Saturday on the Farm

October 8, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Even though we got down to 30 degress here one night last week, we still have a few flowers blooming.

The Mandevilla still has a bloom. It’s almost time to bring this in the house for the winter.

These are the Purple Hyacinth Beans growing up the tree instead of the trellis. lol Well, it grew up the trellis, too, it just out grew the trellis. This tree is over 12 feet tall and as you can see, the vine is taller.

The bean pods didn’t get as long as the package said, but are still pretty. The flowers are mostly gone, but the pods look cool.

These next two flowers are in pots on the front porch.

The Hardy Cyclamen in the bible Garden is blooming. I love these little flowers.

Each rose bush in the Bible Garden has a bud on it.

I have had roses up into November. Which is pretty cool.

The Dogwood trees is very colorful now.

And it’s time to harvest the Basil again.

My youngest son found a good use for all the leaves on the ground. Put them all in the trailer and take a nap! lol

It just cracks me up how he took his shoes and socks off and lined them up on the side of the trailer. lol

Our Homeschool Week in Review

October 7, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I never did get a homeschool week in review post up last week. Life just kept me too busy

Last Friday night, Abby had a slumber part for her 13th birthday. She turned 13 last Saturday. It was her first slumber party. She had a blast and I found out I’m way too old for root beer floats at midnight. roflol

Abby and her Reese Cup Cake

Abby and her gift from us – a prepaid cellphone SHE has to buy the minutes for!

School has been going well.  They all are moving right along. No major difficulties the past two weeks. A homeschooling mama can’t ask for more than that.  🙂

Bible Drill officially starts at church on Sunday. They have class/practice Sunday evenings at 5. Then church starts at 6. So it’s not really a lot on the schedule now. We just have to get to church an hour earlier. Next spring, during competition season is when it gets really busy. For now it’s just encouraging the kids to memorize and a little practice thrown in.

In her spare time, Hannah made 6 pillowcase dresses in the last two weeks.

Our church supplied the pillowcases, and the dresses will go in Christmas Shoeboxes. The money for the shoe boxes was raised by the kids at Vacation Bible School this summer.

This week, I also printed out some Hebrew handwriting sheets for Hannah. She’s learning Hebrew, and was happy to get them. She’s been using Read Hebrew Today from CurrClick.

I recently wrote a review on Aletheia Magazine, it’s a Christian magazine that teens can submit their stories, poems, drawings and photographs to for publication. Go check out the review. It’s a great magazine for teenagers.

Here are a few homeschooling links:

Hebrew Lessons – the same site I linked above for Hebrew printables also has Hebrew lessons. We haven’t used these yet, though.

Lovable Labels – Review & Giveaway

October 5, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Lovable Labels are labels invented by a mom when she couldn’t find any labels that worked the way she wanted. She needed labels for all her sons “stuff” when he went to day care. Leave it to a mom to come up with a great product that does what we need it to do!

Even though we homeschool, we have plenty of times that we need to label things for the kids. Day camps, sleep away camps, we also need to keep track of our stuff at church activities.

I picked the Think Pink Labels to try. The Think Pink Labels have a pink Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon on them. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and I like it that in support of breast cancer research, .50 cents will be donated to benefit the Research and Cure for breast cancer through the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

These labels, along with the other Loveable Labels are dishwasher and microwave safe. Making them perfect for water bottles, thermos’ and lunch boxes. I placed my first label on my water bottle.

We have been having a hard time keeping our names on these water bottle lids. Permanent markers, paint pens, all rub off. Now I have this awesome sticker on it. I was impressed with the amount of “sticky” on the label. These are not your ordinary labels!

These Think Pink Labels come in a set of 40 for $19.95 CDN.

Loveable Labels have many different label styles to meet your families needs, including shoe labels and Zipit! Tags for the kids zippers.

Lovable Labels has generously supplied us with a pack of “Think Pink! Labels” for one lucky winner!  Thanks, Lovable Labels!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The winner will have these Think Pink! Labels before the end of the month to help spread awareness!

and the book:

40 Days to Better Living: Hypertension

Barbour Books (September 1, 2011)

***Special thanks to Audra Jennings, Senior Media Specialist, The B&B Media Group for sending me a review copy.***

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

From the time Scott Morris was just a teenager, he knew he would do two things with his future—serve God and work with people. Growing up in Atlanta, he felt drawn to the Church and at the same time drawn to help others, even from a very young age. It was naturally intrinsic, then, that after completing his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia he went on to receive his M.Div. from Yale University and finally his M.D. at Emory University in 1983.

After completing his residency in family practice, Morris arrived in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1986 without knowing a soul, but determined to begin a health care ministry for the working poor. He promptly knocked on the doors of St. John’s Methodist Church and Methodist Hospital in Memphis inviting them to help, and then found an old house to refurbish and renovate. By the next year, the Church Health Center opened with one doctor—Dr. Scott Morris—and one nurse. They saw twelve patients the first day and Morris began living his mission to reclaim the Church’s biblical commitment to care for our bodies and spirits.

From the beginning, Morris saw each and every patient as a whole person, knowing that without giving careful attention to both the body and soul the person would not be truly well. So nine years after opening the Church Health Center, he opened its Hope & Healing Wellness Center. Today the Church Health Center has grown to become the largest faith-based clinic in the country of its type having cared for 60,000 patients of record without relying on government funding. The clinic handles more than 36,000 patient visits a year while the wellness center, which moved to its current 80,000-square-foot location on Union Avenue in 2000, serves more than 120,000 member visits each year. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on income.

Chef Boyardee House Party

September 30, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Have you heard about House Party.com? They are a website that manufactures use to get their products into the hands of the public and create lots of buzz about them.  When you have a house party, the manufacture sends you a party kit that includes hostess gifts, gifts for the guests, and free items to use at the party. If the party revolves around food, you get free coupons to purchase the food for the party.

In the case of the Chef Boyardee House Party I had last weekend, I received 6 coupons, each good for one can of Chef Boyardee Pasta. There were also cents off coupons for the guests. Here’s what else the party pack included:

An insulated lunch bag & a chef’s hat for the hostess and Chef Boyardee notepads for the guests. The House Party website also helps you party plan with lots of downloadable activities and party ideas.

Out of the 6 recipes included for me to try, I picked the Ravioli Lasagna and the Taco Roni to make

My 15 yo daughter volunteered to do the cooking for the party. She even took pictures while she was cooking! That’s my daughter! lol

I doubled each of the recipes, so keep that in mind if you make these. The lasagna recipe, for example, makes an 8×8″ pan, but I doubled and baked it in a 13×9″ pan.

Here are the ingredients for the Ravioli Lasagna:

You mix the canned ravioli with diced tomatoes then layer in the pan with cottage cheese. The recipe called for spinach, too, but some of my guests didn’t like spinach in their lasagna, so I left it out.

Then top with mozzarella cheese, and bake!

The Taco Roni was equally as easy. You mixed Beef a Roni with diced tomatoes, corn and blacked beans (recipe called for canned, but I used some out of the freezer).

You cooked this on top of the stove for a few minutes.

Then placed in a bowl and topped with cheese and crushed tortilla chips.
I served these with bread and cucumber & tomatoes from our garden lightly coated with Italian Dressing.

Everyone loved these quick and easy dishes! There was nothing left!

You can get all the recipes on Chef Boyardee’s Recipe Page.

If you haven’t signed up with House Party yet, what are you waiting for? These parties are awesome!

Also, if you read this post and would like to participate in a Chef Boyardee ChatThread survey, you will be entered to win a $1,000. gift certificate.
