Saturday on the Farm

July 16, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We have very spoiled chickens. I’ve shared pictures before of them at the front door waiting for food. They stand there looking in at us. I think they’re seeing if we’re eating anything good. lol They will even knock on the door by pecking it if we’re not paying any attention to them. It really surprises our guests. lol They will even eat out of our hands. Here’s Hannah feeding a hen bread.

Last week, I shared pictures of the cucumber blossoms. This week we have cucumbers!

Yum! Looks almost ready to eat! Now, I wonder who I’ll have to share it with? lol

Hope you enjoyed my little tour this week. How are your gardens growing?

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 15, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

One of the kids recently told me that they didn’t have to do run around outside for PE because they were on vacation. lol They have been so busy playing outside that I haven’t even had to enforce the one hour video game rule. Hide and go seek is a popular past time. Even all the teenagers play. They love it.

We got the new pool set up this week. So they are getting lots of exercise there, too.

Hannah made her own modest bathing suit this week. (all the info is at that link) She did a great job!

And I’m still working in the schoolroom. The bookshelves have all been sorted through and put in order. I even labeled all the shelves today. Now I’m wondering how long it will last once school starts again. lol I’m also making lots of progress on the paper mess. I think I’ve got all the papers shoved in all the corners out. Am I the only one whose kids love to crumble paper and shove it in any available space?

The kids haven’t gotten too much reading done for the summer reading program. Hopefully, next week, they’ll get some done.

They did make a video this week, though. They film what they call “The Geek Show”. They do different skits and songs. Just whatever they come up with. This one is sooooo funny! I was laughing so hard most of the time, I was afraid I was going to ruin their video. lol I’m not usre yet if they are going to post this one online or not. Since the cousins were in it, too, they have to get their parents permission before posting online. If they do, I’ll share the link.

Modest Bathing Suits

July 14, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Modest bathing suits are so hard to find. I’m not just talking for us ladies. I’m talking about girls and teenagers, also. You can order them online, but at an average price of $75, if you need more than one, it’s cost prohibitive.

My 15 yo, Hannah, won an e-book last year on how to make your own modest bathing suit.  I bought her the fabric from Spandex House. I was pleased with their service. And the colors on the fabric she picked were well represented in the picture online. It was $10 a yard and we bought 4 yards. Add in a little elastic and thread and she got a nice, 4 piece modest bathing suit for around $50. including shipping. She did pretty much use all 4 yards of the fabric.  Even though she’s not experienced in drafting her own patterns, the e-book walked her right through it.

She made 4 pieces. An undergarment, a top, shorts and a full circle skirt.

She even made a matching wide headband. 🙂

She did an awesome job with no help from me! You can read her post about sewing her own bathing suit over at her blog Daughter of YHVH.

Pool Watching

July 14, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I’m out here sitting by the pool watching the kids. Thankfully, it’s a very nice evening.  We had to get a new pool this year. When we tried to set up the old one, we found a hole in the bottom. My husband tried to patch it, but the patch came right off. The kids didn’t mind, though. As we got a bigger one.  18 x 48. If the 6 of use all get in together we really need that size. That’s not counting other kids, either.

Only 3 of mine are in the water. There are also two nieces in there. The rule is supposed to be that all other kids have to bring an adult with them. But no one could watch them tonight. And my kids wanted to swim with their cousins. So here I sit. It makes me kind of nervous as the water is over the head of the youngest, who will start kindergarten in the fall. So, she’s old enough to let me know if she’s in trouble. But I still don’t like it. I just don’t want anything to happen on my watch.

Kids are having fun.

I think it’s hysterically funny that as soon as Abby saw the camera she asked if this was going on my blog. roflol

Then there’s the ever popular getting flipped by your sibling.

So the kids are having a blast and I’m blogging. A pretty good life. Except I don’t have any chocolate. lol

PrayerWalk by Janet Holm McHenry

July 12, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

From the back cover:

Challenge your body,Feed your spirit, Change the world.

Ask any  Christian woman about her most recent New Year’s resolutions, and you’ll likely find that “exercise regularly” and “pray more” were at the top of her list. We all long to look and fee out best, to live actively and healthfully. More than that, we desire to connect intimately with our God. Yet physical health and spiritual growth often take a back seat to the urgent demands of grocery shopping and bill paying, time with family and friends, and lon hours at the office.

It’s time to exercise your prayer life.

PrayerWalk – Becoming a Woman of Prayer, Strength & Discipline is not just a prayer book, and not just an exercise book. It’s a combination of both. The author, Janet Holm McHenry, did a great job of balancing the two.

My favorite quote from the book is “However, as Christian women we are not to wear ourselves out while we neglect our relationship with God.” So true! As wives and mothers, we tend to put everyone else’s needs first. To the detriment of our health. And most definitely to the detriment of our relationship with God. While meeting our families needs is extremely important, God does not want us to put our families ahead of Him. We can not take care of our families the way God wants us to, if we don’t take care of our relationship with God first. We also can not take care of our families if we don’t also take care of our own health.

Prayerwalking will help us take care of putting God first and help us take care of our health at the same time. The author has helpful tips for starting to walk, with everything from stretching to what kind of shoes we should wear to staying safe while walking. She also has great tips for helping us to fit walking into our busy schedules. Mrs. McHenry includes lots of great information to help us improve our prayer lives. With suggestions of how to pray and who to pray for, including Bible verses.

There is a study guide in the back of the book that looks great. For each chapter in the book, there are questions under the headings Warm Up!, PrayerWalk…into the Word, and Stretch Out! Warm Up contains questions that help us figure out why we are doing what we’re doing. Prayer Walk…into the Word has Bible verses and questions to help us become strong disciplined women of God. Stretch Out has questions that draw us out of our comfort zones and help us grow into the women God wants us to be.

There is also a 30 Day PrayerWalk challenge that has a Prayer Focus and a Fitness Challenge for all 30 days. A great way to get started! Once you have established your PrayerWalk routine, there is a chapter on How to Organize a Community PrayerWalk Event. This will help you whether your organizing a PrayerWalk for your church, or your whole town.

I highly recommend PrayerWalk to help you become a woman of prayer, strength and discipline.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
