Encountering God Study Bible Review & Giveaway

May 3, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We did an Experiencing God by Henry & Richard Blackaby Bible study at church last year that I really liked. So when I saw that the Blackaby’s had a new Encountering God Study Bible available, I looked forward to using it.

The Blackaby family have spend decades pastoring, planting churches and developing books and Bible studies to help everyone have an encounter with God. The Encountering God Study Bible is the crowning work of the Blackabys. Look how many Blackabys contributed to this Bible!

Encountering God Study Bible Review

Featuring their trusted approach to Bible study, this Study Bible includes:

Notes highlighting how God might choose to encounter you in His Word
Notes explaining ideas, events, people and places in the text
Word studies, character studies, and biographical sketches of figures from church history
Notes to help you navigate current cultural issues

Encountering God Study Bible Review

Encountering God Study Bible Review

First off, the black, leathersoft Bible is a very handsome Bible, with nice stitching, and metallic printing on the spine. One of my favorite things about this study Bible is that it has two different colored, attached ribbon bookmarks. My other Bibles either have one or no bookmarks. The Bible reading plan we are using at church this year has us reading a chapter from the Old Testament, and the New Testament, every day. So I really appreciate the two ribbon bookmarks.

Encountering God Study Bible Review

Inside the Encountering God Study Bible, the font is a good, easily readable size. They call this “Comfort Print”. I found the font to be pleasant to read. The pages are formatted as other Bibles. With two columns of text, with a middle column of verse cross references. As well as notes across the bottom of the pages.

Study Bible Features

This Bible also features “Encounter Notes” throughout. These encounter notes highlight how God has chosen to encounter us in His word. There is not one on every page, but the Encounter Notes have the verse that it applies to in the corner, so it’s easy to refer to the verse it is referencing.

Encountering God Study Bible Review

Bible Character Studies are scattered throughout this Bible. Also included are biological sketches, Historical Encounters, of people who have lived out their faith.

Encountering God Study Bible Review

There is a nice introduction section at the beginning of each chapter of this Bible. This introduction features 4 sections. Introduction, Significance, Structure, and Encountering God Through “name of book”. I found these Encountering God sections to contain information not found in other Bibles that I own. Yes, I own several different Bibles.

Encountering God Study Bible Review

There are many reference sections in the back of this Bible. Including an Index to Special Features, 4 pages long, where you can find all of the special notes I mentioned above.

Encountering God Study Bible Review

You can go here to read the book of Genesis from this Bible.

Encountering God Study Bible

The Encountering God Study Bible comes in a variety of cover options. Hardcover, leather, and leathersoft – which is what I received, as well as a couple of different colors. However, it only comes in one version, NKJV.

I have enjoyed using this awesome study Bible. It can be used on it’s own, clearly, but it is also works nicely alongside any reading plan or bible study that you are using.

Seen, Secure, Free Book Review

April 29, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I find that reading Christian living books and personal growth books really help my walk with God. Seen Secure Free – How a Life Hidden with Christ Strengthens and Transforms You sounded like the perfect next book for me to read.

About the Book

In a world that screams, “Be seen! Be known!” and often measures value by likes, shares and follows, it’s easy to feel invisible, unheard, unloved. But God’s Word offers a powerful and freeing counternarrative: true treasure is actually found in the “hidden” life of Christ.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve confused our level of visibility with our value. We’ve mixed up fame with fruitfulness. We’ve equated exposure with excellence.

But what if we stopped trying so hard to be seen, recognized, and affirmed by the world around us? What if there’s a different way of living altogether?

In “Seen Secure Free,” Allison Allen delves into Colossians 3:3, reminding us of the profound truth that our lives are hidden with Christ in God. Through captivating insights drawn from nature, history, and Scripture, she invites readers to embrace a different way of living—one that transcends the relentless pursuit of recognition and applause from the world.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll discover within the pages of this transformative book:

Let go of the pressure to be recognized and praised by others;

Release the resentment that comes from feeling unseen or misunderstood;

Find contentment in a loving God who knows you deeply;

Find security in a powerful God who establishes your identity, worth, and purpose;

Reset your motivations and goals to align with his kingdom; and

Feel freed to pursue new adventures with Jesus

Seen Secure Free

In Seen Secure Free, Allison Allen combines the history of the Outer Banks, with stories of her time on the beaches there, to help us learn to see, and focus on, what God is doing in our lives.

