Knowledge Quest TimeMaps Review

July 18, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I received a free download of Knowledge Quest Time Maps to review.

Photobucket

Here you will find resources that will help your students make connections in history, get inspired by extraordinary individuals and understand where in the world things happened. This is the stuff that helps kids enjoy history!

Photobucket

In Knowledge Quest Time Maps, there are 7 map sets available:

Ancient China
Rise of Rome
Fall of Rome
Rise of Islam
The Black Death
European Exploration
Atlantic Slave Trade

Knowledge Quest has Curriculum Integration Guides to help you use TimeMaps with your curriculum. These are free to download, and will be a great help in your lesson planning.

Photobucket

I had never used TimeMaps before, in fact, I don’t recall ever hearing about them. Too bad, because they’re great. As you click on the arrows by the year, the map changes. You can see the arrows below, on either side of “1430”. Below the year, you click on the “I” and the information box pops up. There is no audio, you have to read everything yourself. Clicking on the “Q” brings up a box with questions.

Photobucket

It is much easier to see how to use them, then tell you how. So here’s a video from Knowledge Quest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlx7A5wVqho&feature=player_embedded

Aren’t they great? A lot of kids find maps boring. These maps are anything but boring. They are very interactive. An electronic time line, combined with maps, that will be a great addition to your history studies. Older students could use them alone with their regular studies. For younger students, you can go over the maps and do the reading together. While we have been on summer break, we are doing a unit study on the United Kingdom as part of our Olympics study. I am using the TimeMap The Black Death to go along with our studies. The TimeMap really gives the students a better perspective on how far reaching The Black Death was. Much more so than just reading it in a history book as you can see the black on the map expanding.

Photobucket

Each of the TimeMaps listed above are available as a download for PC or MAC, and sell for $9.95 each. The TimeMap Collection includes all 7 sets  – 75 dynamic, animated maps, quizzes and encyclopedic information for each, as well as complete Teacher Notes with activities, map commentaries, timeline pages and student maps to label and color.  All for just $44.95 (Save $24.70 over purchasing individual sets) or $49.95 on CD ROM

Love Finds You in Mackinac Island, Michigan – Book Review

July 18, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As the Gilded Age comes to a close, Elena Bissette’s once-wealthy family has nearly lost its fortune. The Bissettes still own a home on fashionableMackinac Island, where they will spend one last summer in the hope of introducing Elena to a wealthy suitor. But Elena is repulsed by the idea of marrying for money.

Quickly tiring of the extravagant balls, Elena spends most evenings escaping back into Mackinac’s rugged forest. There she meets Chase, a handsome laborer who shares her love for the night sky. The two begin to meet in secret at an abandoned lighthouse, where they work together to solve a mystery buried in the pages of a tattered diary.
As Elena falls in love with Chase, her mother relentlessly contrives to introduce her to Chester Darrington, the island’s most eligible bachelor. Marriage to the elusive millionaire would solve the Bissettes’ financial woes, and Elena is torn between duty and love.

MY REVIEW:

I’m wondering what rock my historical fiction loving head has been under in order for me to miss this series of books! I counted 51 books in the Love Finds  You In…… series. This series is unique in that the books in the series are written by different authors. The books are are titled Love Finds You In…..then the name of the place. As in the title of this book shown above. All the novels in the series are named after American towns, and each draws on the compelling history or the unique character of a real place. What a novel idea! (pun intended, lol)

I really have no idea how I missed this great series, but now I want to read them all!

In Love Finds You in Mackinac Island, Michigan, Elena’s family is on one last vacation to their home on Mackinac Island. They will be selling their vacation home, and a lot more, due to financial hardship. When your family is accustomed to high society, this is a major life change. For Elena, the fact that her mother wants her to marry for money is something she just can not resign herself to.

