The Heiress of Winterwood | Enter to win a “Downton Abbey” Kindle Fire Prize Pack from @SarahLaddAuthor

April 29, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I recently received the book The Heiress of Winterwood by Sarah E. Ladd to review.

The Heiress of Winterwood tells the story of Amelia Barrett, a young woman whose parents have died. Her uncle and his family live with her on her estate, and mange everything for her. It is 1814 in England, and Amelia has no say in the management of her estate, or her life.  Amelia must marry by the time is is 24, or she will lose the entire estate left to her by her parents. Her uncle has arranged a marriage for her, that would benefit himself more than Amelia.

The Heiress of Winterwood

Amelia had brought a friend to her home, who eventually gave birth to a little girl. On her death bed, the friend asks Amelia to take care of her little girl. Amelia promises that no matter what, she’ll take care of the baby. Amelia’s finance, however, has told Amelia that when they wed, the baby must leave. Amelia is torn by doing what her family expects of her, and keeping her promise. When the baby’s father, a sea captain, returns, Amelia proposes marriage as a way to keep the baby with her. Before this marriage can take place, the baby vanishes. While tracking down the baby, Amelia and the baby’s father are also put in danger.

This book grabbed my attention at the very beginning of the story, and held my attention until the very end. There is a lot of action, adventure, and intrigue, as well as romance and tender family moments. The Heiress of Winterwood is a great read about love, family, and putting your trust in God even in the worst of the storms in life.

Sarah Ladd is celebrating the release of The Heiress of Winterwood with a Downton Abbey Kindle Prize Pack Giveaway!

In the Kitchen with Linda – Dinner Menu & more!

April 29, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The most exciting thing that happened in my kitchen this week was getting an under-sink water filter system. Isn’t it pretty?

Well, that’s the visible part, the rest is under the sink. We’ve been using a water filter pitcher. For a family of our size, that means that the pitcher is always empty when you want a drink. lol This new filter and faucet has been so much more convenient. I’m loving it!

In other kitchen happenings, on Saturday night I remember at 9:30 pm that I had to have 10 pounds of mashed potatoes ready to leave the house at 9:30 am the next morning. Fail. I got my 17 year old daughter to help me peel the potatoes, and I got them done that night. phew. Now I have to make 5 pounds of mashed potatoes today for a dinner at church tonight. I think we need to come up with something less time consuming to sign up to bring. lol

I wanted to tell you about a great site I found, Celebrate Women Today. They feature numerous reviews of food, household items, health and beauty products.

Now…. to answer the question that I get asked about a hundred times a day……….

What’s For Dinner?

Saturday on the Farm

The Lilacs are blooming! The Lilacs are blooming! I tried hard and just kept myself to sharing one picture. I love Lilacs!

lilac

The bushes that are blooming are right by our back porch stairs. In this picture below, you can see the top of the railing, the Lilacs, then in the back, a Red Bud Tree, a Dogwood tree, with the raised bed in between. Then another bed on the other side of the Dogwood Tree. It’s kind of hard to see, but between where the green grass ends, and the half dirt banking in the back is the creek. It’s several feet down in this part of the yard, but it’s there.

I have been standing on the stairs just so I can smell the Lilacs. lol

Here’s a picture of the bed in the right of the above picture. I just added this last year. It contains Hostas, Iris’s, Wild Roses, and an assortment of weeds. haha It also holds my latest project. I took an old wagon that was hanging around the yard, it doesn’t even have any wheels on it, and added several cans that I spray painted white. I planted flower seeds in the cans.

I love the Dogwood flowers, too, so pretty.

In the herb bed that extends from where the Lilacs are, I planted two Lavender plants. yes, I bought them. I have not had any success growing Lavender from seed, I’ve been trying for years. So I finally gave in and bought some. I’d love to have a whole garden full of Lavender.

lavender

In the raised bed, in the above picture, I have Spinach and Lettuce planted. They are growing good.! Here’s the Spinach.

spinach

And the Lettuce. Won’t be too much longer, and I’ll be eating it. yum!

lettuce

When I bought the Lilacs, my husband was looking around and found this plant that he liked. It’s a Catmint. Butterflies love Catmint, so it should be a great addition to the front yard.

