Making a Home

MakingaHome

I tried to make a Gluten Free, white bean, banana bread this week. It didn’t work. It wasn’t a total waste, though, as the chickens loved it. lol I really don’t like having flops in the kitchen, but it’s inevitable I guess.

I found this great idea the other day at   BBQ Treats and Tips at The Parenting Connection . Fill Mason jars with ice cream, then put the jars into a bucket of ice and sever with a topping bar. Sprinkles, chocolate sauce, fruit, whipped cream. Doesn’t that sound like fun? A great way to get ready for a party ahead of time! Mason jars can go in the freezer, too, so you could even fill them the day before! My sons birthday is the end of this month and we’re having a family reunion the first week of August. This would be a great idea for either one!

Homemade BBQ Sauce

July 11, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Store bought BBQ sauce is full of high fructose corn syrup so I wanted to make my own to avoid it. Really, all store bought condiments are mostly HFCS nowadays. Unless you pay a very high price for HFCS free condiments at health food stores, it’s hard to avoid. I’ve been experimenting with making my own BBQ sauce. I’m moving to salad dressings next. 🙂  If you like a less sweet bbq sauce, you can cut down on the brown sugar.

Homemade BBQ Sauce

2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
10 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/2 tablespoon pepper
1/2 tablespoon onion powder
1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer to 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Embeding Videos in WordPress

July 9, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I’ve been learning a lot since moving to WordPress. Some things are easy, some take longer to learn. Like embedding videos.

I like to post videos. Especially on Sunday’s. So I set out to learn how to do this. It’s complicated in WordPress. You can’t just take the embed code from places like YouTube and place the code in a post like on Blogger.

There are plugins available that are supposed to help. I tried one, and it wouldn’t work for me. So after some more searching, and reading lots of comments, here’s what I learned.

How to Embed a Video in WordPress

Click on:

settings

media

embeds

auto-emeds – check  “When possible, embed the media content from a URL directly onto the page.”

Save changes
Then in your post,   in HTML tab, (not visual tab)   place the URL   (not the embed code)   for the video you want in your post.  No extra html code needed, just the URL

Publish post as usual

It worked for me. Let me know if you try it and it works for you!

Saturday on the Farm

July 9, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I sent my 15 year old daughter out yesterday to take pictures for me. Here’s what she saw:

The Raspberries are giving us a few a day. And we’ve been eating them all out of hand. We actually get more raspberries in the fall. So hopefully, I’ll have enough to do something with.  We love just eating them straight, but it would be nice to put enough in the freezer to have a raspberry crisp or something for Thanksgiving dinner.

The Blackberries are coming in, too. I have enough in the fridge to make something now. The kids all want Blackberry Cobbler, so I guess I’ll make that first.

The Butterfly bushes are blooming!

The white one is so big and beautiful. This was pruned back a LOT in the spring, too.

The purple one is smaller in comparison, but is almost 5 feet tall.

The purple flowers are beautiful, too.

Finally, some action in the vegetable garden to report. lol The Cucumbers have blossoms!

From the reports I’m hearing, the squashes and tomatoes have blossoms, too. And we have beets the size of a pea. lol

I never tire of looking at the goats on the hill! There’s just something so peaceful about animals grazing on a hill.

Hope you enjoyed my little tour this week. How are your gardens growing?

Here are some links I found interesting and helpful:

Chicken Chart
Worm Composting
Dewberries– I don’t recall seeing any of these on our property, but I will keep my eye out for them

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 8, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

With 3 out of 4 kids on vacation and the 4th old enough to direct her own work, I’ve been working on organizing the schoolroom.

I have papers from all 6 kids in there, even though the oldest two are 25 and 23! Time to sort it all out. I’ve been finding lots of treasures. I tried to convince the kids that papers done by their older siblings when they were little are like gold. They’re not buying it, though. lol

A word of advice, put names and dates on everything! I have so many cute papers and drawings with no names!

I have found so many spiral notebooks with just a few pages used. So I’ve been ripping out the used pages so we can use the notebooks. I wish I had taken a picture of the stack before I put it away. I think there was about 20!

I found this inside one of the notebooks.

Apparently, she was excited to finish her book! lol

I didn’t take a before picture of the schoolroom. Might have been too scary.  Here’s what it looked like this afternoon.

The boxes are full of my older 2 kids papers. The green bin behind the desk is filling up with books to get rid of. I’m also having the kids go through books and picking some they don’t want anymore.

Then I’m going through that stack, and picking out the ones I don’t want to get rid of. Goodnight Moon isn’t going anywhere! lol

Here are a few links I found interesting and helpful this week:

Cataloging the Homeschool Library – I really need to do this!

Mom’s Tool Belt has lots of printables

Including Homeschooling Pages

House Rules – We have most of these, too. lol

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
