Multiple Myeloma

Multiple Myeloma can affect anyone. Keep reading for more information about this rare blood cancer.

March is Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month
A Rare Cancer that affects Hispanics
Over the past ten years, the prognosis for multiple myeloma (MM), a rare blood cancer that previously was considered a short death sentence, has been changed into a manageable condition with the life expectancy doubling to more than seven years post diagnosis.

MM can cause a number of serious health problems affecting the bones, immune system, kidneys and an individual’s red blood cell count, with some of the more common symptoms including bone pain and fatigue, a sign of anemia.

Each year, nearly 22,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with MM and still with no cure for the disease, more than 10,000 patients will die. As such, it’s important to make Hispanics aware of this rare cancer. Every year, there are 11.8 new MM cases per 100,000 Hispanic American persons, and 5.8 deaths resulting from MM per 100,000 Hispanic Americans.

A 2012 comparative analysis of outcome disparities among MM patients found Hispanics had the youngest median age at diagnosis (65 years) and the worst median overall survival (2-4 years) compared to other ethnicities.

Further, several studies have found that being overweight or obese increases a person’s risk of developing MM. More than three out of four (78.8%) Hispanic Americans are considered overweight or obese.

Learning more about MM is important, as people can live a satisfying life with MM. Remember, March is Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month so tell a friend!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
