Cast of Characters – Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God

September 15, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Cast of CharactersCommon People in the Hands of an Uncommon God

By Max Lucado

Book Description

Some of the most powerful stories from the Bible will come alive for today’s readers through these
inspiring selections from the writings of Max Lucado. Max provides a compelling look at the most
high-impact moments in the biblical narrative, drawn from his previous 20+ years of writing.
At the end of each chapter will be study guide questions so the reader can go deeper into this
scripture.
Extraordinary stories are told about the following characters:
Mary, Peter, Matthew, Joseph, Nicodemus, Woman at the Well, David, Esther, Job, The Samaritan Woman, John, Rich Young Man.

I really loved this book! I love the authors writing style. I have a few of his other books, and really enjoy reading them. When I read the Bible, I often wonder about the peoples lives, what they did, and how they lived. Guess I’m just curious like that. I guess that’s why I love biographies so much. This book gives us a glimpse into what their lives were like.

How might Mephibosheth felt when he was the only one of his family left alive. What did he think when King David sent for him? What did Lazarus think & feel when he heard Jesus calling his name?

Those are just two examples of the stories in this book. In Cast of Characters, Max Lucado uses both Old and New Testament examples of what God can do in common people lives.

“Like a pesky sibling, your past follows you wherever you go. Isn’t there anyone who sees you for who you are and not what you did? Yes. There is One who does. Your King. When God speaks of you, he doesn’t mention your plight, pain or problem; he lets you share his glory. He calls you his child.”

Don’t we all have things in our past we would rather forget? Who wants to be reminded of what we did wrong? I just love this quote from the Mephibosheth chapter. God doesn’t remember all the things that we did or the times that we failed Him. He sees what we can be, if we just turn our lives over to Him.

Sometimes, it seems that my problems are so big, so complicated that they will never be resolved. I found the David chapter very encouraging.

“Is your list of blessings four times as long as your list of complaints? Is your mental file of hope four times as thick as your mental file of dread? Are you four times as likely to describe the strength of God as you are the demands of your day? No? Then David is your man……A rough -edged walking wonder of God who neon-lights this truth:

Focus on giants – you stumble.
Focus on God – your giants tumble.

Lift your eyes, giant-slayer. The God who made a miracle out of David stands ready to make one out of you.”

I love how the author puts you there with your Bible heros, comparing their lives to ours. Bringing us to where God wants us to be.

“Mark it down. God does not save us because of what we’ve done. Only a puny god could be bought with tithes. Only an egotistical god would be impressed with our pain. Only a temperamental god could be satisfied by sacrifices. Only a heartless god would sell salvation to the highest bidders.   And only a great God does for his children what they can’t do for themselves. That is the message of Paul: “For what the law was powerless to do….God did” Romans 8:3 NIV

Oh, how thankful I am that my God is not judging me on what I do, how much money I have, how much I hurt or sacrifice. He loves me just because. And He loves you, too! Just as you are.

God used (and uses!) people to change the world. People! Not saints or superhumans or geniuses, but people. Crooks, creeps, lovers, and liars – he uses them all. And what they may lack in perfection, God makes up for in love.”

God can use little, old me, just as I am to help others in His name. To bring others to Him. To glorify His name.  No need to be perfect first. This is an impossibility anyway. Just come to Him with a willing heart. He’s there waiting…..

I highly recommend The Cast of Characters Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God by Max Lucado.
This book is full of inspiring stories of some of the authors favorite Biblical characters – all of whom were very human and imperfect…….just like us.

The Last Christian – Book Review & Giveaway

May 29, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

What would you do, if you had been living in a jungle your whole life? Your family and whole village dies? You are the last one on the entire planet who believes what you do? Then, as if your life is not incredibly difficult already, the people that are in your life that you can trust start dying? Then you find out someone is trying to kill you?

When I first started reading The Last Christian, I said Oh, no, I don’t like science fiction. I kept reading, even though it wasn’t my usual genre. You know what? The story line just drew me in, and kept me. And fairly quickly I might add.

