The Garden Within Book Review

September 18, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

In the new book, The Garden Within, trauma therapist and mental health expert Dr. Anita Phillips reveals how embracing emotion is the key to living your most powerful life. Just as gardens thrive in good ground, the abundant life you’ve been seeking can only be grown in the soil of your heart.

About the book….

Too often we’ve been taught to view our emotions with suspicion, seeing them as something to be suppressed, managed, or mastered. This isn’t true. Emotions are not your enemy. Internal war is not your destiny. You were created to flourish.

In this game-changing book, trauma therapist and mental health expert Dr. Anita Phillips reveals how embracing emotion is the key to living your most powerful life. Just as gardens thrive in good ground, the abundant life you’ve been seeking can only be grown in the soil of your heart.

Blending faith, the latest discoveries in neurobiology, and her own research and work as a licensed therapist, Dr. Anita shows you how to cultivate a state of emotional well-being that can: strengthen your body and reverse the effects of trauma, calm anxiety and renew your mind, unleash a new level of spiritual power in your life.

Dr. Anita Phillips is a trauma therapist, life coach, and minister. Widely recognized as a thought leader at the intersection of mental health, faith, and culture, Dr. Anita holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Regent University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Garden Within was featured on Super Soul Podcast hosted by Oprah Winfrey. Other book features include Oprah Daily, Red Table Talk, Essence, Tamron Hall, Woman Evolve, Proverbs 31, the Today Show, Instant New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller.

This book will equip you with the tools you need to nurture a part of yourself that has been misunderstood for too long — your heart — setting you free to live just as the Creator intended.

Watch the Book Trailer

How many times have we heard, “Don’t be ruled by your emotions?” “Don’t trust your emotions?”

But that’s not true. Our emotions are not our enemy! Dr. Phillips shows us how we can embrace our emotions. We don’t have to constantly have an internal war. We can flourish just like the plants in the garden.

The Garden Within is divided into 3 parts. Soil Power, Deeply Rooted. and The Embodied Garden.

The Garden Within Book Review

In Soil Power, we learn that no emotion is a sin. We need to learn how to get rid of the lies that we have believed about emotions. Another important part of this section is seeing how Scripture defines well-being. We learn that while knowing Jesus guarantees our salvation, but it doesn’t guarantee our emotional health.

Then in Deeply Rooted, we learn how to care for our garden. An emotion is the impact a situation has on our body and brain. Researchers have found that emotion is a bodily experience. I think this is the first place that I have read that. And how those emotions can later cause an autonomic response. This section really explains a lot of how our body, brain, and emotions work.

Book Review

In the final section, The Embodied Garden, we learn about our heart-body relationship. How our emotional health can influence our physical health. I love this illustration showing how everything is connected in the human body.

Here’s what stuck out to me the most from this section.

” Your heart contains the holy of holies in the temple that Scripture says your body is.”

This section also discusses how to heal the broken heart from loneliness and grief. Learning how to overcome anger and fear are also discussed in this section.

In the chapter Tending Your Embodied Garden we learn how self care is important to our emotional well being.

I learned a lot from this book. If you have had any kind of trauma or any kind of strong emotions – i.e. anxiety or fear, The Garden Within will be a great help to you. Even if you haven’t had any kind of trauma, we all have emotions that we need to overcome so we can live life abundantly.

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust Movie Review

September 11, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust is the 5th movie in the film franchise. Even though it’s part of a series of movies, it is a stand alone movie.

In this new movie, Reverend David Hill, amid political and spiritual turmoil, steps up to run for Congress after an incumbent’s sudden death. Battling against Peter Kane, who aims to erase religion from policy, David’s fight becomes a beacon of hope and optimism for people seeking moral leadership in a divided world.

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust Movie Review

The story starts with a pastor having to tell a mother carrying her little baby that the women’s center has been shut down, and they can no longer offer any help. He was not happy about it either. So when the opportunity presented itself for him to have a platform to make a difference in peoples lives, he took it.

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust Movie Review

The film is engaging with a captivating story that keeps the whole family entertained. God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust allows families and friends to discuss how to engage in this current political climate with courage. Most importantly, this film demonstrates that Christians should be optimistic, excited, and hopeful about the future.

Watch the Movie Trailer!

