You Can Do a Graphic Novel – Review & Giveaway

June 22, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

**This giveaway is now over.  Click here to see the winner!

Graphic novels, a variation of comic books, are slowly but surely gaining popularity with tweens and teens. Thousands who just went to see Thor are eagerly waiting for the opening night of Captain America, Green Lantern and The Avengers. The movies that are expected to generate millions in the box office will also refresh curiosity in graphic novels.
Creating a graphic novel combines writing and illustrating with great creativity. It can be educational, exciting and fun. For young graphic novel enthusiasts the process of creating a graphic novel can be a great adventure that exercises their inner artists and makes a great project for long summer days.
Barbara Slate, graphic novelist and author of You Can Do a Graphic Novel guides readers through the same process she learned in her early days working for Marvel and DC Comics-a process she has simplified for the classes she teaches and for the syndicated column she writes.

The book teaches readers how to:

· Be creative in a way that works for you.
· Find your own artistic style!
· Create characters that get people’s attention … and hold it!
· Develop a great plotline and write believable dialogue.
· Lay out pages to keep the story moving forward.
· Keep those creative juices flowing when you get stuck.

About the Author:
Barbara Slate has done it all. Her first character, Ms. Liz, appeared on millions of greeting cards, in a regular comic strip for Cosmopolitan magazine, as a spokesperson for Dupont’s Lycra and as the star in a series of animated segments on NBC’s Today Show. Her big break in comics came when she created Angel Love for DC Comics. From there, she created, wrote and drew Yuppies from Hell, and Sweet XVI for Marvel and put her own spin on the Disney classics Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Archie’s Betty and Veronica, and Mattel’s Barbie. Barbara’s art has been exhibited in many galleries and reviewed by The New York Times. She is profiled in the seminal work A Century of Women Cartoonists. Stan Lee, Chairman, POW! Entertainment and Chairman Emeritus, Marvel Entertainment, calls Barbara “titanically talented.” She is currently busy being a mom, doing a graphic novel titled, I Got Married and Other Mistakes, and teaching. Her website is barbaraslate.com.

MY REVIEW:

I really loved You Can Do a Graphic Novel. This book is great for kids and adults alike. It’s bright, colorful and full of drawings. With chapters such as Your Story, The Creative Process, Creating Characters, Writing, Layout, and more, this book as everything you need to get started writing a graphic novel. There is even a glossary in the back to help you understand the terms used in the book.

You Can Do a Graphic Novel would make a great, fun way to get your kids writing. And drawing. This would make a great unit for the homeschooler for the middle school and high school. It is possible for younger ages to this book also. As long as your child can read, write, and draw, they will learn a lot from this book, regardless of grade level.

This would also make a great summer project. Keep the kids engaged with their reading and writing while having fun. My 12 year daughter wants to use the book. I think this would make a great family project also. Have the writer in the family write the story. The artist draw the pictures. Even the younger kids could help by giving ideas for the story, and what the characters should look like. How awesome would it be to give books for Christmas (or other holiday) presents that your family has made together?

Sounds great, right? How would you like to win your own book?

Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD – Review & Giveaway

April 4, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This giveaway is over. See the Magdalena DVD Winner!

resized magdalena usa final

Taking the original Jesus Film and adding new footage for women by women, the Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD portrays the story of Christ from the eyes of Mary Magdalene.

From the Campus Crusade for Christ, Magdalena: Through Her Eyes is the story of Jesus from a woman’s perspective. As she followed Jesus, Mary Magdalene witnessed changed lives, miracles and His tenderness toward women. Her own life was radically transformed when Jesus healed her and gave her a new purpose for living.

MY REVIEW:

I don’t remember seeing the original version of Magdalena before. When we were watching it, my husband said he had seen it before.

Even if you’ve seen the original before, you will still want to get Magdalena: Through Her Eyes. There is a short video for the today’s women entitled Free. Also included are a couple behind the scenes videos. As well as a few different promos to show to your church or group.

You’ll want to visit The Magdalena Today Website, where you can find out more about hosting A Movie Night With a Purpose, a great way to motivate women look at their own journeys, and in turn share the film’s message with others. You can download the resources for the movie night on the website, they are free, and editable downloads. You can insert your church’s information before printing. There is much, much more available on the website you’ll want to see and use.

