Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD – Review & Giveaway

April 4, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This giveaway is over. See the Magdalena DVD Winner!

resized magdalena usa final

Taking the original Jesus Film and adding new footage for women by women, the Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD portrays the story of Christ from the eyes of Mary Magdalene.

From the Campus Crusade for Christ, Magdalena: Through Her Eyes is the story of Jesus from a woman’s perspective. As she followed Jesus, Mary Magdalene witnessed changed lives, miracles and His tenderness toward women. Her own life was radically transformed when Jesus healed her and gave her a new purpose for living.

MY REVIEW:

I don’t remember seeing the original version of Magdalena before. When we were watching it, my husband said he had seen it before.

Even if you’ve seen the original before, you will still want to get Magdalena: Through Her Eyes. There is a short video for the today’s women entitled Free. Also included are a couple behind the scenes videos. As well as a few different promos to show to your church or group.

You’ll want to visit The Magdalena Today Website, where you can find out more about hosting A Movie Night With a Purpose, a great way to motivate women look at their own journeys, and in turn share the film’s message with others. You can download the resources for the movie night on the website, they are free, and editable downloads. You can insert your church’s information before printing. There is much, much more available on the website you’ll want to see and use.

There is an 8 week Bible study, called  Reflections of Hope. I was sent a copy of this, and it looks awesome. You watch a portion of the movie each week, along with a lesson. I haven’t started this yet, I did do a quick read of the booklet, though. I’m looking forward to the Bible study. I would love to do it with a group at my church.

We watch a lot of Bible based movies as a family, and we really liked Magdalena: Through Her Eyes. This is a great movie to sit down together as a family and learn more about God’s love for us all, and it especially shows God’s love for women.

I highly recommend Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD and the Reflections of Hope Bible study.

Have you seen this movie before? Would you like to see it?

Thanks to Propeller, I get to give away one of the Magdalena Through Her Eyes packets that I received to one of you!

The package includes:
Magdalena: Through Her Eyes DVD
Reflections of Hope Bible Study
“Women’s Ministry Leader” event letter
Special event marketing materials

My Review:

My oldest is 25, and my youngest is 10. I have spent a lot of time watching Christian movies with them. With new movies coming out all the time, we have watched a lot of movies over the years.

The Crossmaker is completely different from any Christian kids movie we’ve ever seen.

The Easter story is told by a Grandfather to his grandchildren. As he tells the story, they go back and forth between the kids and drawings of the Easter story while the grandfather is narrating. These are not just ordinary drawings, these are awesome full color drawings.

What a wonderful re-telling of the Easter story. We loved The Crossmaker!

Included on the DVD are 3 art lessons. Creative lettering using colored pencils, a drawing of the tomb with an angel using pastels, and 3 crosses on a hill using water colors, pen & ink, a& fluorescent crayons.

All 3 art lessons began with the instructor going over all the supplies needed and giving careful instructions.
“Never wipe your pastels with your arm or your sleeve.”

The Crossmakers Bonus Features are incredible! One is called Artful Music. Where she draws a large picture of Jesus carrying the cross while music plays. She draws to the music. Definitely watch this. It’s worth it.

Another one of the bonus features is The Plan of Salvation – video of drawings with voice overs. This is excellent.

Not only is The Crossmaker an entertaining movie and great art lessons, but it’s an evangelism tool as well.

The Crossmaker is an incredible DVD and will make an  awesome Easter present.

Thanks to Propeller, I get to give a copy of The Crossmaker to one of you!

