2024 Olympics For Kids

August 6, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This 2024 Olympics For Kids post contains affiliate links

I have always loved the Olympics. I’m not athletic, so it’s not like I could see myself ever participating. lol I’ve just always loved everything about the Olympics. The ceremonies, the events, the personal triumph stories. Just everything. lol

So I always incorporated the Olympics into our homeschool. In fact, we would stop our regular studies and do Olympics studies and activities whenever the Olympics were happening. There are so many subjects, and learning activities that can happen. World history, science, math, statistics, vocabulary, reading & writing. I homeschooled our 6 kids for a total of 27 years. So we experienced learning with the Olympics several times. lol

And perhaps the family favorite. Cooking! I always made several dishes from the host country while the Olympic were on. This year, I get to try my hand at some of French dishes. You know there are some pastries happening here! lol

Another thing we did was try some of the sports for ourselves! It doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment, or expensive.

Play a tennis game as a family, borrow rackets or buy used.

Go swimming at a community pool and time the kids swimming from one end to the other.

Mark out 100 yards (meters) on your street, or visit a local track, and time the kids running.

After you have timed them, compare their times to the times from the same events at the Olympics.

Kids can appreciate how fast the athletes really are when they time themselves doing the same event.

Your kids may find a new sport that they love. And this may inspire them to work towards competing in the Olympics themselves!

I encourage families to use the Olympics, whether you homeschool or not. There is so much learning and fun for the whole family.

Have You Heard of the Magic Yarn Project?

July 17, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This magic yarn post contains affiliate links.

I recently heard about the Magic Yarn Project, and was so excited! You see, my son is a childhood cancer survivor, so I have a soft spot for anything that helps kids battling cancer.

Have you heard about Magic Yarn?

The Magic Yarn Project provides character wigs and beanies to kids who have lost their hair to cancer, and other diseases, for free. Yes, I said for free! The wigs are handcrafted by volunteers, and sent to individual kids and hospitals around the world. You can go on the website, and request a wig for your child.

Look at these awesome wigs that I took a screenshot of from their website? Aren’t they amazing? Kids can choose from over 30 different characters.

There are also many ways to get involved with the Magic Yarn Project. You can either cut yarn to their specifications and send it in to be made into a wig, or you can make a whole wig yourself to send in.

Bedazzling flowers or decorating envelopes are other ways to help.

You can also make a monetary donation, or help raise money to help buy more yarn.

Check the Magic Yarn Project website for more information!

This is the kind of yarn they use for the wigs.

I’m very happy to be able to add this amazing project to my Childhood Cancer Awareness Resources page. Go check it out for more information about childhood cancer, and ways you can help.

The Christian Capitalist Book Review

June 27, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

If you are a regular here, you know that I love reading. So when I saw this book, The Christian Capitalist, I was intrigued. While I am a capitalist, I had never read about, or even really thought about, what being a capitalist and a Christian had to do with each other. The Christian Capitalist is not like any other money self help book you may have read.

About The Christian Capitalist

The Christian Capitalist explores various scriptural references that support twin pillars of Christian belief:

1) working hard to make a productive benefit from talents and materials that God has provided all people

2) giving generously to share those benefits with our neighbors in the name of Jesus Christ.

Through a discussion of Holy Scripture, it analyzes various passages that relate to these concepts of productivity and generosity, along with two thousand years of history discussing the good works of Christians as examples. Ultimately, this book develops a philosophy that is uniquely Christian and capitalist: the Gospel of Hard Work and Generous Giving!

About the Author

Rich Sanders is the founding pastor of Online Home Church in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, which has met weekly online since the pandemic shutdown in March 2020. He earned his Master’s in Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 2015. Rich follows a bi-vocational calling, so he serves in ministry and in business. As the retired President of Southern Health Lawyers, he practiced law for nearly thirty years. He has been named annually to The Best Lawyers in America- Healthcare since 2011, and he is a past president of the Georgia Academy of Healthcare Attorneys.

Rich is the founder of the charitable organization St. Michael’s Mission, Inc., which is a ministry organized to assist and serve active duty and veterans of the armed services. He is a retired volunteer chaplain at the Interfaith Airport Chapel at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and served as its
President of the Board of Directors from 2017 until 2023.

Watch an Interview with the Author of The Christian Capitalist

Endorsement: “As a small business owner, my husband and I have experienced both
success and challenges. The Christian Capitalist reminded me that going to church
isn’t the only way to worship God. By working hard and giving to others, I share the
blessings God has given to me and my family with others.”

Elizabeth Cranston, Esq., Chief Executive Officer, Cana, LLC, Washington, DC.

The Christian Capitalist

The Christian Capitalist features Bible verses to make the point that making money is not evil in itself. God gives us the ability to work. It’s what we do with the money we earn. As Christians, our goal should not be to amass a lot of money. The author explains that we should take care of ourselves, the family we are responsible for, and our future. Then give away a good portion of our money.

There are Bible verses, or explaining the verses, on virtually every page. This was my favorite part. There are no shortage of people telling us what to do with our money. The author emphasizes through Bible verses and stories, that we should do what God wants us to do with the money He lets us earn.

