I recently received the books Grace Unplugged and Own It to review. Grace Unplugged is based on the motion picture of the same name. Own It, mentioned in the film, helps you discover what it means to really “own” your personal faith rather than just automatically following in the footsteps of parents, friends, or other influencers.
When Grace encounters her own music break of a lifetime, the sudden dive into the “real world” puts her deeper beliefs to the test. Pop super stardom is just within reach but appears to require some spiritual compromise. Will Grace reject her faith, or will she own it?
Grace Unplugged stars AJ Michalka (Super 8) and Kevin Pollak (A Few Good Men) with performances by award-winning artists Chris Tomlin and Jamie Grace.

My Grace Unplugged Review:
Grace’s story is typical of many teenagers. She wants to get out from under her parents control and live her live the way she wants to. For Grace, that also means leaving her faith behind as she strives to make it as a singer. She has many important decisions to make, unfortunately, she makes a few mistakes along the way. Grace finds out the “real world” isn’t that great. She now has an important decision to make. Will she continue with her music career, not matter what, or will she return to her faith, and her family? I think many people, young and not so young, will be able to identify with Grace. What so goes through is something others go through. Not the singing career part, but the decision of whether to follow the world, or to follow God.
I really enjoyed reading Grace Unplugged. Overall, it is a great book. The only thing in the book, and the movie, that you might want to be cautious about with your children, is 18 year old Grace drinking alcohol. The movie is rated PG.

My Own It Review:
I haven’t finished reading Own It yet. This is not a book that you can read through quickly. Own It challenges you to find out what you believe, what you feel, and why. There are several short testamonies included in the book, so you can see what owning it looks like in the lives of others. I have been reading a section or two of this book at a time, with time to think about what I have read. I want my faith to be real, something that others can see in me. I want to own it. This is so important. We should not be Christians in name only. I’m going to have my teenagers read this book as soon as I finish it. They need to make sure they own their faith, too. Not just go to church because they were raised in church.
The movie Grace Unplugged will be in theaters October 4th. I really want to go see go it!