While returning to her favorite place on the whole island, an abandoned lighthouse, she meets a newcomer. She doesn’t tell him her real name, so he has no idea who her family is. Unbeknownst to her, he doesn’t tell her his real name, either. Over the course of the summer, they fall in love. They are both shaken when they find out who the other one really is. Well, I won’t tell you how it ends, you’ll have to read that for yourself.

Love Finds You in Mackinac Island, Michigan is a fun, heart warming read showing us that love is more important than money.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Jerry Eicher’s bestselling Amish fiction (more than 210,000 in combined sales) includes The Adams County Trilogy, the Hannah’s Heart books, and the Little Valley Series. After a traditional Amish childhood, Jerry taught for two terms in Amish and Mennonite schools in Ohio and Illinois. Tina Eicher was born and married in the Amish faith, surrounded by a mother and sisters who were great Amish cooks. Visit the author’s website.

SHORT BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Jerry Eicher’s many devoted fans will be enthralled by this endearing novel in letters based on Jerry’s letters to and from his future wife, Tina, and their discovery that, indeed, absence does make the heart grow fonder.

When Eugene Mast leaves his Amish community in Worthington, Indiana, to teach in faraway Kalona, Iowa, he also must leave the love of his life, Naomi Miller.

For the next nine months of the school term, Eugene and Naomi keep their romance alive through love letters from his heart to hers, and from hers back to his.

Eugene writes of his concern that in his absence Naomi may find the attractions of another suitor to her liking.  Naomi worries that Eugene may fall prey to the “liberal” Mennonite beliefs in the community where he now lives.  Both can hardly wait until the school year is up and they’re finally reunited.

A poignant and tender love story that will warm the hearts of readers everywhere.

AND NOW…THE FIRST CHAPTER:

Naomi Miller stood beside the buggy, the corner of the front wheel inches from her side. Eugene Mast’s fingers were wrapped around hers. She looked up at him, the shadows from the moonlight hiding his blue eyes, leaving only the sides of his face visible.
“Do you really have to go?” Naomi whispered.
“Yah,” Eugene said. “It’s something I need to do. But I’ll be back before you know it, and things will be like they always were.”
“Nine months is an awfully long time.”
“Yah, but Da Hah will be with us. He will help us bear the pain of absence. And we are promised, you know.”
“But what will Bishop Enos say about this? We are both members of the church.” Naomi’s hands shifted in his. “What if there is trouble?”
Eugene laughed. “I don’t think there will be trouble. Bishop Enos knows I have no plans to forsake the church.”
“Even though you are running off to Iowa to teach at a Mennonite church school? It’s a terribly long way from Indiana.”
Eugene leaned forward, kissing her cheek. “I will write often, and that will help with the loneliness.”
Naomi pulled away. “Will you miss me? Perhaps a little?”
Eugene laughed again, causing his horse to turn his head to look at him. “I will miss you terribly, Naomi. I just believe this has to be done. If I don’t take the chance now, I’ll always look back and wonder.”
She sighed. “But it’s so dangerous out there. And the Mennonites can put all kinds of ideas in your head. Then you’ll never come back.”
He shook his head. “Please, Naomi, don’t make this harder than it is. I’ll come back. I promise.” He glanced at the envelope she had given him earlier. “Thank you for the card. I’m going to save it to open when I get to Iowa.”
“Okay. I think you’d better go,” she said. “I can’t stand this much longer.”
“I’m not much at goodbyes anyway,” he said. “I will always love you, Naomi. Goodbye…for now.”
“Goodbye,” she said, stepping back as Eugene climbed into the buggy. He slapped the reins against his horse’s back, waving once on the turnaround in the lane, his hand a brief movement from the dark interior. Watching the buggy lights move down the road and fade out of sight, Naomi stared long into the darkness. She then turned to walk back toward the house, pausing to look over her shoulder once more.

