Book Description:

Let God stir your heart for some who are truly in need—thousands of children living in slum conditions in Asia. In this book, real children share their real stories of need and how our loving God intervened to redeem them with His love.

Generation to Generation Book Review

September 18, 2020 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This post contains an affiliate link

I recently received a copy of Generation to Generation to read. Generation to Generation is the new book from the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, written by the founders daughter, Yael Eckstein.

The sub title Passing on a Legacy of Faith to Our Children aptly describes this book.

Chapters include Shabbat, Passover, Shavuot, Tisha B’Av, the High Holy Day, Sukkot, Purim, and tzedakah. Within those chapters, discussions include teaching our children, priorities, gratitude, hope, forgiveness, faith, courage, generosity, and more.

Generation to Generation Book Review

The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews was founded in 1983 by Orthodox Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, whose vision for building bridges of understanding and cooperation between Christians and Jews has been translated into the largest Christian-supported humanitarian agency helping Jews in Israel and around the world. You can learn more about the organization and Rabbi Eckstein here.

For more than 2,000 years, the Jewish people have preserved and maintained their faith from generation to generation, despite being exiled from their land and suffering persecutions, pogroms, and even the Holocaust, where six million Jewish women, men, and children were killed at the hands of the Nazis. In her book, Generation to Generation, Fellowship President and CEO Yael Eckstein unlocks the keys to how the Jewish people have successfully passed on the legacy of faith through the family,  and offers insights into how Christians can incorporate these principles within their own families to pass on a strong and living faith.

Yael Eckstein Generation to Generation Book Review

The author, Yael Eckstein, is President and CEO of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, the largest provider of humanitarian aid in Israel.  You can find more info about her on the book site, www.generationbook.org

Generation to Generation Book Review

You can tell how good a book is by how many pages you mark! This was not just for a picture. These are actual markers I placed while I read this book.

Generation to Generation Book Review

I love that at the end of every chapter there are 3 pages to help you see where what was discussed in that chapter is mentioned in the New Testament, Family Talk – family discussion questions, and Bible verses to memorize.

In this example you find out how Tisha B’av is mentioned. These pages are very informative. You just may see a connection that you haven’t seen before.

Generation to Generation Book Review

Depending on the ages of your children, you may be able to read these Family Talk questions just as they are. For younger kids, you can easily simplify the questions to their level.

At the bottom of this page is a section just for parents. These sections will encourage and inspire you to learn and live these principals with your children every day.

Generation to Generation Book Review

The page of Bible memory verses includes selections from both the Old and the New Testaments. The verses vary in length. You choose which one, or more, will work for you family.

Generation to Generation Book Review

I highly recommend this book if you have children. I wish I had had this book when mine were younger! Yes, my kids are now grown. I still loved this book!

I highly recommend this book if you have ever delved into your Jewish roots, or would like to. You don’t have to have young kids to read this book! She does talk about kids a lot, but the book isn’t written for kids, it’s written for adults.

I highly recommend this book if you desire to learn how to share your faith with your children on a daily basis. The author shares many, many examples of how to live out the principles in this book. Ways to weave your faith into everything you do every day with your family.

Maybe you don’t have kids. Or like me, your kids are grown. Give this book to those in your life that do have kids. Grandparents, share this book with your kids, so they can share it with theirs.

Generation to Generation is available on Amazon.

The Logic of God by Ravi Zacharias – Book Review

June 12, 2019 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This post contains an affiliate link.

I recently received a copy of the book The Logic of God to read. I was looking forward to reading this new book. And I wasn’t disappointed.

The Logic of God

The Logic of God Book Description

Jesus Christ alone answers our deepest questions.

We all have doubts that challenge our faith. We wonder whether the Bible still matters, or whether God is truly as loving and personal as we hope. In his first ever devotional, The Logic of God, apologist Ravi Zacharias offers 52 readings that explain how and why Christianity, the Bible, and God are still relevant, vital, and life-changing for us today. To all our dilemmas Ravi says, “I am convinced that Jesus Christ alone uniquely answers the deepest questions of our hearts and minds.”

With a remarkable grasp of biblical facts and a deep understanding of the questions that trouble our hearts, Ravi tackles the most difficult topics with ease and understanding. But The Logic of God is more than intellectual; it is also personal, offering thoughtful wisdom on:

  • when Jesus draws especially near you.
  • the deep ray of hope found in God’s Word.
  • how God transforms disappointments.
  • why prayer matters.
  • how genuine peace is possible.
  • making sense of suffering.

Ravi makes profound biblical truth easy to understand. And if your life is busy, this book is designed for you! It addresses 52 topics that you can read over the course of one year or slowly digest at your own pace. Each entry includes a Scripture, questions for reflection, and some practical application steps.

When you’re struggling with questions and doubts, confused, curious, or just want a clearer way to express your faith The Logic of God has answers from that satisfy the heart and the mind.

