Homeschooling with the Olympics

The Olympic games are great fun to watch. They can also be a great learning experience for the kids and the whole family. We always do an Olympics unit study. We learn about the food and customs of the host country. Sometimes we have learn the rules for new sports. How much time you spend on this will depend on your family and the age of your kids.

Homeschooling With the Olympics

We always spend time learning about the host country, which is England this year (the year this was originally written!). A study of  England will naturally lead to the independence of the United States. You can cover both World History and United States History at a level appropriate for your kids.

As interesting things come up during the Olympics, we learn about other countries. I like to keep a globe in the room with us while we are watching the Opening Ceremonies. That makes it easy for the whole family to see where the countries are located. Don’t have a globe? Use the computer to look the countries up. You’ll actually get more information about the countries that way.

We’re also making lapbooks this year. Yes, even the teenagers! The one we’re using (linked below) is for high school, too.

Another fun learning activity is for each child to pick a country to root for. They can learn about that country and share with the rest of the family. Have the kids keep track of the medals won by their countries by making a chart.

Homeschooling with the Olympics – Decorating

We also love to decorate for the Olympics. Pull out any flags that you have and the room will feel festive right away. Paper chains are fun to make and hang across doorways or windows. Use red, white, and blue or the colors of the Olympic rings. There are several links below that have coloring pages that can be hung as decorations. One year, I had the kids draw different world flags on index cards and hung them up. The kids loved it when they recognized a flag they had drawn while watching the Olympics.

Here’s my favorite Olympic decoration that we have.

Olympics flag decoration

It’s a pennant made in Vacation Bible School by one of my two oldest kids. This was made in 1992, and we’ve used it every Olympics since then. It would be very easy to recreate. Red felt, white felt on the left hand side had a dowel glued to it. The rings are also made out of felt. The words are silver fabric paint.

Check the Linda’s Lunacy Olympics Board on Pinterest for more decorating ideas.

Homeschooling with the Olympics – Food

As part of our Olympics study, we always try a few foods from the host country. China and Italy have been some of our favorites. Two dishes that are popular in England are fish and chips, and bangers and mash.

Fish and chips are breaded, fried fish and french fries. Use your favorite fish and make some fries. Kids will only eat fish sticks? That’s ok. You can still serve them with french fries (from the freezer section, too, if you want).

Bangers and mash are sausages and mashed potatoes. Another easy meal. Serve your favorite sausage with your favorite mashed potatoes. Make sure to tell the kids they’re bangers and mash, though. An interesting tidbit, during the war, the sausages were made with less meat and with added water. So when the sausages were cooking, the water would explode and they would “bang”, and that’s when they started calling them bangers. (That’s from a video I watched online on how to make bangers and mash.)

There are a lot of ideas for Olympics food on Pinterest, I have several pinned.

Amanda Bennett has a great unit study titled Olympics: History, Geography, & Sports.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 14, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We are still on summer break. We did, however start out unit study of the United Kingdom. We also started an Olympics lapbook. I love using the Olympics for homeschooling. I have ever since we started homeschooling in 1991. So that means out first Olympics was 1992. We study countries, geography, sports science and all the different sports.  The last winter Olympics, we discovered that we really liked watching curling. So we never know what’s going to hold our attention.

I’ll link to what we using for our studies in my upcoming Homeschooling with the Olympics post.

The highlight of the week for Hannah was getting her drivers permit. She drove for 10 minutes today……inn a parking lot. lol

This dress she’s wearing is the one I was talking about last week. She turned this long skirt into a dress and designed the little jacket herself. She even sewed it all by hand! She’s awesome.  🙂

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 6, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This week was our first week of vacation! We’re taking the month of July off.

Three of of the kids  kept their heads buried in electronics of some sort until Wednesday. When they finally came up for air and played Monopoly. I was getting aggravated with all the electronics, and told them Thursday morning I was setting time limits. Like on school days. Well, you can imagine how that went over! lol

We lost electric on Thursday afternoon. Problem solved. lol So they spent a lot of time playing board games, looking at storm damage, and playing together.

We all had a rousing game of  “I spy with my little eye”. All 6 of us. That was fun. We haven’t played that in years. It helped pass the time. lol

Hannah spent a lot of time this week sewing. Hopefully, she’ll let me post pictures next week. She turned a really long skirt into a dress. She then designed and sewed (by hand!) a cute little jacket to go over it. I love it. I think it’s going to look really nice on her.

Today, the electric came back on at noon time. All four kids were in the middle of a Monopoly game, so they didn’t head straight for the computers and tv like I thought they would. I’m probably going to be hearing for the rest of the day how “I” was the first one on the computer. lol

We celebrated the electric being back on by making ice cream. Vanilla with homemade chocolate sauce. yum!