We learn that times of being hidden, concealment, are a time of preparation. God sees us.

“Waiting time is Christ is never wasted time.” page 71

In the Seen section of the book, the author discusses social media. Are we looking for likes and shares to be seen. Or are we looking to God first.

In Secure, the author points out our roots. Where are our roots? We need to examine, and re-examine, where we have planted our roots. So when He calls us forward to do something, we can go boldly, because we know that our roots are anchored in God.

“The longer I walk with Jesus, the more I believe with all my heart that He makes far more use of my consecrated weakness than He does of my so called strengths.” page 165

In the Free section, we learn that because God sees us, and we are secure with our roots in Him, we are free. We are free because he goes before us in every life situation, the good, the bad, the big, and the small.

“We matter to the One who matters – who sees us, secures, us, and ultimately frees us – that is more than enough.” page 186

Seen Secure Free Book Review

I have loved reading Seen Secure Free. I really love the last paragraph of the book.

“Lean into these life-changing gifts, friend. And keep looking up to the One who sees you as you walk the ocean’s edge all the way home.” page 228

Throughout the book, there are “Concealed Characters” sections. A Concealed Character is a person in the Bible that we don’t know much about. They may be unnamed, as One of Many Others, A Son of Korah, The Bent Woman. Or the Bible may mention them by name, without going into their whole story. The author uses each of these to help us see their story, what the characters may have seen or said, to help us see what the lessons in this book might look like in others lives.

I loved that each chapter of the book ended with a prayer. A prayer to help use learn, and apply to our lives, what was talked about in the chapter.

Seen Secure Free shows us just what the title says. That we are SEEN by God, that we can be SECURE in God, and that God sets us FREE. Free from what holds us down in this world, what the world says about us, so we can be who He wants us to be.

Buy your copy of Seen Secure Free HERE. When you purchase from their site, you will also receive a free devotional based on the book, as well as several printables.

Unsung Hero Movie Review

April 24, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love a good biography. I, also, have loved listening to the music of Rebecca St. James and For King + Country for years. By the way, one of my kids just told me a couple of months ago that they are siblings! So when I heard about the new movie Unsung Hero, I knew I would love it. I just watched it, and I was right. I love it!

Unsung Hero

Synopsis:

When David Smallbone’s successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Australia to the United States in search of a brighter future. With nothing more than their six children, their suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives from the ground up. Based on a remarkable true story, a mum’s faith stands against all odds; and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs.

Unsung Hero Movie Review

I was moved to tears several times over the things that God did for them. I actually lost track of the number of times I was moved to tears. But Unsung Hero is not just a tearjerker. It’s a story of faith, hope, and love of family. And what God can do in our lives.

The family moved to the United States with the promise of a job. When they got here, the job was gone. They started taking care of yards to have money coming in. They also added housecleaning to make ends meet. The whole family pitched in to work together, and to put all the money earned into the family money jar. All while, the father, David, kept looking for work in the music industry.

So many things happened to knock them down. A health scare, hospital bills, no vehicle, depression, among others. The whole time, the family prayed, worked, and stuck together.

On of my favorite parts was the Please and Thank You wall. The family started writing down what they were praying for and put it under the Please heading on the wall. It was so cool to watch their prayers come to fruition and them moving the requests to the Thank You side.

Here is a poster you can download and use for your family!

Interview with Luke Smallbone

Unsung Hero ends with Rebecca getting a record deal. I did not want the movie to end! I wanted more of this beautiful family’s story. Thankfully, at the end of the movie, we see pictures of each of the family members, and what they are doing now. So be sure to stay for the credits when you see this movie in theaters.

I loved this movie! Unsung Hero is an awesome family movie, suitable for all ages. I highly recommend you see this movie!

The Hopeful Movie Review & Giveaway

April 10, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

From the moment I learned about the new movie, The Hopeful, I was looking forward to watching it. This movie did not disappoint. Scroll down for my The Hopeful movie review, and a giveaway!

The Hopeful Movie Review

The Hopeful

Synopsis:

William Miller’s faith is in ruins. After miraculously surviving a fierce battle in the War of 1812, Miller questions why God spared him. His search for wisdom leads to an astonishing prophesy — the world is going to end. The Hopeful unfolds as a story of a man burdened with the knowledge of Christ’s return. Miller’s message resonates with some—even as it is scorned by others.

