Apologia – I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist Book Review

August 21, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Schoolhouse Review Crew, I received the book I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist. I also received Apologia’s I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist Curriculum Workbook to review.

I used and reviewed two Apologia books earlier this year.  Who is My Neighbor? and Who Am I?. Those are written for ages 6-14. I was glad for the chance to do another review for Apologia. I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist is not by Apologia but is written by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek. Apologia has created a curriculum workbook to accompany the book. This book is written for adults, and the curriculum workbook is written for high school students.

To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide readers through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God. They move into an examination of the source of morality and the reliability of the New Testament accounts concerning Jesus. The final section of the book deals with a detailed investigation of the claims of Christ. This volume will be an interesting read for those skeptical about Christianity, as well as a helpful resource for Christians seeking to articulate a more sophisticated defense of their faith.

I read this book myself for the review. When I first started reading it, I wondered to myself how I was going to finish the book in the time I had before the review was due. The first section of the book is devoted to the science of the Bible, proving that creation did indeed occur. I found it to be slow reading, just because of the amount of scientific knowledge presented.  Once I got to the next few chapters on the history of the Bible I enjoyed the book much more. I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist is a very in depth book. In fact, I think it should be read over a longer period of time than the few weeks I took. I believe that’s why it’s a perfect that it has a companion workbook. This book is better read and studied a little at a time. There is just so much information to read, study and remember. I’m not going to get into any theology presented in the book, you’ll have to read it for yourself. However, I do believe that I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist does provide plenty of scientific and historical evidence that everything presented in the Bible is true. If you’re interested in the science and history of the Bible, you’ll love I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist.

I think the book also does a great job of explaining the different world religions. Here is one graphic from the book that I found helpful. It shows the difference between theism, pantheism, and atheism.

I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist Curriculum Workbook

Introducing Apologia’s first apologetics curriculum for high school students! Based on Norman Geisler and Frank Turek’s best-selling book I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist, this study will prepare teens and young adults to defend their Christian faith with boldness and effectiveness. During this course, your student will tackle the question of absolute truth, demolish the follies of postmodernism, debunk moral relativism, and march logically and surely toward the inescapable truths of the Christian faith. This is a companion study, so your student will need a copy of the original book, which is available through Apologia.

I did not write in the workbook as I wanted it to be ready for my high school students. However I have spent some time reading through the lessons. It is a very thorough workbook that will have your student or yourself digging deep into what they believe and why. This workbook is written for high age students. I think it is best suited for 17 and 18 year olds. Maybe 16 depending on their depth of understanding of science and spiritual matters. I’m now trying to decide when would be a good time to assign this book and work book to my high school students. I want them to be old enough and mature enough to get the most out of it. The chapters in the workbook each correspond to a chapter in the book. Included are brief biographies of people who helped shape Christian and non-Christian worldviews, vocabulary activities, questions to further encourage students to think about the content and more.

I’m going to recommend I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist to my husband and others. I also have a couple of people on my gift list that would love this book. I think the work book would be great for adults, too, as it really helps you understand and apply the information in the book.

The I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist Workbook sells for $33. on the Apologia website. You can view the  Table of Contents and a Sample Chapter.

Bible in 90 Days Week One

August 20, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Hello to all those participating in The Bible in 90 Days hosted by Mom’s Toolbox. I’m so excited to be your mentor for this session. I completed The Bible in 90 Days a couple of years ago, and have enjoyed being a mentor several times since then.  I’m also excited that our group will be reading the chronological plan. I’ve never read the Bible chronologically before. So, yes, I’m going to be reading right along with you!

Below is the reading plan for day one. You can download and print a The Bible in 90 Days Chronological Plan bookmark to keep in your Bible. This bookmark has the first two weeks reading on it. I find it much easier to print out the bookmark to keep in my Bible, then to look up each days reading on the computer. It’s also a great motivator to see all the check marks for days completed.  🙂

Zucchini and Yellow Squash Casserole Recipe

August 20, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This is a super simple casserole to make. The whole family loves it, so it’s a great way to get them to eat lots of veggies.

