Our Homeschool Week in Review

August 3, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

It was back to school week for us! Our week started on Sunday, no not for school work, for Zach’s 13 birthday! Yes, I have FOUR teenagers in the house now.  My new joke is, “I have four teenagers, and the twitch is hardly noticeable.” lol

Zach got a new bike for his birthday, so PE this week consisted of lots of bike rides.

Monday was our first day of school for the 2013-2014 school year. Abby started 9th grade, and Zach started 7th grade. It feels odd to only have two students…. We started the morning off with individual Bible study. Then we had some fun.

We celebrated the first day of school by going to the movies. The homeschool group had a movie day scheduled. We saw Turbo. I thought it was going to be stupid, but it ended up being good.

Tuesday, we hit the books. On Friday, Abby had  a lab about water surface tension. She had to see how many drops of water would fit on a penny before it flowed off the penny. A very easy lab. I know they won’t be this easy later in the year, but for now, I’ll take it. lol

We had a great first week! To celebrate, I’m having a giveaway! Stop by and enter my Back to Homeschool $10 Amazon.com Gift Card Giveaway!

And that’s our homeschool week in review! If you missed these reviews that I posted during the month of July, stop by and check them out:

Our Homeschool Week in Review

July 5, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Well, it’s been pretty quiet here since last weeks double homeschool high school graduation. Our older two children had separate graduations. While a double graduation was special, I’m glad our younger two children will have separate graduations. It’s much easier to make sure that their graduation is what they want it to be if there is only one graduate. There was quite a bit of negotiations required for a double graduation

Abigail finished her assigned work, and is now on vacation for the month of July. Zachary is the lone student now. He is continuing with math all summer, due to his own actions. Or shall I say non-actions. He is also working on two reviews for The Schoolhouse Review Crew. One is a computer learning game called Mayan Adventures. That review is coming next week. This week, he started working on a history curriculum called America the Beautiful. So far, we both are really liking it. Since I’m talking about reviews, I have a review going up soon for a cursive handwriting practice, that also teaches the kids how to make illuminations. Abby finished that one before she went on vacation.

America the Beautiful

Since we’re not doing a lot of schoolwork for the month of July, this will be the last Our Homeschool Week in Review until August. I plan on writing some homeschool posts during that time, so make sure you follow Linda’s Lunacy in some way so you don’t miss anything.  🙂

I also wanted to share my current giveaway for TWO Schoolhouse Planners. These truly are the best planners I’ve ever used.

And just for fun, I’m participating in the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop again this year. All the giveaways are book related. I’m giving away a $15. Amazon Gift Card so the winner can purchase a book they’ve been wanting. Head over and enter! You can always use the $15 to buy a book or supplies for your homeschool.  🙂

Our Homeschool Week in Review – Graduation!

June 30, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We had a double homeschool high school graduation! Our older two homeschool graduates had separate graduations. so having a double graduation was fun!

Our Homeschool Week in Review – Graduation!

My husband gave Calen, 18, his diploma first.

Next came Hannah, 17.

The two new graduates together. They are only 13 months apart in age, and are our two middle children.

They didn’t want to wear gowns, but both wanted to wear the caps. I tried to get Calen to dress for the occasion. sigh….. He insisted he wanted to wear a tshirt.

Hannah made her dress herself. Including designing, making the pattern, and sewing. If you look closely, you can see the detail at the bottom of the dress. She also put in a side zipper. It came out great, like all her projects, and it’s a very pretty summer dress.

We had their graduation on Sunday after church, so we  ate lunch first.

The graduates had a great day, and are so happy to be done with high school! I know, because they keep telling everyone that. lol They are still working on their plans for the future.

I hope and pray that they seek God’s will, and follow the plan that HE has for their lives.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

June 22, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

So many exciting things happening here. We’re planning a double graduation for Sunday. I’m not sure if having a double graduation versus two separate graduations is a time saver or not. True, I only have to do all the work once. However, I have spent quite a bit of time negotiating with the graduates to make sure that they both have what they want at their graduation.

Hannah has been busy making herself a new dress for graduation. It’s coming along quickly, and will come out great, I’m sure.  🙂

I’m busy planning the decorations, the food, the diplomas etc. These little guys are part of our decorations.  The Smiley Face talks, too. lol

Abby has finished all her work except Write with World.  When she finishes that, she’ll be on summer break except for any review items that come up. After summer break, she’ll be ready for high school!

Zach has almost finished his geography course. He’s been using Memoria Press Geography 1, linked to my review. When he’s finished with that, all he has left is math. He will be doing math all summer, and any review items that come up that I need him for.

It’s been very quiet this week. With Calen and Hannah finished with their school work, Abby down to one subject and Zach down to two subjects.

