Saturday on the Farm

July 30, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I didn’t edit the background on the flower picture. That’s the way it came out! I had this happen once before when I took a picture of a sunflower and the background came out blue. I think it’s so cool. I just wish I knew what I did so I could replicate it whenever I want to. I used the same setting to take all these pictures, so it’s not something I changed on the camera.

I don’t know for sure what kind of flower it is, as my daughter planted a pack of “cutting flowers. This is just one of the bunch.

I love how different the stages of the Hibiscus flowers are.

The other night, the guys brought in all these cucumbers and 2 zucchinis.

And then last night, they brought in all these! I better get busy making pickles and freezing and dehydrating the zucchini.

This is the first year we’ve had haws on the Hawthorne tree. The leaves are dying out on the tree, but the haws are hanging in there. lol

Here are the squash plants with the green beans behind them. There are actually a couple of squash plants that aren’t in the picture. There is another green bean fence behind this one that you can’t tell in the picture.

We haven’t had any yellow squash yet. But they’re coming!

Now that you’ve seen my gardens, what’s in your gardens?

Here are a few websites I found interesting and helpful this week:

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 29, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

My son does the sound at church, runs the microphones, etc. Here he is in front of the sound board last Friday night as they were getting ready for a tent revival behind the church. You can see the inside of the church in the back of the picture. Learning to run the sound board has been a great experience for him. He has been broadcasting the audio from our church services live over the internet for several months now. Last Sunday, he was even able to broadcast video live online for the first time.  He has pretty much taught himself how to do all that, as no one in our church knew how. He’s doing a great job!

I’ve been hard at work in the schoolroom again this week. It’s looking quite spiffy. I’m almost done, just a few odds and ends to finish up. A little more organizing of some of the bookshelves. They’re are done (even labeled!), except for two that have school books and papers that aren’t currently being used. Print outs and the like that we have either used in the past and will use again, or something planned for future use.

Yes you read that right, I labeled the book shelves. I will share that when I take after pics.  I still have a bin of books to sell/giveaway. I also haven’t gone through the papers and such from my older two. But it’s all corralled in a box for each. I’ll go through and pick out what I want to keep and make the rest available to them. Yep, I get to pick first. lol

We had a birthday yesterday, our youngest turned 11. He’s waiting for his party until the 2nd week of August when we have lots of family from out of state coming for a family reunion. I did give him a cupcake with a candle in it at 8:18 in the morning, his birth time. Then I gave him a present last night. A Cars2 giftpack that I won on a blog giveaway. It had a puzzle in it and he’s done it 5 times so far. Once last night, and 4 times today. I don’t think he’s done yet, as he loves it.

Hannah 15, has been at church camp all week. She’ll be home tonight. Full of stories of great times and lots of great pictures, I’m sure.

I answered a question on Facebook today asking for help with schooling a couple of kids at once and having younger kids, too. I thought I’d post my answer here, too

What I have tried in the past is give them a flag (they could make it) or some other small item for them to stand up on their desk/table when they need help. They’re not allowed to get up, yell for me, etc. They have to keep sitting and working as best they can, even going on to another subject if needed until I can get there to help them. If they are all at the table together, have numbered flags in the middle of the table and have them pick in order, first come, first served. It’s a great help to mom when you have lots of kids. I have 6. 🙂

Next week, school room pictures!

and the book:

40 Days to Better Living–Optimal Health

Barbour Books (July 1, 2011)

***Special thanks to Audra Jennings, Senior Media Specialist, The B&B Media Group for sending me a review copy.***

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

From the time Scott Morris was just a teenager, he knew he would do two things with his future—serve God and work with people. Growing up in Atlanta, he felt drawn to the Church and at the same time drawn to help others, even from a very young age. It was naturally intrinsic, then, that after completing his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia he went on to receive his M.Div. from Yale University and finally his M.D. at Emory University in 1983.

After completing his residency in family practice, Morris arrived in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1986 without knowing a soul, but determined to begin a health care ministry for the working poor. He promptly knocked on the doors of St. John’s Methodist Church and Methodist Hospital in Memphis inviting them to help, and then found an old house to refurbish and renovate. By the next year, the Church Health Center opened with one doctor—Dr. Scott Morris—and one nurse. They saw twelve patients the first day and Morris began living his mission to reclaim the Church’s biblical commitment to care for our bodies and spirits.

From the beginning, Morris saw each and every patient as a whole person, knowing that without giving careful attention to both the body and soul the person would not be truly well.

SHORT BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Many of us would admit to being a little out of balance these days. We all want to feel happier, healthier, and more vibrantly alive. What if in just 40 days we could reach a new level of wellness and balance that we’ve never experienced before? In 40 Days to Better Living: Optimal Health (Barbour Publishing, July 2011), Dr. Scott Morris, founder of Church Health Center, the largest faith-based clinic of its type in the United States, offers a straightforward and successful plan to get there.

The first in a series of striking full color health and wellness books by Dr. Morris and the Church Health Center staff, 40 Days to Better Living: Optimal Health confirms and clarifies what many of us already suspect: living the life we’ve always wanted must go deeper than a diet and exercise program and an occasional attempt to “do better.” Morris is convinced that to achieve the highest degree of wellness requires a multi-dimensional approach and a concentrated effort to be healthy in both body and spirit. He believes, “True health is grounded in the spiritual life that embraces the physical bodies God gives us.” Morris adds, “Instead of the absence of disease, I see health as the presence of those elements that lead us to joy and love, and that drive us closer to God. Finding balance by nurturing our spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical needs is essential to the real health of the whole person.”

40 Days to Better Living: Optimal Health offers clear, manageable steps to life-changing attitudes and actions in a context of understanding and grace for all people at all points on the journey to optimal health. With plenty of practical advice, spiritual encouragement, and real stories of those who have found a better life, this simple and skillfully crafted book inspires readers to customize their own path to wellness by using the 7-Step Model for Healthy Living as a guide:

· Nutrition: pursuing smarter food choices and eating habits

· Friends and family: giving and receiving support through relationships

· Emotional life: understanding feelings and managing stress to better care for yourself

· Work: appreciating your skills, talents, and gifts

· Movement: discovering ways to enjoy physical activity

· Medical care: partnering with health care providers to optimize medical care

· Faith life: building a relationship with God, neighbors, and self

My Baby…

July 28, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

turned 11 today!

At 8:18 this morning I gave him a cupcake with a candle in it. Then my contest winnings came in the mail today just in time. Don’t worry, we’ll have other presents for him at his party, too. 🙂

He has opted to wait about 2 weeks for him party so he can have it when lots of cousins are here for a family reunion.

This little dude is my buddy. He’s always wanted to give his mother a kiss and a hug. Except being a little boy, a hug practically knocks me over. lol

My baby turning 11 doesn’t make me feel old. It was my oldest turning 25 last month that really made me feel old.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