Actually, it’s not really science fiction, I think it might be more accurately classified as “futuristic”. I know, what I have described doesn’t sound like science fiction or futuristic. How about brain transplants with silicon brains? How about eliminating physical death altogether? Aw, but the cost of these is much greater than money, with eternal consequences.

You can read an excerpt, and download first chapter online. I love it when publishers do this.

Here’s a video about The Last Christian

I really enjoyed reading The Last Christian and recommend it. My teenage daughter is reading it now, and liking it.

Radical

May 7, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I just finished reading Radical – Taking Back Your Faith From The American Dream by David Platt.

Is Jesus Worth This To You?

It’s easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily…

But Who Do You Know Who Lives Like That? Do You?

In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple–then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a “successful” suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus.

Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment –a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

This was such an awesome book! Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book.

The message of Biblical Christianity is not “God love me, period,” as if we were the object of our own faith. The messge of Biblical Christianity is “God loves me so that I might make him – His ways, His salvation, His glory, and His greatness – known amount all nations.” Now God is the object of our faith, and Christianity centers around Him. We are not the end of the the Gospel; God is. p.70

Every saved person this side of heaven owes the Gospel to every lost person this side of hell. We owe Christ to the world – to the least person and to the greatest person, to the richest person and to the poorest person, to the best person and to the worst person. p.74

Exciting things happen when the people of God believe the Word of God is worth spending their lives to teach to others. p.103

Yet, while caring for the poor is not the basis of our salvation, this does not mean that our use of wealth is totally disconnected from our salvation. Indeed, caring for the poor (among other things) is evidence of our salvation. p.110

There is a true God over this world who wants all people to bow at the feet of a loving Savior, and there is a false god in this world who wants all people to burn in hell

You can read an excerpt of chapter 1HERE.

This book will challenge you, your faith, and what you are doing with your life. I know it did me.

The author offers a challenge The Radical Experiment. That will challenge you and change your life. I plan on doing this experiment.

One part of the experiment is to pray for the whole world. He lists a website in the book, Operation World where you can find out information on every country in the world to pray for them. I plan on implementing this into our homeschool. What a wonderful way for the kids to learn to pray for others and learn geography.

The author has a companion booklet The Radical Question that is also available. You can read an excerpt HERE.

While supplies last, you can request a free copy of The Radical Question

I highly recommend both of these. I believe they should be read by all Christians. I am going to make them required reading for our high schoolers.

The Bridegrooms – A Book Review

April 23, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I was sent a copy of The Bridegrooms to review.

Tragedy hits the Allenhouse family on a hot summer night in Ohio when a mother of four vanished. Eight-year-old Vada virtually grew up overnight and raised her three younger sisters while her father lost himself in his medical practice in the basement of their home.

Now, Vada is a grown woman, still making her home with her father and sisters. Her days are spent serving as an errand girl for Cleveland’s fledgling amateur orchestra; her evenings with Garrison Walker, her devoted, if passionless, beau.

Dizzying change occurs the day the Brooklyn Bridegrooms come to town to play the Cleveland Spiders and a line drive wallops the head of a spectator. The fan is whisked to the Allenhouse parlor, and questions swirl about the anonymous, unconscious man.

Suddenly, the subdued house is filled with visitors, from a flirtatious, would-be sports writer to the Bridegrooms’ handsome star hitter to the guilt-ridden ballplayer who should have caught the stray shot. The medical case brings Dr. Allenhouse a frustration and helplessness he hasn’t felt since his wife’s disappearance. Vada’s sisters are giddy at the bevy of possible suitors. And Vada’s life is awakened amid the super-charged atmosphere of romantic opportunity.

My Review

The story unfolds over the course of one week. The book is divided into daily sections, i.e. Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I don’t think I have ever read a book that was divided into daily sections. I really enjoyed this format. It was different, and made it easy to follow the story.

If you read my blog, you’l know that once I start to read a good book, I can’t put it down. That’s what happened with this book, also. In fact, I read it twice before writing this review. Just because I liked it!