The Logic of God

The Logic of God Book Review

The Logic of God is a devotional book with 52 entries. Each day’s reading follows the same pattern.

A scripture verse

2-4 pages of reading

2 Reflection Questions

2 Personal Application questions &/or things to do

This is not a fluff devotional. The readings are full of information, references, stories, and more. The questions are challenging to the reader, as in challenging you to think about the lesson and reach deep to answer it. But not so hard that you can’t answer them. There are no right or wrong answers!

You can choose how you want to read this book. You read one a day, and finish in under 2 months, one a day Monday-Friday and finish in about 2 1/2 months, or read one a week for a year.

I am really liking this devotional. I have found many of the readings to be much more than what the typical devotion is like in make books. Many of these are more like a teaching session. They are easy to read, but challenging at the same time. I like that there is a note section in the back that tells you where the references came from. As well as several pages of lined pages for you to write your own notes. There is a built in ribbon bookmark so you can easily find your place.

If you are looking for a devotional to challenge you to find out what you believe and why, The Logic of God is the devotional for you.

Grit & Grace Devotions for Warrior Moms Book Review & Giveaway

February 22, 2019 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This post contains affiliate links

As a mom of 6, I know first hand how hard it is to fit in Bible reading and devotion time. It’s not because we don’t want to. It’s because we have these little people all clamoring for our attention. Often several at the same time. Add in work, and all the other responsibilities moms have, and it sure is hard to fit anything in!

That’s why I’m really liking Grit & Grace Devotions for Warrior Moms. Grit & Grace is a 90 day devotional for busy moms. Daily devotions take less than 5 minutes to read. Each devotion includes Bible verses, a prayer, along with a true story of motherhood with the spiritual truths the authors learned by going through the experience with their kids. This devotional is fully self contained, you don’t need to gather your Bible, notebook, pen, etc.

Grit & Grace Devotions for Warrior Moms Book Review & Giveaway

Grit & Grace Devotions for Warrior Moms is written for moms of young children. Babies, toddlers, and early elementary. I had all of those at the same time, along with a couple of teenagers, too. lol My oldest was 14 when my youngest was born. From reading these devotionals, I think they are appropriate for moms with kids of all ages. And Grandma’s too! Let’s not leave out the grandmas! I am one now. lol This devotional will encourage you while you spend quality time with your grandchildren. If you are one of the many, many grandmothers now raising your grandchildren, you will benefit greatly from this devotional book.

The authors are both busy moms that use their own real life stories, along with humor to help encourage moms. As you read the Bible verses and prayer that go along with each day’s message, you’ll discover more fully who you are in Christ and how to raise your children to reflect His love to the world.

I have enjoyed reading the devotionals in Grit & Grace, now I’m going to pass my copy on to my daughter. My granddaughter is 6 months old now, and I know these devotions will really help and encourage my daughter as she walks through this journey of motherhood.

The Glass Castle – A Schoolhouse Review Crew Book Review

June 10, 2016 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I recently received the book The Glass Castle by Trisha White Priebe and Jerry B. Jenkins from Shiloh Run Press for my 15 year old son to read and review. The Glass Castle is an adventure story written for ages 10-15. Girls and boys will enjoy reading this book. This age range is perfect for this book. I think The Glass Castle would make a great family read a loud, too.

The Glass Castle {Shiloh Run Press Review}

The Glass Castle is a hardcover book 251 pages long. It has 41 chapters with most ranging from 2 to 10 pages long. It’s an easy read. My son, an avid reader, finished it in one day. You can read a 35 page sample of The Glass Castle on the website. The book is billed as having the setting of The Chronicles of Naria meets the action from Alice in Wonderland.

The Glass Castle by Trisha White and Jerry Jenkins

As soon as you start reading The Glass Castle you are thrown into the adventure. The first chapter opens with Avery, the main character, and her younger brother Henry being chased through the woods. This day happens to be Avery’s 13th birthday. She doesn’t make it home for her birthday dinner………. Avery and her brother were kidnapped!

In The Glass Castle, the king is worried about who will take over his throne when he dies. His new wife wants to produce an heir. The king’s first wife had a son, but no one, not even the king, knows where he is. His solution? Get rid of all the orphans.

Someone, though, has taken all the orphans and has hidden them from the king so he can’t kill them. Right under his nose in his castle. Where they are living and doing the work of the castle, while being held as prisoners.

Avery was surprised that new, pretty clothes were left for her to wear, just like all the other kids there wore. She had never seen so many well-dressed kids in one place before. They had plenty of food at every meal, fruit, meats, and milk to drink. It looked like a big feast to Avery. She was used to eating whatever they grew or caught at her house.

Avery was separated from her brother, as all the other 13 year old kids were separated from their siblings. Their siblings were being held somewhere else. If the 13 year olds escaped, they would never see their siblings again. The kids were marked with a black star, so if they escaped they would be returned. Or sent to the Forbidden City.

