Saving Money on Cheese

March 5, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We love cheddar cheese…. a lot! We like to eat it plain, on top of casseroles, in homemade macaroni and cheese.

Cheddar Cheese can be expensive. So one way I keep the amount we use low is to use extra sharp cheddar.

I can use less cheese in the macaroni and cheese, and on top of casseroles and still get great cheese flavor.

This would work with any other cheeses, also. Just use a stronger flavored cheese instead of a milder one, and you can use less. And save money!

Why You Should Never Wash Pillows

March 5, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

See this pillow?

Looks like a cute, innocent little girls pillow, doesn’t it?
Yeah, well, see the white spot in the upper left. It wasn’t there when I put the pillow in the washing machine. Some how, it ripped in the washer.

And that is what my poor front loading washing machine looked like.

The load of laundry was covered in little white balls. I didn’t know how I was ever going to get them off the laundry. Thankfully, they shook right off.

See what the floor and socks looked like?

Your laughing, aren’t you? That’s ok, I laughed, too!

I vacuumed out the washer. Even so the next two loads still had little white balls on them.

Remind me to never put cute, innocent looking pillows in the washer, okay?

Works For Me Wednesday – Netti Pot

March 4, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love my netti pot! A netti pot is for washing out your sinus’s. It is incredibly helpful when you have a cold. It is invaluable when you have a sinus infection and allergies. I have been having trouble with allergies this winter, a first for me. And I have been having recurring sinus infections. oh, what fun….NOT

Here’s a link that explains how to use a neti pot. And, of course, you tube has a video

Here’s the netti pot I have, at cvs.com. I bought mine in store at Walmart, but Walmart.com isn’t showing any.

Walgreens.com has a few to choose from, including the one I have.

Frittatas

March 3, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I made a frittata for supper last night. A frittata is basically an egg dish, with whatever meat, vegetables and cheeses you want to add. Everyone likes when I make a frittata. The are very frugal, too, because you can use whatever meat and vegetables you have left over to put in it.

I don’t usually follow a recipe. Last night, I used frozen stir fry vegetables. I usually chop up onions to cook at the same time. When the vegetables are done to your likeness, add any cooked meat that you want. For my large cast iron skillet, I use 12-15 eggs. Beat the eggs, adding a 1/2 or so of water. You could add milk instead of the water, if you like. Pour the egg mixture over the veggies. Now is when you would add any cheese that you want in it. But don’t stir! Otherwise, you’ll get scrambled eggs. When the eggs start to set, you use a spatula to gently lift the edges, tilting the pan to let the raw eggs sun under the cooked part. You keep doing this around the edges of the pan, until it is all set. At this point, I like to put sliced tomatoes on top, as well as a sprinkling of cheddar cheese. Then you put it under the broiler for a couple of minutes, until the center is cooked and it’s nicely browned on top.

In case you want a more complete recipe, All Recipes has recipes for quite a few different frittatas.

I like to serve a frittata with bread and a salad. Here’s what our frittata looked like last night.

Book Reviews – Spring Value Fiction Blog Tour

February 27, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love reading. I would spend all day reading if I could! I don’t have that kind of time anymore. I read a little bit through out the day, though. Since I’m a fast reader, I can still get through books quickly. It still would be nice to have a whole day just to read!

Biographies are my all time favorite books to read. A very close second is Christian Historical Fiction. Which is why I was so happy when WaterBrook Multnomah sent me 2 books to review as part of their Spring Value Fiction Blog Tour.

My favorite way to read a series of books is to borrow the whole set from the library and read them one after the other!

Deep Harbor by Lisa Tawn Bergren

The Northern Lights Series
Book Two

I hadn’t read Book One in this series, but the story was easy to pick up. In this book, the main characters are from Norway. As they are building their lives in America, they travel across the country, finally settling in Alaska at the end of the book. The book ended on a happy note. It was a good ending even if there were no other books in the series coming. But I also found myself wondering what happened to the characters after settling in Alaska.

This was a good book, and I will be looking for the rest of the books in the series. This was the first time that I have read a book by Lisa Tawn Bergren, and I will be looking for other books by her.

The second book they sent me to review is:

Faithful Heart by Al Lacy

Angel of Mercy Series: Book Two

I have read books by Al Lacy before. I have also read a couple of books with the main characters of this book. The books are in another series called the Stranger series.

This book has a helpful Prologue, so if you haven’t read any books in that series, or Book One of this series, it catches you up to speed.

This book is very action packed. I did find parts of this book a tad violet. The violence was part of a story line, not just violence thrown in for the sake of having violence. One of the characters is a Civil War veteran, who is suffering from shell shock.

I did like this book, in spite of the violence, and will be looking for Book One in this series, as well as additional books in the series.

I recommend both of these books. I really liked both of them!

*These books were provided for review by the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group. I received no other compensation for reviewing these books.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
