much open wall space.

Where are we supposed to hang the wall maps?

So I thought about when I was in school, they had maps on pull down rollers. Remember those?

So I set out to make one for our school room.

I bought a roller shade to fit our window, and had my husband make a wooden cornice box. I bought the shade at Walmart for $25, not exactly cheap, but cheaper than building a bigger room! The wood was given to us, so no expense there. The shade is mounted on the wall, with the cornice box over it. There is actually room inside the box to mount another shade in front of the other one for even more display space.

In addition to more “wall” space for hanging maps or other posters, we also gained a display shelf. We have Bible Drill trophies, soda cans from other countries that Missionaries have given to us, as well as a couple of other items. The kids even “decorated” it with an autographed bumper sticker from an Austins Bridge concert we went to.

You can hang any posters that you want, they just have to be a thinner paper. I have a multiplication poster that is on poster board, and the shade won’t go all the way up because of the thickness of the poster.

Mom, I’m Bored!!

June 2, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 1 Comment

It’s the “Mom, I’m Bored” Special Edition of Works for Me Wednesday.

When my kids say they are bored, I give them work to do. Even visiting kids know not to let me here them say they are bored.

I asked my kids what they would want me to say, when they said “Mom, I’m bored!”.

Zach, age 10 next month!, said, “Play the Wii for as many hours as you want to.” um……. NO!

Abigail, age 11, said, “Bring a kitten in the house and give me a paying job.” Ah, she’s willing for work for money!

Hannah, age 14 said, “I’ll buy you a new book!”

Calen, age 15 said, “You can play on the computer and the Wii, and I’ll let you rearrange the entire house. Here’s the keys, go take a drive.” Yeah, he likes to organize the house, problem is, we can’t find anything after he does! And the driving thing? NO!!!

So, You can ask your kids now, before they are actually bored during their summer vacation, what they would want you to say. Then when they actually say they are bored, you can give them their ideas!

Herb Drawer

May 26, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy Leave a Comment

I first wrote about my spice drawer way back in 2007.

The drawer is much fuller now. But I still love having all the herbs in the drawer next to the stove. I have my knives in there, also. So convenient when I’m cooking.

My baking spices are in a cabinet on the other side of the kitchen. So I guess, technically, the drawer is an herb drawer as it holds all the cooking herbs and such.

Having my herbs in a drawer still Works for Me!

Homemade Dish Scrubber

May 18, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 2 Comments

I usually keep a metal dish scrubber on hand for my cast iron pans. Our last one fell apart last week, and I forgot to put a new one on the shopping list. oops!

Today I needed to scrub a pan. What to do? I remembered reading that some people make there own scrubbies out of orange and onion bags. I had an orange bag, so I used it.

I tied it in knots, and it worked great as a scrubbie!

The best part was I didn’t have to go to the store just so I could wash dishes. You know I can’t go in and just buy a scrubbie! lol

Cole Slaw Recipe Needed

May 5, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 1 Comment

It’s Works For Me Wednesday Backwards Edition this week!

One of my children has requested that I make cole slaw. I have never made cole slaw before, so I need a recipe!

I would like it to not be too tart, or not too sweet. And I would like to make the dressing from scratch.

Is that asking too much?

So, if you have a recipe for cole slaw that you can share, my kids will be very happy. 🙂

Thanks!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
