The New Little Women Movie Review

September 24, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of Little Women by Lousia May Alcott.  I have loved this book since the first time I read it! I have also thoroughly enjoy watching every Little Women movie that has been made. Several times! lol

Now there is a new Little Women movie!

Sisters—and dreams—are unique in their ability to inspire, encourage and change the world. For 150 years, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women has motivated women of all ages to dream together and celebrate family. Coming to theaters for the first time, a modern retelling of LITTLE WOMEN brings a new generation together with their mothers, sisters and friends.

From girls playing in the attic to women living with purpose, the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy—are committed to always supporting each other. Yet, growing up sometimes means growing apart. An aspiring writer, Jo leaves for New York determined to publish a novel. In the wake of rejected draft upon draft, her editor challenges Jo to write about something more interesting—her family. When tragedy brings the sisters back home, sticking together takes on new meaning. As Jo comforts her sick sister, Beth asks for one thing: a story. Jo knows the perfect one … by heart.

The New Little Women Movie Review

Since I am a big fan of Little Women, I noticed a few things that bothered me about this new movie.

It is supposed to be set in harsh times, but they don’t seem to have it that bad off. I really noticed no representation of harsh times in the movie.

In previous versions, Marmie and the girls are shown repeatedly doing their part to help others. In this version, volunteering is mentioned, once that I noticed, but there is nothing shown of the girls and Marmie doing anything to help others. That was such a big part of the original, and subsequent versions, that it is noticeably absent. The girls seem wrapped up in themselves instead of caring for others.

In previous versions, Marmie was home every night, and there a was family life. When she wasn’t there, there was a housekeeper to take care of the girls. In this version, Marmie isn’t seen very much. She certainly isn’t shown with the girls every day. With no housekeeper, it seems like the girls are just on their own most of the time.

Another thing that was changed was Beth’s illness. Jo cut her hair, her one beauty, in solidarity to her sister Beth who was diagnosed with leukemia. Jo sold her hair to pay for the gumball machine she broke when leaving the hospital in a fit of rage after Beth was diagnosed.

There are significant differences between this movie and previous movies, and the book. I hope it doesn’t seem like I am picking this movie apart. When you’ve read the book and seen other versions of a movie, you notice differences. I don’t think that diminishes this movie, though.

Overall, I enjoyed this new Little Women movie. It’s an entertaining movie about family, friendship, love, and purpose.

Here, Clare Niederpruem, the writer and director, joins the cast to talk about this modern retelling of Little Women.

Little Women has a PG-13 rating for some thematic elements and teen drinking.

Little Women releases in theaters nationwide on Friday, September 28th, 2018.

For more information about Little Women, visit the official Little Women website. Follow Little Women on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

My New Baby Granddaughter and a The Picket Fence Giveaway

September 23, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I recently became a grandmother for the first time. She’s a month old now! So, as you can imagine, I’ve bought a lot of baby things over the last few months. lol

I recently received a $50 credit to The Picket Fence to purchase anything on their site. There are so many great products on the Picket Fence site, that at first I had a hard time deciding what to choose. You guessed it! I bought things for my granddaughter. lol They have an awesome baby collection.

Since I started getting ready for my granddaughter early, very early lol, I had time to crochet some things, too. I had made this baby girl sweater set for my grandmother’s hope chest that I filled with afghans, sweaters, and hats.  I was so excited to give it to my daughter at her baby shower, and can hardly wait to see it on my sweet little granddaughter when it gets cool enough for her to wear it.

Anyway, back to baby shopping! lol I bought my sweet, little grandsugar this silicone teether.

The Picket Fence Shop Giveaway

Is this not the cutest llama you have ever seen?! In addition to the llama, the silicone teether comes as a unicorn and a taco, too. My daughter would have loved it if i got her daughter a taco teether. She loves tacos! lol But I fell in love with the llama!

I also chose this Kate Spade, ksny Baby Melamine Dining Set – Hey Baby. It’s so cute! I loved this set because it’s suitable for boys or girls. It’s perfect for when baby is first learning to eat & drink and for when they can feed themselves.

Meet My Granddaughter!

September 7, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Just over 2 weeks ago I became a grandmother for the first time! My youngest daughter, out of three, and child #5, out of 6, got married last September. They promptly had a baby. lol About 3 weeks before their 1st wedding anniversary!