catmint

I have found out that cats love Catmint. should be interesting to see what my cats do with it. Hopefully, they leave it for the butterflies. I also found out that you can brew Catmint tea. I’ll have to dig deeper to see if it has any medicinal properties. You can divide Catmint in the spring, and the plant will put up suckers. From what I’ve read, it spreads easily and quickly like other mints. So be careful where you plant it! I have it in the front yard in a flower bed between two Butterfly Bushes. It’s the only flower in the bed that’s somewhere around 20 feet long. I’ll be planting annuals in it this year, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing if the Catmint took over the whole bed. Just think of all the butterflies we’d have!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

April 26, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Sickness has struck our house. Again. It’s just a cold, but it’s a bad cold. sigh. I was so hoping that spring would bring an end to the colds. The 12 old has been sick all week, and my husband and I have had it for a couple of days now. It’s not fun.

Anyway, on to the homeschool stuff. Zach didn’t get any work done because he felt so bad.  The other three are working right along. Hannah and Abby were the most diligent this week. Calen is dragging his feet. I’m not sure why, because as soon as he finishes the subjects he’s working on, he graduates. I have to work with him this week to come up with a plan for finishing and graduation.

On Tuesday, Calen and Abby went with some of the youth from church to the Ronald McDonald house in our state to cook supper for the families. Here’s a group shot, minus the one taking the picture, and the girl that didn’t want her picture taken. My two are the ones without their faces blurred. lol Wait, except for the red head, he’s not mine!

Here’s Calen and one of the adults from church cooking. They made spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and brownies.

This is the third time that our youth group has gone, but the first time any of my kids went. It was a very good experience for them. Here’s Abby and one of the girls from church.

Our church also had revival services this week. So that kept us busy in the evenings, for those that were well enough to go.

Hopefully, no one else comes down with this cold so we can get back to work on Monday. It looks like it’s going to be a fairly quiet week so we should be able to get lots of schoolwork done.

That’s our homeschool week in review!

Ephesians:Discovering Your Identity & Purpose for Christ

April 25, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I recently received Ephesians: Discovering Your Identity and Purpose in Christ to review. Bible study is an important part of being a Christian. Women have so much on their plates now, work, kids – and all their activities, and church, to name a few. All this busyness can lead to burnout. Women need Bible study to keep balanced, focused and Christ-centered. It can be difficult to set aside the time needed for an in-depth Bible study.

The Discover Together studies offer tiered questions to allow readers to choose a depth of study that fits with their individual lifestyles or schedules, even if they vary by the week, month or season. I really loved that about this study. You get to choose how many questions you answer according to how deep you want to study, and how much time you have.

This Ephesians study uses the example of Paul’s church in Ephesus to show readers how they can be victorious Christians, living in God’s Word, and free from sin. Part of the discovery series, the Ephesians  study includes tips for either individual or group use, inspirational sidebars and short, 3-5 minute teaching videos. Scan the video QR code in the book with a smart phone or visit the series website to watch Sue provide historical and cultural background, teach important truths found in each week’s lesson, or ask thoughtful questions to encourage deeper discussion.

I don’t have a smart phone, but I loved that this book contains QR codes that can be scanned. How convenient for busy women to be able to take the book with them when they are away from home and still have access to the videos on their phones.

Join the online Bible study here. Just LIKE the page and then follow along. There will be a launch party for Ephesians on April 11th and the online Bible study will begin the following week on April 15th.

Women crave Bible studies that challenge them to grow in their faith. But after balancing carpools, sports schedules, or work deadlines, you may not be able to commit to another evening out of the house. Now you don’t have to.
Whether studying with a small group or by yourself, you know can join popular Bible teacher Sue Edwards on the Year of Discovery. Sue will be leading women through her studies with online chats and discussions on her Facebook page. All year long. Every week. Any time of day. From the comfort of home. Make-up and hair-do optional. Come as you are!
Each week you will find quotes, links to articles and other resources, and videos to help you as you study. Complete the lessons at your convenience. Then visitFacebook.com/DiscoverTogetherSeries any time of day to comment or ask questions. Sue will be there frequently to respond, encourage, and equip!