Our electric co-op (it’s all about electric this week, guess I should have done a unit on electricity! lol) had it’s annual meeting this past week and they always do a big fireworks show. So we went and the kids had fun. Then our church had festivities on the 4th, singing, dinner, and fireworks. I wasn’t able to go, but the kids had a blast. Ok, Dad did, too. lol  Here’s a picture from our churches firework show, taken by Abby.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 1, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This was our last week of school! We are now taking the month of July off! Did you hear my kids screaming on Friday afternoon? You may have also heard my incredibly big sigh of relief. lol I prefer year round schooling, but we all really need this break.

The kids will still be reading their Bibles. I know some of them have plans for books they want to read. I know that they will be spending a large amount of time using electronics and swimming in the pool. We will also be testing a few review items.

Me? My July to-do list is even longer than my regular one. I sure hope I can get even a fraction of it done.

I wanted to get a last day of school picture, but that never happened. They were thinking of crazy pictures they could pose for. lol And we just never got to the actual picture. lol

Here are a few pictures from this week:

Abigail loves Pinterest. Ok, I do to, but she spends more time on it than I do. lol She found a pair of homemade flip flops so she made some!

flip flop

They are made from braided knit material. She used an old t-shirt. After she made that pair, she decided to design her own pair.

flip flop

They came out great, and are more comfortable than the plastic version.

I always try to take pictures of the crazy positions that my kids get into while doing their schoolwork. Here’s Hannah laying on the couch doing her Kentucky State History on the computer.

I would not find that comfortable in the least, but she does.

I’ll be back next week to let you know how our first week of vacation went!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

June 23, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This week, after yet again having to remind my 17 year old son that he wasn’t spending enough time on his schoolwork, I was thinking about what to do. Then an idea came to me: time cards!  So I found Printable Time Cards.com with a lot of choices for free printables. You can also buy editable time cards if you want to personalize them.  Today was his first day filling out a time card. I didn’t say anything to him about the amount of time he spent on each subject, I just had him fill it out. Next week, I’ll start enforcing the time limits. He was ok with the time card today, but I’m thinking next week isn’t going to go as smoothly!

Hannah found a baby Praying Mantis on the inside of the front door. So of course, the kids had to hold it and play with it. And we took lots of pictures, too! Here’s Zach holding it. He wasn’t afraid of it, he was trying to hide his face because he knew I was going to post this picture here. lol I had them set it lose in our vegetable garden.

I had several other pictures to share. Hannah laying on the couch doing Kentucky State History on the computer, two snack items that she made for home ec. And some more…..I think…..However, the memory card with them on it has disappeared. Either that or I’m losing my mind and can’t see them on the card I have. sigh. I shall try to find them…..when the kids who know what memory card I used get up! lol

I posted a couple of reviews in the last week, for IXL.com (web based math), Creation Illustrated Magazine (“the Christian answer to National Geographic”), Pearson Homeschool myWorld Social Studies (My son loves this). So stop by and see what we’ve been using lately.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

June 15, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We had another great week. Everything is going along smoothly. Which is so nice! I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts! lol

I found Zach laying in the chair reading. I don’t understand how he thinks that is comfortable. lol

We’re working on a few things for reviews. One of them includes a coloring book. Zach loves coloring books. He colors while I read.

Did you notice the scissors? and the crayon shavings on the chair? yea, I did too. sigh He got the vacuum up and cleaned it up. Go Zach!

Abby said I want to color too! So she went on the computer and printed herself some coloring sheets.

I went in the dining room (we use the table as additional work space) this afternoon and found this:

Hannah made Apple Pie! yummy! Of course, she cleaned it up. Up until a few weeks ago, if the kids cooked, I cleaned it up. I decided I wasn’t doing them any favors. So they now have to clean up and wash the dishes they used. I always had to clean up and do the dishes in Home Ec class. And I still have to clean up and wash the dishes when I cook. So they need to learn how, too. 🙂

Our Homeschool Week in Review

June 9, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

School is starting to wind down here. We are still working till the end of this month, but the kids are finishing books. That makes the days lighter.

The new schedule is still going well. The kids have been doing their morning lists then going for a walk. (PE!) Then they come in and start on the book work. Lunch break, then they finish up.

We got a new school laptop last Sunday, so they are all trying to be the first to use it. lol

I don’t have any school pictures to share this week. I think I need to do a much better job of taking pictures!

We spent several hours this week as a family getting a clothes giveaway set up at church. We fill the fellowship hall with donated clothes and invite the community to come in to get clothes, household items, and toys for free.

When I say fill, I mean fill . lol It was a great success again today. We also have the clothes closet open Saturday mornings, where we sort clothes and give them away for free. Giveaways like this enables us to put out more at one time. It’s a lot of work, so we came home today and crashed!