There is an 8 week Bible study, called  Reflections of Hope. I was sent a copy of this, and it looks awesome. You watch a portion of the movie each week, along with a lesson. I haven’t started this yet, I did do a quick read of the booklet, though. I’m looking forward to the Bible study. I would love to do it with a group at my church.

We watch a lot of Bible based movies as a family, and we really liked Magdalena: Through Her Eyes. This is a great movie to sit down together as a family and learn more about God’s love for us all, and it especially shows God’s love for women.

I highly recommend Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD and the Reflections of Hope Bible study.

Have you seen this movie before? Would you like to see it?

Thanks to Propeller, I get to give away one of the Magdalena Through Her Eyes packets that I received to one of you!

The package includes:
Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD
Reflections of Hope Bible Study
“Women’s Ministry Leader” event letter
Special event marketing materials

My Review:

My oldest is 25, and my youngest is 10. I have spent a lot of time watching Christian movies with them. With new movies coming out all the time, we have watched a lot of movies over the years.

The Crossmaker is completely different from any Christian kids movie we’ve ever seen.

The Easter story is told by a Grandfather to his grandchildren. As he tells the story, they go back and forth between the kids and drawings of the Easter story while the grandfather is narrating. These are not just ordinary drawings, these are awesome full color drawings.

What a wonderful re-telling of the Easter story. We loved The Crossmaker!

Included on the DVD are 3 art lessons. Creative lettering using colored pencils, a drawing of the tomb with an angel using pastels, and 3 crosses on a hill using water colors, pen & ink, a& fluorescent crayons.

All 3 art lessons began with the instructor going over all the supplies needed and giving careful instructions.
“Never wipe your pastels with your arm or your sleeve.”

The Crossmakers Bonus Features are incredible! One is called Artful Music. Where she draws a large picture of Jesus carrying the cross while music plays. She draws to the music. Definitely watch this. It’s worth it.

Another one of the bonus features is The Plan of Salvation – video of drawings with voice overs. This is excellent.

Not only is The Crossmaker an entertaining movie and great art lessons, but it’s an evangelism tool as well.

The Crossmaker is an incredible DVD and will make an  awesome Easter present.

Thanks to Propeller, I get to give a copy of The Crossmaker to one of you!

MOST – A Movie Review & Giveaway

March 1, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*Winner has been selected! Visit MOST DVD Winner!

Most the Movie

THE MOST:  The Deluxe Edition DVD
33-minute short film directed by Bobby Garabedian

MOST, the Czech word for “The Bridge,” is a fitting title for this 21st-century parable
about a loving father, his young son, and the fateful day when they attempt to head off
an impending rail disaster. Hundreds of passengers aboard an oncoming steam train are
completely unaware of the danger that looms as they head toward an open drawbridge.
As a desperate young woman witnesses an act of mercy beyond imagination, her life is
changed forever—as are the lives of all who see this film. Both heart wrenching and
glorious, MOST vividly portrays the greatest offering of love, sacrifice, hope, and
forgiveness known to man

The MOST is available on DVD starting March 1 at Christian stores and online.

You can visit MOST the movie on Facebook

Here’s the MOST trailer:

MY REVIEW:

We watched MOST tonight as a family. The teenagers and grown-ups really liked it. The 10 and 12 year old said it was ok. I think the problem they had was the sub-titles. It’s hard for kids to get the hang of reading the sub-titles while watching the movie.

MOST is based on a sermon illustration that pastors have used for years. I had never heard it, but my husband remembers hearing it.

There is one quote on the DVD case that says “John 3:16 in 33 minutes!”

Even though MOST is only 33 minutes long, this movie really captures how much the father really loves his son. And how many needy people were on the train. MOST also captures how much anguish the father felt when he had to sacrifice his son. I was heart broken for the father. The actor did an excellent job showing the anguish on his face.

The movie ends on a high note, showing how others lives were changed by this fathers sacrifice.

I also get to give a copy of MOST to one of you!