Meet Moriya Ann! Isn’t she beautiful? She weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

One hour old:

an hour old

4 days old

4 days old

5 days old with my husband and I. A rare picture of us. lol  We just had a 37th wedding anniversary earlier this week!

5 days old

11 days old:

I found the crown in the gift shop of my local hospital. The package says:

The day you were born,

we placed this on your lil’ head

Cherish and protect it for your bouquet

the day you wed…

crown poem

I just love it! And it makes for some gorgeous newborn pictures, too! I debated for a couple of months before she was born, whether I should get one or not, as it was expensive. I finally decided to go ahead and get it. While I was buying it, the woman that runs the gift shop told me that she loved them. “You never know if we will be around to see our grandkids get married. This way, she will have you there with her.” Oh my! Now I want to go buy a bunch for future granddaughters! lol

I saw this on Facebook the other day. Love it, too!

Healed by Grace 2 Review & DVD Set Giveaway

September 2, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love a good family movie. One that you can sit down and watch without worrying about what your kids are being exposed to.  Maybe you don’t have young kids anymore, I don’t, my youngest is now 18. I still love a good family movie so “I” don’t have to worry about the language, or other content that I don’t want to see myself.

Healed by Grace 2 is just that kind of movie. It is Dove Approved for all ages. Healed by Grace 2 release in digital format on 8/20/18 and releases on DVD on 9/18/18. I was able to watch a digital screener version of the movie for this review.

Gauff, still recovering from the death of a special horse named Grace, now faces the challenges of teen negotiation. Gauff finds he must swallow his pride and ask his daughter Brandy for forgiveness. A humorous and inspiring story of how God’s grace works in mysterious ways.

Gauff, Jesse’s grandfather, has to come to terms with his behavior while he was raising his daughter. While Brandy is racing to get to her father’s to get Jesse, Gauff, prays for forgiveness, and apologizes to his granddaughter. When Brandy & Jesse are reunited, Brandy tries to take Jesse home, but she doesn’t want to leave once she finds out her mother will be fine. While there, Brandy confronts her father about his behavior when she was a kid. He admits there is no excuse for his behavior and that he thought she was better off without him in her life. He then gets down on one knee and begs for her forgiveness, and a chance to start over.

The themes throughout Healed by Grace 2: Ten Days of Grace are faith, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Healed by Grace 2 shows us that we can overcome out pasts. Paul Apostle of Christ – Review & Giveaway

July 15, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I sat down in the living room the other night to watch Paul, Apostle of Christ with my husband. We started it at about 9 pm while waiting for some of our kids to get home. Which was totally a bad time to start watching a movie. lol The movie starts out slow, and I just couldn’t follow it. I thought it was just me, but my husband said he had trouble follow it as well. So we turned it off to try another day. A few days later we tried again.

Paul Apostle of Christ Movie Review

We were right about the it moving slow in the beginning. But we were able to follow the story line a lot better the 2nd time around.  I should know better than to start a movie that late. lol Thankfully, they included several story line screens that really helped us follow along.

Paul Apostle of Christ Movie Review

Paul, Apostle of Christ starts when Paul is already in prison, and ends with his death. It is not set entirely in the prison. The story also follows Priscilla, Aquila, and Luke, to name a few. So we see them outside of the prison, in their community, with others. We see the difficult days of early Christianity, and the effect of Emperor Nero’s persecution of the early church.

Paul Apostle of Christ Movie Review

Paul, played by James Faulkner, who goes from the most infamous persecutor of Christians to Christ’s most influential apostle, is spending his last days in a dark and bleak prison cell awaiting execution by Emperor Nero. Luke, played by Jim Caviezel, his friend and physician, risks his life when he ventures into Rome to visit him. Paul is under the watchful eye of Mauritius, played by Oliver Martinez, the prison’s prefect, who seeks to understand how this broken old man can pose such a threat. But before Paul’s death sentence can be enacted, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of “The Way” and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. Their faith challenged an empire. But their words changed the world.

Paul, Apostle of Christ is written and directed by Andrew Hyatt, and also stars Joanne Whalley and John Lynch.

Paul Apostle of Christ Movie Review

While Paul, Apostle of Christ does start out slow, it definitely gets better! While I would have liked to see more of Paul’s story, how his name change came about for example, this is a very enjoyable movie. This movie is rated PG-13 for violence. There are a few scenes that kids might find disturbing. I suggest watching it yourself first, to be sure it’s something you want your kids to see, and that your kids can handle it.  Check out the trailer.