AUGUST
Monday evening, August 30
My dearest Naomi,
Greetings from Iowa. This finds me installed in the upstairs bedroom of my new home. The time was a little past eleven o’clock the last I looked. We pulled into the driveway of this little farm around nine, but I couldn’t see much in the darkness. We were met at the front porch by Lonnie and Luella Hershberger, the older Mennonite couple I’m staying with. The school board members who brought me out said their goodbyes and drove off in their van. I was shown around the house by Lonnie and Luella. After the tour, we ended up in the living room talking.
They seem like very nice people even though I’ve only just met them. Their house is a white bungalow with everything inside neatly arranged and in order. The kitchen is by the front door, with the living room in the back. I’m in the front bedroom, upstairs, overlooking the lawn. They said I could see the schoolhouse from my bedroom window, but it’s dark right now.
I feel strange and a little frightened to be out here alone. I’m missing you, of course, and the community. This awful sensation is wrapped around me, as if all the familiar props are knocked out from under me. In the meantime, I have to act as if everything is okay and be full of smiles. I can imagine right now you’re saying “I told you so,” but then maybe not, being the nice person you are.
I can’t thank you enough for the card you gave me before I left. It means so much to me. If I didn’t have your love to fall back on, I don’t think I could stand it right now. I know part of my problem is that I’m just so dead tired I could fall off the chair. The trip was long and more tiresome than I expected.
I suppose I’d better be off to bed. I won’t even start unpacking tonight. The suitcase is still open on the floor with only the things taken out that I need immediately. And that’s good enough for now.
Tuesday morning…
Good morning. I awoke to Luella hollering up the stairs. We had decided last night she would be my alarm clock since I didn’t bring one along. There is an electric alarm clock sitting on the desk, but I told Luella I didn’t know how to run one. And I sure wasn’t going to take the time to figure it out last night. She laughed and said hollering would be the Amish method anyway, and that it should make me feel right at home.
I smiled and said yah, but I didn’t mention that any reminder of home causes more pain than comfort right now.
I came downstairs to a breakfast of eggs and bacon, which I ate quickly. Then I stepped outside for a look around. The weather is nice, and I can indeed see the schoolhouse down the road. It’s a large, white, wooden structure with tall windows on the side. There’s a bell tower on top, placed toward the front. There’s a single tree in the yard.
Back upstairs, I started to unpack until I saw your second card. That brought a halt to the unpacking for a while. Who would have thought being away from you would be this hard?
As of now, the plans are that I will take the rest of the week to settle in at the schoolhouse. They only have a half-day scheduled for school on the first day, Friday. Then no school on Monday, since it’s Labor Day. Beats me how I’m supposed to keep myself occupied all that time with so little work to do.
The chairman of the school board told me the teacher who taught last year will be at the schoolhouse today by 10:00. She will give me details on the lesson plans and other pointers she might have on how to do things around here. I’ve been told it shouldn’t be that different from the year I taught at our Amish school, but I shall see.
While I think to mention it, I forgot to give you the other dove from my farewell cake at our families’ going-away supper. Somewhere in all the goodbyes it slipped my mind. I have the one, and you were supposed to get its mate. My sisters have it now and are supposed to pass it on to you. Hopefully we can match them up when the school year is over.
Luella said the mailman goes past at quarter till nine, so I’d better get this letter out. Here’s my address and a little rhyme. I know it’s not much, but it lets you know how much I’m missing you.
When the new moon hangs in the starry sky

I think of love, of ours, of you and I.

With all my heart,

Eugene

MY REVIEW:

My Dearest Naomi is based on letters written by the authors to each other. Jerry Eicher worked as a teacher in a Mennonite school. The letters in the book are addressed to Naomi and Eugene. There is a small prologue, a one page snippet of an in person visit, and a small epilogue. The rest of the book is comprised of the letters.

I really enjoyed reading this book. They letters tell the story of Naomi and Eugenes relationship, troubles, and excitements better than just regular dialogue could. The letters are sweet, funny, and really show the depth of Naomi and Eugene’s love for each other.

