April 4, 2014 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The Queen’s Handmaid starts in 39 BC and tells the story of Lydia, who was abandoned at birth and raised as a servant in Cleopatra’s palace in Alexandria, Egypt. Lydia is a hard worker in the palace, as well as making clay pots in her “free” time. She sells these pots and saves the money so she can live free one day. As  hard as she works at her tasks, Lydia works just as hard to not get attached to anyone. She has lost so many people in her life, that she is afraid to get close to anyone, for fear of losing them, too.

The A-Z of C.S. Lewis Book Review

February 21, 2014 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I recently received a copy of the new book The A-Z of C.S. Lewis to review.

The A-Z of C.S. Lewis, An Encycolpedia of His Life, Thoughts and Writings

Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of C. S. Lewis’s death, this complete guide covers all of Lewis’ works, from his literary criticism to Narnia.
C. S. Lewis’s work is widely known and regarded, but enthusiasts are often only aware of one part of his work-his children’s stories and his popular theology; and yet he wrote so much more, including science fiction and literary criticism. This volume brings together all aspects of C S Lewis’s life and thought. Arranged in alphabetical order, it begins with The Abolition of Man-written in 1943 and described as “almost my favorite”-to Wormwood, a character in The Screwtape Letters. This book will delight anyone who is interested in C. S. Lewis and wants to learn more about him, his thought, his works, and his life.

About the Author:

Colin Duriez was for many years a commissioning editor at Inter-Varsity Press UK. He has subsequently appeared as a commentator on DVDs of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, and BBC television’s The Worlds of Fantasy. He is also the author of The Inklings Handbook (with the late David Porter), J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis: The Story of Their Friendship, and Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings, and has contributed to definitive reference works relating to Tolkien such as The Tolkien Encyclopedia (Routledge).

My The A-Z of C.S. Lewis Book Review:

The A-Z of C.S. Lewis by Colin Curiez is a comprehensive book of everything C.S. Lewis. It’s not just a book to read, it’s written in encyclopedia format. The book is over 350 pages. It covers everything about C.S. Lewis. From his life, marriage, and friends to his career, writings, and everything in between.

Also included in the encyclopedia like entries are references and content of his books. The Narnia books are heavily represented, with entries for characters, worlds, and vocabulary.

This book is for you if you are reading  Narnia or one of his other books for school, or want to learn more about this Narnia everyone is talking about. If your a C.S. Lewis fan in general, you will love this book. I love the ease of finding information. Now when my son asks me a Narnia question, as he often does, lol, I will be able to quickly and easily find an answer for him. And we both will be happy.

The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is an excellent reference book for all ages.

Where Courage Calls Book Review & iPad Mini Giveaway

February 21, 2014 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I recently received the book Where Courage Calls by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan to review. Where Courage Calls is a When Calls the Heart Novel, and is a special companion story to Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart TV series. I haven’t seen the tv series, or read When Calls the Heart. That’s ok.  Where Courage Calls can stand on it’s own, too.
Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father’s wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.

But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she’d feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don’t even speak English. There isn’t even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth’s heart is torn between two young men—both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.

Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she’s had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

My Where Courage Calls Review:

Beth, who has been sick since childhood, feels called to move to western Canada to take a teaching position. She was not prepared for what she had to face. She had never seen such need, in the people and in the town.

After the initial adjustment period, from her families wealth to a poor mining town, Beth is determined to work hard and make a difference in the children’s lives. Beth works through sickness, hardship, homesickness, and bad conditions to teach the children. She also starts English classes for locals who don’t speak it. Through it all, Beth can see God’s hand in taking care of her, and the people in the town. Beth learns that she is stronger than her family thought. Even stronger that she thought she was.

Where Courage Calls is a great read. If you’ve loved Janette Oke’s books in the past, you’ll love this one, too. It’s made even more special since she co-wrote it with her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan. The characters in the book are from all walks of live, and all ages. It’s easy to find someone in the book to identify with.

The ending of Where Courage Calls leaves the story wide open for another book. I look forward to reading any future books in this series.

Janette Oke’s newest book, Where Courage Calls (co-written with her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan), is receiving rave reviews. It is the companion story to Hallmark Channel’s TV series When Calls the Heart, set in the Canadian west.

Save Money on College with Campus Book Rentals

February 13, 2014 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This is a sponsored post.

Going to college is very expensive. While, so far, none of my children have opted to attend college, I have nieces and nephews in college. Even if they receive scholarships and grants, most students have to work while attending college. Since their time and money is limited, renting books online can make a huge difference for them.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
