Homemade BBQ Sauce

July 11, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy 11 Comments

Store bought BBQ sauce is full of high fructose corn syrup so I wanted to make my own to avoid it. Really, all store bought condiments are mostly HFCS nowadays. Unless you pay a very high price for HFCS free condiments at health food stores, it’s hard to avoid. I’ve been experimenting with making my own BBQ sauce. I’m moving to salad dressings next. 🙂  If you like a less sweet bbq sauce, you can cut down on the brown sugar.

Homemade BBQ Sauce

2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
10 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/2 tablespoon pepper
1/2 tablespoon onion powder
1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer to 30 minutes to 1 hour.

This sounds delicious! It’s something like the BBQ sauce I made up on a whim for the same reason — HFCS. Mine has honey rather than maple syrup, and I add in a little balsamic vinegar for that tart/sweet flavor, along with the cider vinegar.

    Thanks for sharing!

Rena, I have used it after it’s been in the fridge a week and it’s been fine. Beyond that, I don’t know. My family doesn’t leave it around long. lol I usually make a big batch and freeze it. It freezes great.