Chocolate Cookies

July 7, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I adapted this recipe from my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. I don’t like to use shortening in baking, but you can substitute shortening for half the butter if you want.

Chocolate Cookies

1 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
3/4 cup cocoa

sugar for the tops

In a mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugars, and baking soda together. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour and cocoa.

Drop by rounded teaspoons (I use a cookie scoop) onto ungreased cookie sheet. Using the back of a spoon dipped in sugar, flatten the cookies slightly. (Like peanut butter cookies, only with a spoon). I like to sprinkle a little extra sugar on top as well.

Bake at 375 for 8 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

You can stir in chocolate chips, or any other kind of chips to these cookies. You can also add nuts if you want.

These cookies freeze well. I never seem to have enough freezer containers, so I freeze cookies on a paper plate in a freezer bag.

Steps of Faith Movie Review and Giveaway

June 6, 2018 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*I watched a screener copy of this movie for free online to facilitate this review.
What would you do if God told you to pack up and move to a new city? What if you had to walk up to someone and tell them that God told you to come work for them?

Both of those things would be hard, wouldn’t they? Outside of our comfort zone for most of us.

But that’s exactly what happened to the main character, Faith, in Steps of Faith.

Steps of Faith

Steps of Faith opens with Faith getting toilet papered by a boy at church. lol She does not have a good track record of working with kids.

When Faith tells her family that God wants her to move and work with kids, they are not supportive. They point out that she doesn’t go to church more than once a month, and how she doesn’t even like kids or animals. After that argument with her parents, she asks God for one more sign that this is really what He wants her to do. The next day at work, her boss asks her to send a check to Steps of Faith. That’s her sign to go. She goes to her parents again to seek their blessing on her move. They are still not supportive of her.

“If this is your calling, than what does it matter how we feel about it.” – Mom

“Are you going to move even if we don’t give you are blessings?” – Dad

“Yes” – Faith

“Well, then there’s your answer.” – Dad

“I’m leaving on Wednesday” – Faith

“Are you two just going to let her walk out the door? You sit in service every Sunday, but because your daughter is following the voice of God you’re ready to shoot the messenger. I might just have to rethink this whole religious thing. I sit in service every Sunday, I feed the homeless, I help take care of the elderly, but I have never actually heard God’s voice. Not once.” – Faith’s sister

That’s powerful stuff. Are you ready and willing to follow God no matter what? Even if your family doesn’t want you to? Or believe that you heard from God?

Watch the official Steps of Faith trailer…..

After that argument with her parents, Faith meets with her pastor for advice.

“God puts these obstacles in our path so we don’t go around feeling like saints” – pastor

Then she does move. Unfortunately it doesn’t go any smoother for her after arriving at Steps of Faith. They won’t hire her even after she told them that God told her to come work for them.

“This is all a little to cuckoo for me. Check back in 6 months.” – Belle

So she does the only thing that she can do. She goes back every day until they do hire her.

“God told me I that I was supposed to be doing this.” – Faith

“Well He didn’t tell me.” – Belle

“I’ll be back everyday until you hire me. See you tomorrow.” – Faith

Check out this exclusive clip!

And the owner does finally do hire her. To muck out the stalls.

Check out this second exclusive clip. This scene cracks me up. lol

Faith is ok with mucking out the stalls since she does not have a good track record of working with kids. So even though she follows what God told her to do, by moving and getting a job at Steps of Faith, she avoids working with the children there. She finally has no choice but to start, though.

After a child gets almost gets hurt on her watch, Faith gets discouraged and goes home. Her father gives her an encouraging talk that ends with:

“It’s time for you to pick yourself up and go get what God has for you.”     (Very wise advice for anyone.)

Faith does just that. Returning to Steps of Faith, working hard, getting certified in hippo-therapy, and getting married to the owner of Steps of Faith.

The main themes of Steps of Faith, now on DVD, are faith, purpose, and relationships. Even though it’s called a dramedy, there is not a lot of comedy in the movie. There were a couple of scenes that I laughed at, and a few more that made me chuckle. But it’s not a belly laugh comedy.  Starring Charles Malik Whitfield, Chrystee Pharris, Irma P. Hall, it is rated PG. There is no language or violence in the movie. I think the PG rating is because of a couple of kisses, between Faith’s parents, and Faith & Marshall.

I recommend Steps of Faith for the whole family.