The Grandfathers

March 25, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

From Sacrifice to Reconciliation, a Young Man Discovers His Heritage in The Grandfathers

TGF
The Grandfathers showcases both the burden and benefit of the Saint family’s legacy. Jesse Saint, Steve’s oldest son and Nate’s grandson, was not raised among the tribe like his father. He struggles to find his place under the weight of the memory of a famous grandfather he never knew and a heroic father he does not fully understand. This will all change after Jesse travels to the jungles of Ecuador with his family and gradually forms a special bond with Mincaye, one of the tribesmen who took part in his grandfather’s murder. Only then will he confront his family’s past and come to terms with his own destiny. And there he will find his place in this story.
The Grandfathers chronicles the personal quest for greater connectedness and significance. It is also a moving tribute to ordinary people living extraordinary lives in extreme situations. Jim Hanon, the film’s director, states, “Forgiveness is an awe-inspiring virtue that seems to have been passed on by the Saint family and is shared by many among the Waodani tribe—both demonstrate a profound capacity for forgiveness and healthy self-healing.”
Steve Saint consulted with Jim Hanon and Mart Green, EGM’s producer,  to help bring the story of his father, Nate, to screen through the feature film End of the Spear and the companion documentary film Beyond the Gates of Splendor. These films trace events leading up to and including the deaths of these men. More than that, they show the impact these events played on the lives of both their survivors and their killers. When the widows and their children went to live among the Waodani—a tribe regarded as the most violent on earth—they became an integral part of an incredible redemptive journey.

The Grandfathers, completes a trilogy produced by EthnoGraphic Media (EGM)that includes End of the Spear and Beyond the Gates of Splendor. These first two films, also from award-winning director Jim Hanon and producer Mart Green, tell the unforgettable and inspiring story of the killing of five missionaries by a stone-age tribe deep in the Amazon jungle. The impact of this tragic event lives on today in families of these slain men as well as among those responsible for their deaths.

My Review:

We have owned The End of the Spear and Beyond the Gates of Splendor for a couple of years now. My husband watched them and liked them. I still haven’t watched them. After watching The Grandfathers, however, I will be watching them sometime in the near future.

You don’t have to have seen the first two movies to enjoy this one.

There are funny moments, happy moments along with sad and tearful moments in The Grandfathers. I also learned a lot about the Waodani tribe. I found the fact that the parents never tell the kids what to do very interesting. They let the kids learn everything the hard way. Something I don’t think I could do with my own kids.

I love biographies, and The Grandfathers is like a biography. Lest you think it’s boring, this is a very interesting movie, it held the attention of my whole family. From my husband all the way down the the 10 year old.

Be forewarned, however, they do talk about murder, people getting stabbed with spears, and a young American woman dies. There is no violence shown, just discussed.  Just some things to be aware of if your watching with young children.

I loved and highly recommend The Grandfathers.

Lilly’s Wedding Quilt by Kelly Long

Lilly’s Wedding Quilt

By Kelly Long
Published by Thomas Nelson

Book Description
She isn’t looking for love. He’s mending a broken heart. It will take divine intervention for these two to get together
Local Amish schoolteacher Lilly Lapp is tired of weddings, afraid of horses, and immersed in caring for her depressed mother. But when Jacob Wyse, a handsome horse breeder from her small community rescues her from a dangerous accident, Lilly discovers a renewed interest in life and the possibility of love.
Yet Jacob has lost the one true love of his life to another man and doesn’t care to expose himself to the vulnerabilities of loving again.
God works to bring this unlikely pair into a sweet romance to produce a pattern of faith, which leads to the creation and comfort of Lilly’s Wedding Quilt.

My Review:

If your a regular reader here, you know how much I love Christian historical fiction. I also love reading books about the Amish. I have read quite a few books about the Amish by other authors. I liked the story line of Lilly’s Wedding Quilt. The characters seem real, as do the farm and community life described in this book.

Lilly’s Wedding Quilt includes depression in one of the characters. This is shown in a very compassionate way. Her community rallies around to support her, helping in many ways, from chores, to food, to rides to the doctor. How nice it would be if everyone who suffered from depression had such a supportive community.

Lilly’s Wedding Quilt is A Patch of Heaven Novel. I haven’t read the other book in this series. You don’t need to read the first book to enjoy the second.

