Crocheted Dishcloth Tutorial

February 3, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I have been making my own dish cloths for a few years now. I love them! They are so much nicer than store bought dish cloths. They make great gifts, too!

I use 100% cotton yarn. The regular worsted weight yarn does not work for dish cloths. I’ve heard bamboo works well, also, but I haven’t tried it yet.  The yarn I used for the dish cloth in these pictures was given to me a few years ago. I’ve made quite a few over the years, but only have enough left on the cone for one more, I think. Since I haven’t bought any cotton yarn to use for these, I don’t have a link to share. Once I buy some, and am happy with the results, I’ll share a link.

EDITED TO ADD: I’ve been using this 100% cotton yarn, Lily Sugar’n Cream Yarn, and the dishcloths come out great. This is a large cone of yarn. You’ll have plenty for dishcloths, washcloths, etc. (Note, this is NOT the yarn I used in these pictures)

The last few dish cloths I’ve made, I’ve made with raised stitches so they have more scrubbing power. It’s hard to see in these pictures, but you can see it better in the video below.

Ok, you can see the raised stitches better in the picture below:

Here’s how I make my dish cloths:

Crocheted Scrubbie Dish Cloth

Supplies:

100% Cotton Yarn   (it doesn’t take too much, you’ll be able to get a few out of a skein)

Size G Crochet Hook

Stitches Used:

Half Double Crochet – HD

Double Crochet Around Post – Shown in video

Chain 22, Half double crochet  in 3rd chain from hook and HDC across. Chain 2, turn.

HDC in 1st stitch, *Double Crochet around post of stitch below, HDC  in next stitch*  Repeat from * across row,  HDC in last stitch. You’ll have 20 stitches. Chain 2 turn.

Repeat rows until you have 17 rows, ending with HDC  row.  Fasten off, weave in ends.

The Double Crochet Around Post is a very easy stitch and works well on a dish cloth. I’ve also used it as a decorative stitch on afghans.

Here is my debut video showing you how to do the stitch:

Hope I’m not to scary in the video! lol

Happy crocheting!  🙂

My New Motto

January 30, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Daffodil

I am only one, but I AM someone.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.

I saw that on Facebook and just had to make it my new motto.  I need to re-read this numerous times a day.

I should just memorize it.  That’s how often I need the reminder!

What’s For Dinner?

January 30, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I’m roasting another turkey from our freezer this week. So it’s featured in a couple of meals this week. we’ll also have turkey sandwiches a couple of days for lunch. The Taco Soup I made yesterday was great. I’ll made it a time or two more before I share my recipe. Just to make sure it’s right.

Saturday – Sabbath- Make ahead meals- Cheeseburgers with cheddar cheese & carmelized onions, homemade sweet potato fries

Sunday – soup & sandwich day – Taco Soup, meatless

Monday – chicken – Roast turkey, brown rice, cooked turnips

Tuesday – pizza/pasta – Homemade Sausage, green pepper and onion pizza

Wednesday – super simple – left overs

Thursday – beef –  Meatloaf, fried potatoes, yellow squash casserole – using our home canned potatoes and squash

Friday – Sabbath Dinner –  Turkey, rice, green beans

Bible in 90 Days – Week 4 Check-In

January 29, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Hello everyone!

This check-in has found us finishing Day 21 and starting Week 4.

The newness of the reading program has now worn off, and we are down to the nitty gritty of trying to fit this much reading into our daily schedules. And some days, that’s really hard!

While I would prefer reading a little bit through-out the day, I usually end up reading the section all at once.

Remember, if you have a smart phone or other device that you can download a Bible app to, you can read on there while your going through your busy day. Reading on electronic devices is fine, as long as you are reading and not listening to an audio Bible. I don’t have a smart phone or other electronic device, so I read my paper Bible.  🙂

I hope and pray everyone has an AWESOME week reading God’s Word!

Leave a comment below with your progress and share how you fit your reading into your schedule.

Bible in 90 Days Resources:

Here is a Bible in 90 Days bookmark to print so you can check off your reading every day.

You can also visit Mom’s Tool Box to download several You Are Here in the Bible pages. These pages have all the major information from each days reading, major events, themes and people. These are awesome pages! Great for anyone looking for an overview of the Bible

Saturday on the Farm

January 28, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Spring is coming! Well, the flower bulbs think it is!

Spring Bulbs

I had to clear all the leaves and bedding out of the way so they could get more sun. We’ve had an easy winter so far, so the bulbs are early this year.

Which reminds me that I haven’t planned this years garden yet.  I’m just going to stick with the basics in the vegetable garden because I want to add more fruit this year.

I want to put in a strawberry bed this year. Even if it’s only 25 or 50 plants, I want to get started. I would also like to get a Meyer Lemon Tree and a Dwarf Fig Tree this year. We will also be expanding our Red Raspberry patch.

We have one Asparagus plant, that my husband found on the side of the road and transplanted here. I would love to get a few more.

Have you planned your garden yet?

Our Homeschool Week in Review

January 28, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since I’ve posted a homeschool uupdate!

We’re still plugging along with our schoolwork. Abigail and Zachary both finished their math books and started new ones. They were happy to finish, but not so happy to start new ones. lol

Abigail is now working in the Rod & Staff Understanding Math 6, while Zachary is working in the 5th Rod & Staff math book.

I also had to re-install our Switched-on Schoolhouse Kentucky State History. The cd got scratched, and wouldn’t work anymore, so I had to buy a new one.  I wasn’t very happy.   But my older two had used it, so it wasn’t wasted, I was just hoping to be able to use it with all 6 kids. The new version had an option to install so as not to need the cd every time. That’s the one I chose.  🙂

Calen has started learning to play the guitar. He’s been practicing a LOT, so his fingers are really sore. He does find some weird positions to practice in, though! lol

The girls have been doing great with volleyball. For being a 1st year team, with none of the girls ever playing on a volleyball team before, and some never having played volleyball at all, they’ve done GREAT! They won a couple of games, and some of the sets in the games they lost. They have a game on Tuesday, and possibly one later in the week, then the season is over.  The girls are disappointed the season is over!

They’ve been practicing on the front porch. Since they’re used to playing in the gym, they don’t like to practice on the grass. No broken windows yet!

Speaking of volleyball, Abby has been drawing lots of volleyballs in the last week or so. I found these pictures she had taken on the memory card.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
