I recently read the book When Skies Aren’t Blue. The tag line of is A Physician’s Personal Journey. Dr. Andy Laurie, a medical professional and a pastor, shares his personal story. And the spiritual help he found that got him through being seriously ill for years.

About the Book
Andy Laurie, MD, had a successful medical practice, and was starting a second career as a pastor. He had a beautiful, loving wife and four small children. His life was seemingly perfect.
Then he was struck with a devastating illness. It took him a long time, and multiple doctors to get a diagnosis. Only to find out there was no cure. He has now been battling this illness for almost two decades. In When Skies Aren’t Blue, Dr. Laurie has written prescriptions for you to find hope, strength, contentment, and joy.

About the Author
Dr. Andy Laurie is a board-certified radiologist who received his medical degree from UC San Diego. He did his post graduate residency at the University of Arizona. He practiced emergency radiology for nearly thirty years before illness caused him to recently retire. In addition, he has been a pastor at The Bridge Christian Church in Tucson, Arizona, for nearly twenty years. For much of this time, he has courageously battled a devastating disease of the autonomic nervous system. Dr. Laurie and his wife, Cyndi, were married in 1991 after he graduated from medical school. They have four grown children and make their home in Tucson with their beloved dogs.
When Skies Aren’t Blue Book Review
In When Skies Aren’t Blue the author is very transparent and authentic. He not only shares about his illness, but his thoughts, feelings, and spiritual needs. The good, and the bad. Then shares Bible verses and spiritual insight into what it’s like living with a serious and chronic illness, and what we can do to find the strength to go on, with hope and joy.
The book is divided into 10 chapters that the author calls Powerful Steps. The chapters average 7 pages each, so they are not long. That makes it easy to read for one that is not feeling well, and for those with busy schedules.
There are several graphics throughout the book to emphasize what the author is discussing.

Each chapter, or Powerful Step, ends with a prayer for you to pray. As well as a Prescription For When Skies Aren’t Blue. These prescriptions contain specific steps that you can take today that will help you find hope and strength when your skies definitely aren’t blue. They will help you find joy and contentment when the struggles of life have darkened your blue skies.

This may make it sound like a simple book. But it definitely is not. The author uses his personal experience to show us what it’s like to be in the trenches. And what it is like to be in the trenches for an extended period of time yet have hope and a growing relationship with God. One that will help us to not only get through the day, but to do so victoriously.
I highly recommend When Skies Aren’t Blue for anyone, with any struggle they are battling.