“We cannot serve God and wealth, but we can serve God with our wealth!” – page 98

Go read 1 Timothy 6:17-19. It’s basically the theme of The Christian Capitalist.

On page 152, the author even covers how one should react when we give a gift to someone that does not appreciate it. It’s not referring to a present that we give someone for an occasion, but something that we give to someone as a blessing.

The Content

The Christian Capitalist is divided into 4 parts.

Working and Giving as Children of God

Jesus Teaches a new Way to Think about Working and Giving

Early Christian Life of Work and Giving

The Christian Capitalist

I love that the author also included a lot of Christian history in this book. We learn about the early Christian’s attempt at communal living. Also, there is a chapter entitled “The Reformation and Modern Views on Working and Giving.”

The title of the last chapter in the book sums it all up. The Christian Capitalist Ethic: The More We Make, The More We Give.

Don’t finish reading at the last chapter, though! Take the time to read:

Appendix A: The Christian Capitalist Ethic – where you will see the authors 10 principles of being a Christian Capitalist.

Appendix B: Additional Stories of Christian Work and Giving is not to be missed

Also included are the Bibliography, the Endnotes, and a Biblical Verse Index. With over 5 pages of Bible verses that were used in this book.

Book Review

I loved reading The Christian Capitalist, and learned a lot. Reading about how the early Christians handled work and giving was very interesting. As well as how Christians have changed their views of money over the years. Including what the Reformationists had to say about money and giving.

My favorite part was that the author used a lot of Bible verses to make his case. It’s not just his opinion.

My husband and I are regular givers, but now I am inspired to keep my eyes open for opportunities to give to those around us in our community, our neighbors, not just churches or organizations.

I highly recommend that you read The Christian Capitalist. In fact, I believe that you will benefit from this book no matter where you are in life, or your finances.

The Firing Squad Movie Review

June 15, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I’m always ready to watch a good faith based movie. So I was glad to hear about a new movie with an incredible story. The Firing Squad is inspired by the true story from 2015 of three Christians who face execution by firing squad in a third world country.

About The Movie

The Firing Squad is a faith based, biographical drama that is rated PG-13 for brief violence, thematic elements, and drug references. Parents: While they don’t actually show anyone getting shot, You see them firing the quns, and know they were shot. They do show a couple of the men laying on the ground with a trickle of blood coming out of their mouths. They do not show any wounds.

The movie stars James Barrington, Kevin Sorbo (“God’s Not Dead”, “Let There Be Light”), and Cuba Gooding, Jr. and is directed by Timothy Chey (Freedom, David and Goliath, and more!)

The filmmakers have been supported by Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru), Calvary Chapel, Pastor Greg Laurie, NACC, Baptist Press, Christian Cinema, NRB, Kay Arthur, Precept Ministries, The Christian Post, The Fish Radio, Rebecca St. James, Family Christian, Lifeway Christian Resources, Talbot Seminary, Biola University, Dallas Theological Seminary, Baptist News, Daystar TV, Evangelical Press Assn, Life Surge, et al.

The Firing Squad is also supported by the Marketing Teams behind The Passion of the Christ, Son of God, and Sound of Freedom.

We have a chance to invest in this movie, too! Visit the website to find out how!

Watch the Trailer

“They faced death. And chose life.”

The Firing Squad Movie Review

I don’t recall hearing about this story at the time it happened. Either I missed it, or the news didn’t cover it. So I didn’t know anything about the story.

The movie starts with 2 of the men who are dealing drugs, and planning a big deal. They planned every detail, including how to hide the drugs from inspectors. I found The Firing Squad did a great job of conveying the men before their arrests.

However, they did not make it through security. They were caught in the airport in Indonesia, and sent straight to prison. There was a strict, no drugs policy. So their appeal was turned down.

The story follows them during their short stay in prison. The were not Christians before going to prison, and were not too receptive to the other prisoners telling them about Jesus. When they finally agreed to go to an inmate led church service, they accepted Jesus.

But that’s not the end of the story!

The peace they found made a discernable difference in the men. Then they went on to lead others to Christ. Including someone that you thought never would! There is another surprising part of The Firing Squad storyline. A love story! You would not expect a love story to take place in a foreign prison with inmates scheduled to die. But there is!

The Firing Squad is not like any faith based movie I’ve seen before. In that it deals with the few days leading up to the death of the prisoners’. I loved this movie because of how good a job they did with portraying how much peace the men had after accepting Jesus. I highly recommend you go see The Firing Squad!

Be sure to watch the credits! You’ll find out more about their campaign for Jesus. There goal is to win 1,000,000 souls for Jesus!

Here’s my favorite quote from from that.

“Listen, We all face some kind of firing squad in our lives and yet with faith in the Lord that challenge can lead us to true peace in this insane world.”

Make Plans Now!

The Firing Squad will be in theatres nationwide August 2!

Also on their site you can find free screenings of the movie in cities across the US.

For more information, visit the The Firing Squad website.