I enjoyed reading Lilly’s Wedding Quilt. If you like reading books about Amish life, I think you’ll enjoy it too.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com BookSneeze book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Mine is the Night – A Book Review

March 16, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

She lost everything she loved.
He had everything she needed.
But could she find the courage to trust him?

From the back cover:

Stepping from a battered coach on a rainy April eve, newly widowed Elisabeth Kerr must begin again, without husband or title, property or fortune. She is unafraid of work and gifted with a needle, but how will she stitch together the tattered remnants of her life? And who will mend her heart, torn asunder by betrayal and deception?

Elisabeth has not come to Selkirk alone, Her mother-in-law, Marjory Kerr, is a woman undone, having buried her husband, her sons, and any promise of grandchildren. Dependent upon a distant cousin with meager resources, Marjory dreads the future almost as much as she regrets the past. Yet joy still comes knocking, and kindness is found in unexpected places.

Then a worthy hero steps forward, rekindling a spark of hope. Will he risk his reputation to defend two women labeled as traitors to the Crown? Or will a wealthy beauty, untainted by scandal, capture his affections?

The heartrending journey of the Kerr women comes to a glorious finish in Mine is the Night, a sparkling gem of redemption and restoration set in eighteenth-century Scotland.

I love reading historical fiction. And Christian historical fiction? Well, it doesn’t get any better than that in my book.  Mine is the Night does not disappoint!

Mine is the Night is the sequel to Here Burns My Candle. You can read my review of Here Burns My Candle. Liz Curtis Higgs is a grand story teller, and you won’t want to put Mine is the Night down until you have finished it. I know I didn’t!

Marjory and Elisabeth’s characters are based on Naomi and Ruth in the Bible. You will recognize the story as you’re reading the book. Marjory and Elisabeth are both strong in their faith. Their faith is what gets them through the difficult times in their lives.

You can go here to read Chapter 1 of Mine is the Night.

Even though Mine is the Night is the sequel, it is a stand alone book. However, if you read Here Burns My Candle first, you will have a deeper awareness of where Marjory and Elisabeth came from, and what they must overcome in Mine is the Night.

I loved Mine is the Night and think you will, too!

MOST – A Movie Review & Giveaway

March 1, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*Winner has been selected! Visit MOST DVD Winner!

Most the Movie

THE MOST:  The Deluxe Edition DVD
33-minute short film directed by Bobby Garabedian

MOST, the Czech word for “The Bridge,” is a fitting title for this 21st-century parable
about a loving father, his young son, and the fateful day when they attempt to head off
an impending rail disaster. Hundreds of passengers aboard an oncoming steam train are
completely unaware of the danger that looms as they head toward an open drawbridge.
As a desperate young woman witnesses an act of mercy beyond imagination, her life is
changed forever—as are the lives of all who see this film. Both heart wrenching and
glorious, MOST vividly portrays the greatest offering of love, sacrifice, hope, and
forgiveness known to man

The MOST is available on DVD starting March 1 at Christian stores and online.

You can visit MOST the movie on Facebook

Here’s the MOST trailer:

MY REVIEW:

We watched MOST tonight as a family. The teenagers and grown-ups really liked it. The 10 and 12 year old said it was ok. I think the problem they had was the sub-titles. It’s hard for kids to get the hang of reading the sub-titles while watching the movie.

MOST is based on a sermon illustration that pastors have used for years. I had never heard it, but my husband remembers hearing it.

There is one quote on the DVD case that says “John 3:16 in 33 minutes!”

Even though MOST is only 33 minutes long, this movie really captures how much the father really loves his son. And how many needy people were on the train. MOST also captures how much anguish the father felt when he had to sacrifice his son. I was heart broken for the father. The actor did an excellent job showing the anguish on his face.

The movie ends on a high note, showing how others lives were changed by this fathers sacrifice.

I also get to give a copy of MOST to one of you!
