The Scent of Cherry Blossoms – Review

March 13, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Annie Martin loves the Plain ways of her Old Order Mennonite people, like those revered by her beloved grandfather. Retreating from a contentious relationship with her mother, Annie goes to live with her Daadi Moses in Apple Ridge.

But as spring moves into Pennsylvania and Annie spends time amongst the cherry trees with the handsome Aden Zook, she wishes she could forget how deeply the lines between the Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite are drawn.

Can Annie and Aden find a place for their love to bloom in the midst of the brewing storm?

The Scent of Cherry Blossoms

Read an excerpt from Chapter One of The Scent of Cherry Blossoms.

In The Scent of Cherry Blossoms, Annie doesn’t get along very well with her mother. Her father is absent, so her mother sends her to live with her Grandfather. After moving in with her Grandfather, Annie rekindles a childhood friendship with Aden. Unfortunately, Aden is an Old Order Amish, while Annie is an Old Order Mennonite. When her Grandfather finds out how close the two are becoming, he forbids them to see each other again.

The cherry tress that Annie’s Grandfather planted play an important part in Annie and Aden’s courtship.

“Love and loyalty are worth sacrificing for and our people know that. In time your people and mine will forgive us for ruffling their feathers.”  – Annie, page 190

Aden’s brother Roman, who is in a wheelchair, is also a main character in the book.  He has a lot to deal with trying to figure out where he belongs in the family business and what he really wants to do with his life. And who he wants to spend the rest of his life with. The book ends with Roman trying to make a very important decision in his life.

The Scent of Cherry Blossoms is a short book, a novella of 191 pages, so it’s a quick but lovely read. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent reading The Scent of Cherry Blossoms.

The Art of Argument Review

March 12, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a The Art of Argument, An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies set to review.

From the Classical Academic Press website:

Junior high aged students will argue (and sometimes quarrel), but they won’t argue well without good training. Young teens are also targeted by advertisers with a vengeance. From billboards to commercials to a walk down the mall, fallacious arguments are everywhere you look. The Art of Argument was designed to teach the argumentative adolescent how to reason with clarity, relevance and purpose at a time when he has a penchant for the “why” and “how”. It is designed to equip and sharpen young minds as they live, play, and grow in this highly commercial culture. This course teaches students to recognize and identify twenty-eight informal fallacies, and the eye-catching text includes over sixty slick and clever, “phony advertisements” for items from blue jeans to pick-up trucks, which apply the fallacies to a myriad of real life situations.

This text comes in a workbook format with clear explanations and many updated illustrations and examples to insure understanding and mastery. The text aims at the practical application of the informal fallacies through an analysis of current social, commercial and political issues, which are discussed and evaluated. This practical application should insure that students continue to evaluate arguments, detect fallacies and reason well long after the course is completed.

Students master 28 fallacies (such as begging the question, the straw man, ad hominen, et al) by studying many pertinent examples. The text features a variety of: dialogues, worksheets, real-world applications, phony advertisements, dialectic discussion questions and more…..

The Art of Argument is written for grades 7-9. It is also appropriate for high school students who haven’t studied logic. I have been using The Art of Argument with my 11th grade son who has never studied logic. I don’t think the curriculum is to easy or written to young for high school students. I find the lessons to be interesting and challenging. They really make the students think. With the media bombarding our children with what “they” think the kids should think, feel and not live without, it is so important to equip our kids to withstand the attack.

Through the lessons, worksheets and phony advertisements, kids learn to see the truth behind what is presented them. The student will also learn how to form their own statements in response to the flawed arguments they will see in commercials, newspapers, and other media.

The Art of Argument -An Introduction to Informal Fallacies Bundle sells on the Classical Academic Press website for $88.95. That includes the student text, the teachers edition and the DVD set with 5 DVDs. All the components of the bundle can also be purchase separately. You can view a sample section of the DVDs HERE, the sample is over 20 minutes long, so you can really see what they are like.

The DVD Set features three experienced logic teachers and four capable, enthusiastic students discussing the 28 fallacies with contemplation and humor. Each discussion seeks to make a practical application of the fallacy to student life, advertisements, political speech, and various kinds of ethical and philosophical debates. – from the website

The Teachers Edition is the same as the student text, with the answers filled in. It also has reproducible chapter tests and unit tests.  View samples of the Art of Argument Teacher’s Edition. You can also view samples of the Art of Argument Student Text.

I really liked The Art of Argument, An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies.  I plan on finishing the book with my 11th grade son, and using it with my other children.

Saturday on the Farm

March 10, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I went out a couple of hours ago and took some pictures of what is blooming and growing here.

The Mini Daffodils are dying out, but the full size Daffodils are still growing strong. They still have a lot of buds coming.

In the Bible Garden, the Burning Bush has buds.

And look what is leafing out by the back stairs. The Lilacs! My hope is still alive that this will be the year they bloom.

The Wild Rose Bushes are leafing out everywhere. These are in the back yard by the creek. And by my clothesline. They make hanging clothes on the line in the spring even nicer.

These are in front of the house growing on an old wagon wheel we found on the property when we moved here.

Hope you enjoyed a little tour. What’s blooming in your yard this week?

Our Homeschool Week in Review

March 9, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

hmmmmm…….What did we do this week?

Oh, we had a house guest from Sunday night until Thursday morning. The kids kept up with their work, but we did just the basics. Nothing overly fun or blog worthy. We did put in extra time drilling 3 of the kids for Bible Drill. They have to memorize so much, and be able to find it so fast.  Even after 4 years, I’m still amazed!

Hannah made Challah bread and Chocolate cake rolls in Home Ec today.

challah bread

She used our favorite chocolate cake recipe and baked it on a cookie sheet (with sides! lol). She made homemade whipped cream. She spread the cake with the whipped cream and rolled it up. I think she did a great job for her first time. Making a cake roll is hard!

I can’t eat the cake, but the whipped cream was delicious! Great job Hannah!

I posted another review for The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew this week. This time I reviewed Creek Edge Press Task Cards. This was the first time I had used these cards, and I loved them.  So go check out my review. 🙂 Have you ever used these task cards before?
