Saturday on the Farm

April 17, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

It was a gorgeous week here. It seems like everything is leafing, budding or blooming. Except the vegetable garden. sigh….Hopefully I will be strong enough to start working out there soon. The kids worked in the garden on Monday and got a section ready to plant. The spots for lettuce, spinach and peas are ready. Now I just have to get them planted.

Our apple trees are blooming.

We have a few spears of asparagus ready to eat. yummo…

Unfortunately, we are being visiting by bag worms. ugh…

D will be going out to kill them. I leave all such things to him.

New Next Week

I will be starting a Saturday on the Farm carnival!

Write a post about your homestead, farm, farmette, raised bed gardens, container gardens or even your one tomato plant in a pot on your deck.

It can be a week in review type post, a picture post, or what is happening on Saturday On Your Farm

It will be fun to visit each others farms or gardens.

Hope to see you next week!

Recycled Garden Marker

April 16, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Last year I was looking for garden markers to make as they are very expensive to buy. I found this idea somewhere, I can’t remember were. They are really easy to make, and look great in the garden.

Recycled Garden Marker

I cut the top and bottom off a soda can. be very careful as the edges are sharp. Once you have the long piece, cut it to the desired size, make sure you leave enough extra around the edges for folding over. Fold over the edges using pliers (that’s what I used anyway), then make a hole in the top for hanging.

To write on it, put the marker on something soft. A magazine works well. I used a ball point pen to write the information on the metal. The ink doesn’t work on the metal, but the pen indents the metal.

I then used a metal clothes hanger, cut to the right length to make a hanger.

Here’s the back of the garden marker. I made this last summer, and it stayed outside all winter. The marker itself weathered well, but the hanger is rusted.

Recycled Garden Marker

This is a easy way to use recycled materials in your garden. The soda cans stand up to the weather very well.

What do you use for garden markers?

Our First Broken Bone

April 15, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Abby fell last week rollerblading on our porch. I think it was Thursday. She came in and told me that she fell and hurt her arm. She wasn’t crying, and there were no marks on her arm.

So I said what every other Mother since the beginning of time has said, “Your fine, go back and play.” So she did.

She only complained a couple of times about it hurting over the weekend. It hurt the worst after she hoed in the garden on Monday. I had her sit with an ice pack on her arm, but she said it didn’t help. It was later in the afternoon, so I called for a doctors appointment the next day. Her favorite doctor wasn’t in on Tuesday, so she opted to wait until Wednesday for an appointment.

Tuesday her arm felt better. Wednesday morning, it was only bothering her when she used it.

I almost didn’t take her to the doctor.

The doctor (well, PA) examined her arm, moved it around pressed all over. Which didn’t even hurt, Abby said. She thought Abby probably pulled a tendon. She went ahead and xrayed it.

Surprise, Surprise, Abby has a break on her elbow.

When I found out, I apologized to Abby for not taking her to the doctor sooner. The PA told me not to feel guilty, she said she knew I was. She said it’s ok, I almost didn’t xray it.

She wrapped it, put on a sling, and told Abby not to use her arm, hand or even her fingers, until she sees the doctor tomorrow. Which is today. She can’t even hold a pencil until he decides if he wants to splint it, cast it, or send Abby to see an orthopedist.

Yeah, Abby wasn’t too broken up about the whole not holding a pencil and not doing schoolwork thing. She might have even been happy.

So we’ll find out this morning what they are going to do. She’s not in any pain. It only hurts when she uses it. And she’s not using it.

See? She even figured out how to play Wii left handed.

UPDATE…..Abby saw the doctor this morning, and he said it’s not broken. He said what the PA thought was a break, was actually the growth plate.

Abby has to wear the sling for 3 or 4 more days and be careful with her arm. Then she’s good to go. She’s already planning what she’s going to do first – bike riding, rollerblading…again.

I’m thankful it’s not broken. Especially since she has her Association Bible Drill Competition on Sunday.

A Kids Cup Corral

April 15, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

With four kids till at home, we go through a lot of cups on a daily basis. I try to have the kids use the same water cup all day.

Some of them are apparently cup challenged, as they can never remember where they left their cup.

I came up with the idea to use my Tupperware lazy susan as a cup corral.

It’s right next to the fridge and water dispenser, so it’s handy for them. It keeps the keeps from being spread all over the kitchen. And the rest of the house.

A Nifty Recipe Holder

April 14, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Most recipe holders are for small recipe cards. When you print your recipes off the internet, how do you hold them up of the counter?

I discovered I could use the holder that I keep by the computer to hold papers.

Holding the recipe up makes it much easier to read. And it keeps the recipe clean.

What’s For Dinner?

April 12, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Well, I’m still not feeling much like cooking. I think I’m going to stop worrying about it, and keep the meals simple. The family likes simple, so I’m just going to go with it.

Saturday – Make your own night. I enjoyed make your own night…except for the mess…

Sunday – Sandwiches

Monday – Baked Chicken, Baked potatoes, salad

Tuesday – Lasagna, salad, garlic bread

Wednesday – Leftovers, salad

Thursday – Chicken Alfredo Pasta, broccoli

Friday – Hamburgers with all the fixings

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