Here’s what Zach had to say about The Glass Castle:  The kids are hiding from the adults, someone was hunting them. It’s set in a castle most of the time & in a forest. One of the kids is the heir. No one knows who it is, not even the kid. I liked the part where one kid left the others and didn’t come back. The book didn’t resolve the story, it left you wondering. I recommend this book.

The Glass Castle ends with Avery reading her mother’s travel journal. She is surprised to find a key hidden in the back of it. You can imagine how shocked Avery is to discover that the key she found actually fits the door to the tunnels below the castle. She doesn’t open the doors, though. Which leaves the reader anticipating book two of the series!

Can’t Leave Alone Bars Recipe & Gather Around the Amish Table Cookbook Review

September 17, 2015 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I have a great cookie bar recipe to share. Doing a cookbook review is mighty tasty work! It’s very sweet, so you only need a small piece. I think this will be great to take to potluck dinners. It will be easy to keep all the ingredients in the pantry to make these bars any time. Well, except for the eggs. Keep those in the fridge. lol

I found this recipe in the Gather around the Amish Table cookbook. Read below for more information about this new cookbook.

Can't Leave Alone Bars Recipe

Can’t Leave Alone Bars

1 (16 ounce ) white cake mix

2 eggs

1/3 cup oil

1/4 cup butter

1 cup chocolate chips

1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

Mix together cake mix, eggs, and oil. Reserve 3/4 cup crumbs. Put remaining crumbs into 9 x 13 inch pan. Melt butter, chocolate chips, and sweetened condensed milk together until just combined. Pour on top of crumb crust in pan. Top with remaining crumb mixture by spoonfuls. Bake at 300* for 20-30 minutes.

My notes: My mixture wasn’t a crumb mixture. It was more the texture of cookie dough. The sweetened condensed milk and chocolate chips make a kind of fudge sitting on top of the cookie. Yum!  This recipe lends itself well to some creativity. Use different flavored cake mixes and different flavored chocolate chips, or peanut butter chips, etc.

Keep reading to get a great lasagna recipe and to see how you can win a copy of Gather around the Amish Table!

I have loved reading this cookbook! It compiles favorite family recipes from Amish and Mennonite kitchens. the recipe contributors also share stories about their recipes and their families.

You will find some recipes to use whether you cook everything from scratch or use some prepackaged foods like the cake mix in the recipe above. I have found quite a few recipes that I want to try.

Incorporate Amish cooking traditions this fall in your kitchen with Lucy Leid’s Gather Around the Amish Table. Straight from Amish kitchens to yours, this cookbook offers favorite family recipes and charming stories from Amish and Mennonite cooks. Gather your family around the table to sample the nourishing fare and trademark charm of the plain people. In the words of one cookbook contributor: “Bake someone happy!”

Israel’s Mission

September 16, 2015 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We all have a God given mission. What is your mission?

I recently received Israel’s Mission DVD and the book Israel’s Mission Discovery Guide to review.

Join renowned teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan as he guides you through the lands of the Bible. In each lesson, Vander Laan illuminates the historical, geographical, and cultural context of the sacred Scriptures. Filmed on location in the Middle East and elsewhere, the That the World May Know ® film series will transform your understanding of God and challenge you to be a true follower of Jesus.

Israel's Mission

The Israel’s Mission DVD features 5 video lessons that are each just over 30 minutes long. These are designed to watch as part of a group, or individually. The Israel’s Mission Discovery Guide has a lesson that corresponds to each video lesson to be completed after watching the video. There are then 5 daily readings with questions to do before you watch the next video. I liked Ray Vander Laan’s teaching styled in the video lessons.

One of my favorite lessons was when he was explaining the tassels on the prayer shawl in Israel at Sinai: The First Great Commission, video lesson number two. I have studied some about the prayer shawl in the past, so I like how he taught about the tassels and the gentile.

Filmed on location at these biblically significant sites in Israel and Jordan:

-Back to the Father’s House – Negev Desert
-Show Them the Way – Timnah
-Prodigal Sons and Daughters – Qatzrin
-Return from the Far Off Country – Jerash
-Welcome Home – Qatzrin
Israel’s Mission is a Bible study that will help you see and understand what God says in the Bible about being a Priest. You will also be able to see how to translate that to the world we live in today.

God gave the assignment to His people thousands of years ago: to bring “lost sheep” back into the love and safety of His kingdom. He said to become a “Kingdom of Priests,” and put God on display to show the world what He is like. It’s still our task today. In this thirteenth volume of the That the World May Know ® film series, you’ll glimpse the urgency and rewards of welcoming the strangers and prodigals the Lord longs to embrace. Discover the mission that can give your life – and the lives of those around you – greater meaning than you ever imagined.