There is no written recipe. The amounts depend on how big your yellow squash and zucchini are and how much you want to make. You can use only one kind of squash if that is what you have on hand. You can also use homemade ranch salad dressing instead of store bought.

zucchini yellow squash casserole

Zucchini and Yellow Squash Casserole

Slice the squash, place into bowl. Coat with bottled Ranch Salad Dressing. If you like saucier casseroles, use more.  My kids like extra sauce. I usually use enough squash to fill a 9×13 baking dish, and would use a whole bottle of Ranch. Pour into lightly greased baking dish.

Top with your favorite grated cheese. We use Mozzarella. For browner cheese, put on casserole before you put it in the oven. Otherwise, you can wait to put the cheese on the last 10 minutes of cooking. You can also sprinkle with bread crumbs before baking for a crispy crust on top.

Bake in a *350 oven for 30-45 minutes until tender, cooking time depends on the size of your pan and the thickness of your slices.

Saturday on the Farm

August 18, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I have more pictures to share with you this week for my Saturday on the Farm tour. That makes me happy.   🙂

As does this Rose I found in the Bible Garden.

rose

How about a fun celery plant grown from the bottom of a store bought celery bunch?

It’s been fun watching it grow. I cleared out the rest of this raised bed to plant another crop of lettuce and spinach. i have netting on top of it now, so hopefully the kittens won’t destroy most of this crop.

Marigolds, amoungst other things, growing in the containers my daughter planted.

marigolds

marigold

A fun little flower. And all the marigolds will be saved to use as herbs. That makes me happy.

Here’s a basket of veggies we picked earlier in the week. The green beans were just barely enough for one meal. We would have eaten more if we’d had them.

green beans cucumber lettuce

And  here’s the basket my husband picked last night.

green beans yellow squash

A lot more green beans! Yeah! Very soon, we’ll be getting this basket full every day or two. Then I’ll be pulling out the pressure canner. Having lots of home grown, home canned green beans for the winter makes me very happy!

Hope you enjoyed this tour of my gardens!

Vocabulary Spelling City Review

August 18, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Schoolhouse Review Crew I received a free Vocabulary Spelling City.com online subscription to review.

Photobucket

Vocabulary Spelling City  offers over 42,000 spelling words with customizable sentences and definitions, a real person who says each word and sentence, free home pages for teachers and parents to save lists, teacher training videos, free printable handwriting worksheets, free teaching resources with lists and lesson plans, twenty-five games to play online or to print. Games include: Alphabetical Order, Unscramble, Parts of Speech, HangMouse, Crossword Puzzle, WordSearch, and Vocabulary Test.

Here’s an overview:

Vocabulary Spelling City’s mission is efficient game-based study of literacy skills using any word list.

Photobucket

Parents and teachers can search for and use the words and lists on the site or upload their own. I have a spelling curriculum that I’ve used for all my kids for years. It was very easy to input the words I wanted each of my students to use. In just a matter of minutes, I had a few lists for all four of my kids. I’ve only done 6 lists so far, but it would be very easy to input a whole years worth of spelling lists in a fairly short amount of time. I’ll be working on that shortly.

Once I had a list of words, I was able to pick which activities I wanted the students to complete. I originally had Teach Me, Alphabetical Order, Unscramble, HangMouse, Crossword Puzzle, WordSearch, and Spelling Test. Many of the games and activities are available to print for worksheets. I haven’t used this feature, as all my kids having been using it online only. You also have the option of choosing which students you want to assign the list to. That makes it easy if you have students that can work on the same list. You also have the option of choosing a due date, one that you set for the length of time you want. I gave all my students new lists on Mondays and with a due date Fridays.  If they found the list easy, and worked ahead, they could finish the work earlier and have a day or two off from spelling.

As they were doing it the first week, all four of the kids said they didn’t like HangMouse. As the kids are working down the list of activities, they have to complete each one before they can move onto the next activity. So I went in to change it. However, once students start working on a list, you can’t change the activities.  So unfortunately, deleting that assignment and starting over with it was the only way I could find to make the changes I needed.

That was the only problem I had with Vocabulary Spelling City, though. Overall, it was a great website to work with. My children have been enjoying their spelling lessons much more and spending more time working with on them than when they were writing them out on paper.  And that’s a good thing.  🙂 I also really liked the voice that said the words out loud. It’s a real voice, not a computerized voice.

I will be continuing to use this website with my kids for the rest of the school year, most likely returning to use for for a couple of more years.