I didn’t know what to do with all that free time. Oh yes, I cleaned house! lol Guess it wasn’t free time after all! lol

Next week, I’ll have graduation pictures!!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

June 15, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This week has been spent preparing for graduation! Calen and Hannah will both be graduating. Graduation is scheduled for June 29th. They only want family at the actual graduation. Hannah wants a party, but Calen doesn’t. Trying to coordinate two graduates wants in one graduation is…..interesting. lol

Neither one of them wants to wear a robe, but they both want to wear caps. They were delivered this week. I think I was as excited about it as they were. Actually, I think I was more excited. lol

There diplomas were delivered this week, also. I bought these from HSLDA. That’s were I bought my older two diplomas at, so they all match. That’s more for me, then for them.

I also bought each of them this really fun Class of 2013 t-shirt from HSLDA. The 13 on the back takes up the whole back of the shirt, and inside the numbers are the class superlatives. Most Popular, Most Likely to Succeed, etc. Very funny, since homeschool high graduates are often a class of one.

Hannah has finished all her work, and Calen just has to finish Geometry. It looks like he will finish by the end of next week. If that’s the case, we will move up graduation. Since it will just be a few family members, it will be easy to move. Hannah will still have her party on the 29th, regardless of when graduation takes place.

Abby and Zach are still working on their schoolwork. They have to get a certain amount done before they can take a break. I’m not a big fan of summer breaks, anyway. So this doesn’t bother me at all. They won’t be getting more than four weeks off, if that much.

It’s going to feel really strange with only two students. I haven’t had only two students since Calen was born in 1998!

Our Homeschool Week in Review next week may graduation pictures!

I also posted a review of two eBooks from Christianity Cove.

Thinking About Homeschooling? The First 5 Steps

June 12, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We’ve homeschooled all 6 of our children from the very beginning. We started with Kindergarten with our oldest in 1991, and finished when our youngest graduated in 2019 That’s a long time! I thought I’d share what I think to be the first steps to take when you are thinking about homeschooling.

Thinking About Homeschooling First 5 Steps

Thinking About Homeschooling? The First 5 Steps

1. Decide why you want to homeschool and what you want out of it.

Religious reasons? Special Needs? Want your child to graduate college by 18? It is very important to decide the whys behind your wanting to homeschool because they will influence the rest of your homeschool choices.

2. Find out the homeschool laws for your state.

These are easily found online. Every state has a homeschool organization, some more than one, that you can turn to for more information.

3. Join Homeschool Legal Defense Association

We have been members since we started homeschooling. I think the membership fee is worth it. You can also find your state homeschooling laws on their website, as well as much more information. I ordered our high school diplomas from them. They sell many things in their shop, including books. Members receive a discount in the store, as well as other perks.

4. Start looking at curriculum.

Your reasons for homeschooling will help you decide on curriculum. Even with that, choosing a curriculum can be overwhelming. There are just so many choices. Start with looking at what others are using, either at a homeschool convention or with other homeschoolers. Homeschoolers are usually very friendly. If you connect with a local group, chances are some of them will use the curriculum your thinking about using and will let you come and look at it.

5. Relax

Starting to homeschool can feel so overwhelming at times. Even those that have homeschooled for years can feel very overwhelmed at times. When you start to get that suffocating feeling, remember why you started homeschooling in the first place. Then relax and have fun with your kids. Laugh with them.

If your thinking about homeschooling know that homeschooling works, and it can work for your family, too.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

June 1, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I was going through some craft stuff that was given to us (several years ag0) to get rid of what we’re never going to us. Zach came in and saw this little wooden train. He snagged it and went running. I guess before I said he couldn’t have it. lol He painted it, and gave it to his grandfather for his birthday.

And I’m sorry to say that’s the only picture I have to share this week. Apparently, I need to take more pictures. The thing is, we’ve been working hard on book work. How many pictures can I share of my kids sitting with a book?  I’ve even got kids dragging their feet. Which would only make a good picture if I posed them dragging their feet. lol

Zach lost his math notebook. So now he has to go back and do lessons that he already did. When one has to do the work over again, one quickly learns to keep track of ones notebook.

Abby is finishing up her 8th grade subjects. She only has math and writing left. This week, I started her on her 9th grade math. It’s for a Schoolhouse Review Crew review, so I’m having her start it now. I’ve never used this curriculum before. It’s looking promising.

Hannah only has one subject left to finish so she can graduate! She needs to finish Kentucky State History. I use Switched on Schoolhouse State History.

Calen has two subjects left to finish so he can graduate! He needs to finish World Literature (Abeka) and Geometry (Khan Academy).  I estimate he will be done in another month.

I’ve been talking to Calen and Hannah about what they want to do If they are graduating within a few weeks of each other, I asked them if they wanted to have a double graduation and party, or if they want separate graduations and parties. They can’t decide! lol  So, I guess we’ll just have to wait until the first one finishes their work to see what they want to do.

There is no other exciting news here. Just book work and more book work! I will try to do better about taking pictures this week. lol