When a young woman named Ellen Harmon listens to one of his sermons she is transformed. And through her witness the message begins to take flight. The preaching grows beyond prophecy and develops into a more holistic vision for how Christians should live and worship. We see blossoming the seeds of a new global movement of faith —the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Hopeful is the true story of a community whose lives were transformed as they learn what it means to truly wait for Jesus. This sweeping drama, set in 19th century New England, invites audiences of all ages to imagine how
hope can change the world.

Watch the Trailer

The Hopeful Movie Review

The Hopeful is a very well done period piece seen in flashbacks as a father tells his children the story.

We see the excitement of the people believing that the Lord was coming back on that certain day. Then the disbelief and sorrow they experienced when the Lord didn’t return.

There were a lot of people that “fell off the path”, believing that if the Lord didn’t return on that specific day, He is not coming back.

We follow the believers as they regroup to share the message from the Lord, without concentrating on a return date. This includes the people pushing to move church worship to Saturday, the 7th day of the week.

After this regrouping, Ellen Harmon started seeing visions. Some of the community didn’t believe here, including some of her own family. She marries a young man, James White, that was active in sharing about the day the Lord was expected to return. Together, they continue to share the Lord’s message. Through having kids, no money, sickness, and the death of children, they remain faithful.

This all leads to the forming of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Through Ellen’s visions, they establish the tenants of their faith. No alcohol, coffee, or tea. The return to “the diet of Eden”, no meat, only fruits, vegetables, and grains. After her husbands sickness, Ellen called for the establishment of healthcare as a principal concern of the church. They now operate hospitals, and medical clinics around the world. AdventHealth is now the largest not-for-profit Protestant health care provider in the United States.

The father’s story ends with saying “The Bible says that the good news of Jesus and His soon return must go to all the world, and then He will return to take us home. Today is only the beginning.”

The credits at the end of the movie have pictures of the actor, and the real person that they portrayed, along with a sentence or two about them.

Ellen White continued traveling, preaching, and writing until her death at the age of 87, in 1915. The Smithsonian Institution has named Ellen White as one of the 100 most influential Americans of all time.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching The Hopeful. It held my attention the entire time. The Hopeful is a great movie suitable for the whole family. Whether you are an Adventist, or not, I recommend The Hopeful if you are looking for a faith based movie to watch.

Someone Like You Movie Review & Giveaway

April 2, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Someone Like You is the new movie based on the popular novel by #1 NY Times Bestselling author Karen Kingsbury. She is a prolific author that has written over 100 books.

Someone Like You is an achingly beautiful redemptive love story. Shocking news hits after young architect Dawson Gage loses his best friend, London Quinn. Now in his heartbreak, Dawson is compelled to launch an impossible search for London’s secret twin sister, twins separated as embryos. But along the way, Dawson never planned to fall in love.

Someone Like You stars Sarah Fisher, Jake Allyn, Lynn Collins, Robyn Lively, Bart Johnson, and Scott Reeves.

London had no idea that she had a twin sister out there somewhere. Her parents had never found “the right time” to tell her. After her death, London’s parents told Dawson their well kept secret. He missed his friend so much, that it was unfathomable to him that he wouldn’t look for her twin.

There was one catch, though. London’s twin sister Andi did not know she was adopted.

So when Dawson found her, she didn’t believe him. When she told her parents about meeting him, they finally told her the story of her birth.

I can relate to this, as my mother was adopted. She found out she had a half sibling when they were both adults, their mother having already passed. Her sibling had no idea she existed, because their mother never told them. I witnessed how hard it was to receive this shocking news.

Someone Like You Movie Review

I loved Someone Like You. The love of family is my favorite theme of this movie.. The biological parents loving so much that they donated their frozen embryo to another couple. And the love they carried in their hearts for her, believing that they would never see her in person. Then finally getting to meet, and spend time with her. The love of adopted parents for the child they birthed and raised. The child they never meant to hurt by not telling her she was adopted. And the love that Dawson found with London’s twin sister, Andi.

Faith is another favorite of mine in this movie. How God can heal our hurting hearts, and give us hope for the future.

Someone Like You is rated PG, and suitable for the whole family.

Watch the Someone Like You Trailer

Someone Like You is the first film from Karen Kingsbury Productions. It was made independently. No Hollywood support, no studio, no investors. That’s right. Karen Kingsbury, and her family, used their own money to make this movie. If you love great family movies, support Someone Like You by going to see it in theaters, and telling your family and friends about it. So they are able to make more movies for the whole family to see.