The cast of God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust is phenomenal! David A.R. White (God’s Not Dead), Dean Cain (Adventures of Lois & Clark), Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy), Scott Baio (Happy Days), Samaire Armstrong (The O.C.), Charlene Tilton (Dallas), and Ray Wise (RoboCop) with guest appearances by Governor Mike Huckabee, Raymond Arroyo and Newsboys. Of course, music by the Newsboys is always great.

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust Movie Review

This interview with Samaire Armstrong is a must watch!

I loved this movie! The storyline, the cast, the message, all of it. The writing is amazing.

When told to talk a little bit less about God and little bit more on the dirt on his opponent, he said it was useless to fight dark with dark. “Repay no one evil for evil but give thought to do what is honorable.”

“You don’t win unless you play by their rules.” “I’ve already lost if I do.”

“If you know it’s God’s voice, why wouldn’t you listen?”

“God gave you a voice. God gave you a vote.”

There are too many great moments, and quotes to share!

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust Movie Review

The political discussion and debates in this movie are discussions currently happening this election year. They will inspire you to get out, use your voice and vote!

I highly recommend God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust for the whole family. There is nothing in it that kids can’t see.

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust Movie Review

This film is uplifting and relevant just like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was 85
years ago in that Pastor Dave approaches politics with moral courage, loves his
country, stands up to corruption, and represents the principles that made America
great and continue to make America great.

The New White Bird Movie

August 27, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The new White Bird movie is a beautiful, family-friendly story of courage. From the best-selling author of Wonder, the book that sparked a movement to “choose kind,” comes the inspirational next chapter.

The New White Bird Movie

In White Bird, we follow Julian (Bryce Gheisar), who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger. They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) risks everything to keep her safe. From director Marc Forster (Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin), screenwriter Mark Bomback, and based on R.J. Palacio’s book, WHITE BIRD, like Wonder before it, is an uplifting movie about how one act of kindness can live on forever.

Watch the Movie Trailer!

I love this storyline, and am looking forward to see Helen Mirren in this movie. White Bird will be releasing in theaters on October 4th.

Average Joe – A new Movie!

August 20, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I remember when this happened, and was in the news. You know how I love faith based movies. I’m looking forward to seeing the new movie Average Joe!

Watch the trailer to see why!

Average Joe A New Movie!

Synopsis:
High school football coach Joe Kennedy had no other choice but to fight. A childhood in foster care followed by 20 years in the Marine Corps was nothing compared to his biggest battle: his commitment to stand for God publicly by taking a knee in prayer after each game. When he was fired, Joe and his wife Denise knew this battle for religious freedom, freedom of speech, and the rights of all Americans was one they would have to fight—no matter the cost. From the director and producers of God’s Not Dead and the producers of The Blind comes Average Joe, in theaters beginning October 11.

2024 Olympics For Kids

August 6, 2024 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This 2024 Olympics For Kids post contains affiliate links

I have always loved the Olympics. I’m not athletic, so it’s not like I could see myself ever participating. lol I’ve just always loved everything about the Olympics. The ceremonies, the events, the personal triumph stories. Just everything. lol

So I always incorporated the Olympics into our homeschool. In fact, we would stop our regular studies and do Olympics studies and activities whenever the Olympics were happening. There are so many subjects, and learning activities that can happen. World history, science, math, statistics, vocabulary, reading & writing. I homeschooled our 6 kids for a total of 27 years. So we experienced learning with the Olympics several times. lol

And perhaps the family favorite. Cooking! I always made several dishes from the host country while the Olympic were on. This year, I get to try my hand at some of French dishes. You know there are some pastries happening here! lol

This is the unit study I used the most: Olympics: History, Geography, & Sports.

Here’s an Olympics Coloring Book to keep them busy while you watch your favorite events. lol

Olympics Goats: The Greatest Athletes of All Time

More Olympics For Kids Fun

Another thing we did was try some of the sports for ourselves! It doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment, or expensive.

Play a tennis game as a family, borrow rackets or buy used.

Go swimming at a community pool and time the kids swimming from one end to the other.

Mark out 100 yards (meters) on your street, or visit a local track, and time the kids running.

After you have timed them, compare their times to the times from the same events at the Olympics.

Kids can appreciate how fast the athletes really are when they time themselves doing the same event.

Your kids may find a new sport that they love. And this may inspire them to work towards competing in the Olympics themselves!

I encourage families to use the Olympics, whether you homeschool or not. There is so much learning and fun for the whole family.
