WFMW – Winter Exercise for Kids

January 6, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Since it’s Backwards Week at Works For Me Wednesday, I get to ask you a question!

We are having a bitterly cold winter here in Kentucky, with lots of snow and some ice thrown in for fun (NOT!).

It is way too cold for the kids to play outside at all when the high is in the teens or twentys.

The kids are going stir crazy, which is making me crazy.

We do have a mini trampoline that the kids jump on, but they get bored with that quick, and most days don’t even want to jump on it at all.

We got a Wii for Christmas. And while that is more active than other video games, not all of it counts as exercise. Boxing does, boxing is hard! We are getting the Wii Fit, our Walmart has been sold out of it. Hopefully that will be good for us to use for exercise.

Does anyone have any ideas for indoor exercise for kids aged 9, 11, 14 and 15?

Are they competitive? Maybe they could have sit up and push up contests. Maybe you could borrow a workout video at the library?

Is there a local gym where they can go run around? Or an indoor pool that's not too expensive. Some collages have good deals for community members.

As far as the competition thing goes you could set up a complete fitness challenge and have them try to beat their own records each week for doing crunches, pushups etc. in a certain amount of time. Or you could do some family yoga.

The Wii Fit will help, though Wii Active or Wii Outdoor Adventure might be more for kids than the Wii Fit.

I would set up a round robin of activities: sit ups, push ups, lunges, squats, jogging in place, etc.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I sure appreciate the recipe. One question: what is herbal shampoo? How often do you rec using this face soap/wash? TIA!

Do you belong to a YMCA? Or are they involved in any sports outside the home? There are indoor soccer leagues, swimming lessons, and other options available.

I bought a kids yoga dvd for my daughter and she seems to enjoy it. the other thing I have seen is setting up obstacle courses through out your house. while it might cause clutter for the game it really wears them out.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas! We live in the hills of Kentucky, so there is no indoor pool or YMCA anywhere near us.

I'm going to have to check on the Wii Active and Outdoor Adventure. I haven't heard of those. I also heard that EA sports Active for the Wii is good for kids.

The indoor obstacle course sounds like something they would be interested in. I'll ahve to see if we can get one set up.

    Thanks again!

DANCE!! Put on some really fast music and try to dance on the beat. Play different kinds of music and dance to match the music.

Get one of those inflatable exercise balls and a book of exercises to do with it. They are fun for bouncing on, too!

Play this game: Everyone lines up along a line like the edge of a rug. The rug is the "bank" and the floor is the "river". The leader says, "On the bank! In the river! On the bank! In the river! On the bank! On the bank!" and so on, and the others hop back and forth until somebody lands on the wrong side. Then that person is the leader.

That game sounds like fun, Becca! Thanks for visiting my blog and sharing!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