Saturday on the Farm

July 14, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I thought the Day Lillies in the Bible Garden were finished. I was surprised this week to three more blooms.

day lily

The Hibiscus bushes started blooming this week. I just love the beauty of these plants. From the extremely interesting bud, to the cone shaped flower, and finally to the lovely large flower. This is on the bush with white flowers.

hibiscus blossom

We have two bushes with pink flowers. Gorgeous. After last weeks bad weather, these bushes were laying on the ground. I didn’t think they would come back up on their on. I’m happy to say they recovered with out any props from me.

The Butterfly Bushes are still blooming. Although, I started cutting the spent blossoms off this week. The butterflies, of course, love them. So do the hummingbirds, and all kinds of bees.

We still have Gladiolus blooming. They are just about finished, though. It’s always sad to see the last a plants flowers for the year.

Gladiolus

All these pictures were taken by my 16 year old daughter, Hannah. I never made it out to take pictures. The plants in the vegetable garden are getting big. I have a nice cucumber almost ready to pick, too. yum!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 14, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We are still on summer break. We did, however start out unit study of the United Kingdom. We also started an Olympics lapbook. I love using the Olympics for homeschooling. I have ever since we started homeschooling in 1991. So that means out first Olympics was 1992. We study countries, geography, sports science and all the different sports.  The last winter Olympics, we discovered that we really liked watching curling. So we never know what’s going to hold our attention.

I’ll link to what we using for our studies in my upcoming Homeschooling with the Olympics post.

The highlight of the week for Hannah was getting her drivers permit. She drove for 10 minutes today……inn a parking lot. lol

This dress she’s wearing is the one I was talking about last week. She turned this long skirt into a dress and designed the little jacket herself. She even sewed it all by hand! She’s awesome.  🙂

Christian Keyboarding Review

July 13, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I received a download of Christian Keyboarding to review.

“Filling your students mind with God’s Word using typing skills.”

Photobucket

Keyboarding the the Christian School is in ebook format.

Why choose a printable e-book versus a web-based program? Think about the things you type.  Are they readily available to copy from the screen or are they something that you are looking at on a piece of paper?  Usually you are typing something from a rough draft.  If the lessons are only available on the computer monitor; your student will not get the needed skill of transferring information from paper to the computer.  A printable e-book allows you the preference of binding the whole book or just giving your student one page at a time.  A printable e-book is portable and economical.

I used the Elementary Version with my now 6th and 8th graders. Because once the 8th grader saw her brother doing it, she wanted to do it, too! They both really liked the program. They progressed quickly. Neither of them was satisfied to do one lesson a day. Each of them wanted to do several every day. If fact, on more than one day, I had to make them stop because they had already done several lessons. That’s how much they liked it.

“It’s a really good thing. I really like it. It helped me a lot. It taught where to put my hands because I didn’t know before.” – 8th grader

“I like it.” – 6th grader

These two progressed faster with this program than my older kids did using a typing program that was more like a game. The program tells you to print out the ebook and place to the right of the computer screen while typing. I printed out part of the book for them to use like that. They want you to do it this way because most inputting into the computer is done from written pages. However, there are many applications that we use and occupations that you are typing while looking at the computer screen. So after practicing typing from written pages, I had them practice some of the lessons while looking at the screen. They would open Notepad on one side of the screen, with Keyboarding for Christian Schools on the other side. Here’s a screenshot.

screenshot

These lessons are reminiscent of what I learned to type with in typing class. If you you want your kids to learn keyboarding from lessons and not from a game, try Keyboarding for the Christian School.

The Elementary Version of Keyboarding for the Christian School won Best Exclusive E-book from Small Christian Publishers this year.
Keyboarding for the Christian School sells for $15.95, the elementary version sells for $12.95. You can also purchase both ebooks together for $22.
Right now, Keyboarding for Christian Schools is offering a 20% discount. Use code  SUMMER2012 when checking out. The code will expire August 29, 2012.