EphesiansBibleStudybuttonBetween April 15 – June 17 Sue Edwards will be posting weekly on the Year of Discovery Facebook Page and interacting with groups and individuals around the country going through the study at the same time. Women will be able to discuss the study with each other and ask questions via Facebook.
Completing each lesson requires about one-and-a-half hours. Readers still receive in-depth Bible study but with a minimum time commitment. For those who desire a more thorough study, including an opportunity to learn more about the history, culture and geography related to the Bible, Edwards has provided “Digging Deeper” questions. Answering these questions may require outside resources such as an atlas, Bible dictionary or concordance and challenge readers to examine complex theological issues and differing views more closely.

In the Kitchen with Linda

April 22, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I was able to get in the kitchen and cook something besides meals. Well, I did eat some of the gluten free corn bread muffins I made with my supper one night. I put a big container of these in the freezer for me to eat later. 🙂 Here’s the recipe I used. Whole Wheat Sweet Cornbread. To make gluten free, I use 1/2 cup all purpose gluten free flour and 1/2 cup oat flour in place of the 1 cup whole wheat flour. I have also used 1 cup of the all purpose gluten free flour. I like the texture and nutrition better with using the oat flour. Next time, I want to try using all oat flour.

gluten free corn bread muffins

I canned quite a few jars of beans a few months ago, and I have enjoyed the convenience of just opening a jar. yes, I know you can buy canned beans in the store. lol It’s so much cheaper to cook dry beans, though, and they have much less salt than store bought canned beans. Anyway, I reached deep in the cabinet to get  a jar. When I was pulling it out, the lid was loose, and the liquid was spilling out. When I got the jar out of the cabinet it looked like this.

home canned beans

Yuck! Yes, that is mold on top of the beans. Disgusting! I’m not sure how this happened, as I’m super careful to check the seals on the jars. I check several times, then I wash the jars before putting them away. Including all around the lids. I take the bands off before storing, as is recommended. So I’m not sure when the lid was loosened, as I would have discovered it while washing the jar. I’m sharing this as a reminder to those that can their own food, check and double check. Then when you are ready to eat the food, check the seal again. Keep your eyes open for any signs that the food isn’t good. I always smell the food before I use it, too. Even though they say you can’t see or smell botulism, there are other bacteria that you can see or smell that will also make you sick.

Yes, I’m going to continue to can my own food, including beans. And yes, I’m going to continue to be super careful.

Now…. to answer the question that I get asked about a hundred times a day……….

Saturday on the Farm – Garden Update

April 21, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Time for another Saturday on the Farm Garden Update! It’s such a beautiful time now, everything is growing and the flowering trees are gorgeous. We have several Dogwood and Red Bud Trees on the property. These two are in the backyard.

red bud tree dogwood tree

The Dogwoods were already here when we bought the property. We add the Red Bud trees. We got the seedlings for free at the conservation office. They give away several types of seedlings every year. If your looking for trees, check with your local conservation office to see if/when they giveaway trees.  We’ve also gotten pine trees and white oaks, in addition to the Red Bud trees. Of course, the seedlings are small. Ours have been in the 2 – 3 foot range. If your willing to be patient, you will end up with some beautiful trees for free.

red bud tree

The Red Bud flowers aren’t only beautiful, they are edible! I like to surprise guests by pulling down a branch and nibbling on the tree. roflol The flowers taste like lettuce, I think, not bitter, but a sweet sort of lettuce flavor. They make great garnishes, and are delicious in salads. I have also made Red Bud Jelly.

The Lilac bushes below are by the back porch stairs. The window on the right is the dining room, so I can see these when I’m sitting at the table. 🙂

That’s my little garden seat next to them. And just pretend you don’t see the grass growing under them… ahem….time for more mulch! The blossoms are getting ready to open. I can hardly wait. I check them every day !

lilac blossoms

I found blossoms on several Strawberry plants in the herb garden. The chickens usually get any strawberries that have ever grown. We don’t have any chickens this year, so hopefully, we’ll get some berries! (We’ll be getting chickens in the next month or so. yippee!)

In the Bible Garden, the Lily of the Valley have really spread this year. That’s a Hardy Cyclamen in front of them.

I love the little flowers on the Lily of the Valley’s. They’ll be open soon.

Our Apple trees are full of blossoms. They are pretty, too!

apple tree blossom

I hope we get lots of apples. Last year we didn’t get very many because a frost got the blossoms. This year they seem to be doing very well.

My father in law’s apple trees have even more blossoms than ours. He always shares with us, so I see lots of applesauce, homemade cider, and apple pies in our future.