I would recommend The Bridegrooms to anyone who likes to read. Guess that pretty much covers everyone. lol

The Book of Ruth – Movie Review & Giveaway

April 19, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This giveway has now ended! random.org picked number 11….Congratulations Joan! Thanks to everyone who entered! I will be doing more giveaways in the future. Keep your eye out!

I love the story of Ruth in the Bible.

How hard it must have been for Ruth to leave her family, friends, and everything she had ever known to follow Naomi to Bethlehem.

How hard it must have been for Naomi to lose her husband, and then both her sons.

How brave these women were to travel alone to Naomi’s home in Bethlehem.

How God honored Ruth’s faithfulness and love towards her mother-in-law.

How God used Ruth in the lineage of King David, and the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

This movie, The Book of Ruth – Journey of Faith is based on the book of Ruth in the Bible.

I thought it would be fun to get my 4 youngest children to give their opinions of the movie:

“It was good, it had too much drama.” Calen age 15

“It was weeeeesome” Hannah age 14

“It was so good, I had a dream about it last night. Seriously, I did. It was rockin’ cool.” Abigail age 11

“I like it. I liked when Ruth ran after Naomi and fell on her.” – Zachary age 9

Wasn’t that fun? You never know what kids are going to say, but I typed their comments as they were telling me, and they approved them before I published them.

Our whole family really did enjoy this movie. I would recommend it for your family, also. In fact, I just might give you one! Pure Flix sent me one to giveaway!

To enter this giveaway for your very own copy of The Book of Ruth, just leave a comment on this post. This giveaway will end on Friday April 30th at 11:59 pm. After which time, I will use random.org to choose the winner.

Home Beyond The Sun – A Movie Review

April 8, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

In Home Beyond The Sun, Jenna, a college student, travels to China to teach English in a boys academy.

Jenna was abandoned by her mother at birth and adopted when she was 2. Her adoptive parents are now dead.

While in China, she meets a group of girls from an orphanage for castaway girls. One little girl, Chu Lee, captures her heart.

In the opening scenes, when Chu Lee was born, her mother was running away with her, so the authorities wouldn’t take her baby away. While she was running, they shot her. The baby was saved, because of the Bible her mother had carried. The bullet lodged in the Bible, and didn’t reach the baby. The Chief of Police takes the Bible with the bullet in it and keeps it on his desk.

Jenna would like to adopt Chu Lee, but she is only a college student. Her Godfather, who is a Pastor and helps parents find kids to adopt, helps find parents for Chu Lee. But due to a series of events, Jenna can not get the adoption papers signed in China.

Jenna ends up getting arrested because of her Bible, and told by the Chief of Police to leave the country in 6 hours or end up in prison. Jenna decides she can’t leave China without Chu Lee. In her attempt to rescue Chu Lee, they both get arrested outside the orphanage. The Chief of Police has them put in his car.

He then takes Jenna to the airport, so she can leave the country, where he talks to her and Chu Lee.

“I’ve arrested a lot of Christians, but the night her mother died, something changed. For 8 years I’ve been reading this Bible. It’s words have led me to a new life, a new faith. I have believed in secret for a long time, now it’s time to live like a Christian”

He signs the adoption papers so Chu Lee can leave the country and go to her adoptive parents in the United States. Upon returning home, Jenna finds her birth parents.

I won’t tell you who they are. You’ll have to watch the movie. 🙂

Home Beyond The Sun is inspired by a true story. Sometimes its hard for our kids to understand that you can get arrested just for having a Bible in China. If you want to give your kids an idea of what it’s like for Christians in China, have them watch this movie. My whole family loved this movie, myself, my husband, and the kids, boy 14, girl 13, girl 11, and boy 9.

We have watched a few movies by Pure Flix on Christian television. We get several Christian television channels on our Glorystar Satellite. Every movie that we have watched has been fantastic. Quality movies with a good Christian message for the whole family. I highly recommend Pure Flix movies, our whole family loves them.

While your here, don’t forget to enter this weeks giveaway!

*Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this movie for free in hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products of services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.” I received no other compensation for this review. This review is my own opinion.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