The Life Ready Woman – A Book Review & Giveaway

February 24, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

the life ready woman.jpg

About The Life Ready Woman:
Are you a ‘Doing it all’ or ‘Do what matters’ woman?
Whether a stay at home; or working mom, an airplane-hopping executive, an empty-nester caring for multiple generations or a single juggling high demands of career and personal life, today’s fast-paced modern world leaves women gasping for balance. We as modern Christian women want to look to the Bible for guidance on how to manage our lives — but because the world of women looks so different today than it did when the Bible was written, it is hard to find chapter and verse that seems to apply to our situation today.
Thankfully, God has given us exactly that timeless, unchanging guidance for how to find peace, clarity, and God’s best for our lives once we know where to look! The Life Ready Woman: Thriving in a Do-It-All World, reveals a profound biblical roadmap for how each of us can find the abundant life we are longing for, rather than the stressful, torn, how-do-I-balance-it-all life we often feel like we are trying to keep up with today. Actually being a LifeReady Woman means that you are clear about your life, bold in your faith, and able to find God’s best for you, and the end result will be that you not only survive but thrive in our do-it-all world.
God has given every wonderfully unique woman different skills and abilities, different desires, and different temperaments — and every woman around the planet and through the ages is certainly living in different circumstances. But no matter what a woman’s life looks like, the Bible says that God has an individual mission and plan that He’s carefully designed for each of us. And He wants us to find it. Starting January 2011, The Life Ready Woman and the Life Ready Woman Video Series will help every wonderfully unique woman to thrive as she identifies and courageously pursues God’s unique design and callings for her. LifeReady Woman puts you on a roadmap to make decisions that will lead to relief, delight, and fulfillment instead of regret.

MY REVIEW:

Have you ever felt over-whelmed with everything that you have to get done in a day? I know I do sometimes. If you have, The Life Ready Woman is the book for you.

The Life Ready Woman  will help you sort out the important things in your life. Who did God design you to be? What has He called you to do?

As Christian women, we don’t have to do it all! We only have to do what God has called us to do. For most of use, God has called us to be wives and mothers. There is a chapter on The Biblical Definition of of Womanhood, Marriage and Family. It is a much different definition than the world gives.

The Life Ready Woman will help you get over the do-it all syndrome and help you become a do what matters woman.

I also get to give a copy of The Life Ready Woman to one of you!

The Wylds – Review & Giveaway

February 14, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The winner has been selected, Congratulations Stephanie!

SMALL IS THE GATE AND NARROW THE ROAD THAT LEADS TO LIFE, AND ONLY A FEW FIND IT.

The Wylds is an action-packed, adventure film inspired by the hugely popular classic, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. Filled with outrageous characters and exciting special effects, this thought-provoking allegory is a movie the whole family will enjoy.

Chris, a runaway child, lives with a group of misfits in a junkyard, stealing to survive. When a traveling preacher tells him that his father is alive and wants him to come home, Chris must leave his family of thieves and venture into the wilderness in search of his father and a better life.

Join Chris on an action-packed adventure as he outwits bandits, escapes swamp monsters, battles evil robots, and learns valuable lessons about choosing the right path in life.
A contemporary allegory inspired by John Bunyan’s “The Pilgrim’s Progress.”
The Wylds is available at Christian bookstores, online at www.thewylds.com, and for rent at iTunes.

You can also watch The Wylds Featurette.

My Review:

I watched this movie with my family, that includes my husband and our 4 children still at home, ages 10, 12, 15, 16.

We all loved The Wylds. This is a very exciting, action packed movie. I have to admit, I screamed at one point. And jumped at a couple of others. lol No screaming from the kids, just me. lol They did jump at one point, too, though. I covered my eyes during one scene, too. The kids were fine. It was just me. lol

We are one of those families that talks during the movie., as situations arise. This movie has quite a few conversation starters for families.

My 16 year old  son, the video nut, says, “All the special effects were cool. The story was good, too.”

My 15 year old daughter said, “It is wesome!”

The 12 year old girl said, “I liked it, and my favorite part was when Chris almost got run over by a giant.”

The 10 year old boy said, “It was good.”

Make sure you watch the bloopers, too They are really funny.

I also get to give a copy of The Wylds to one of you!
