Return to Me, the first book in The Restoration Chronicles series, is set during the time period that the Jews were exiled in Babylon. It tells the story of Iddo and his oldest grandson Zechariah. Zechariah is just 12 when the book opens, studying for his Bar Mitzvah.
Kind Cyrus has declared that the Jews, who have lived in exile in Babylon for decades, may return to Jerusalem. Iddo is very excited to be able to take his family home to Jerusalem. His sons, however, have grown up in Babylon and don’t want to leave. Iddo, and his wife Dinah, are heartbroken to be leaving their children and grandchildren behind. Young Zechariah, is the only one of the family that is going with them.
The journey home to the Promised Land is very difficult. They finally make it, only to find Jerusalem in rubble, and the people living there, including many Jewish people, do not welcome them. The book tells the story of what they go through building houses, and rebuilding the temple. The book ends with the dedication of the temple.
I love that the author directly quotes Scripture passages when the characters are reading, singing, or reciting the passages. In other places, the author has paraphrased the words of the Biblical characters, such as Zechariah and Haggai.
Return to Me is over 450 pages long. I have not finished reading the book yet. I am loving it, though. Return to Me really brings the stories in the Bible to life. I have already recommend this book to my daughter. She’s going to read it as soon as I am down. Even though I haven’t finished the whole book yet, I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.
