Saving Money on OTC Medicine

October 30, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Let’s face it, at some point your going to need to buy some over the counter medicines.

Especially if you have kids.

They are always going to be bumping and bruising themselves, and fevers are common place amoungst kids.

Of course, we are using coupons, watching sales and shopping at CVS and Walgreens to get these items for the least amount possible.

I have discovered that buying some items at our local pharmacy is often cheaper than store brands at CVS, Walgreens and Walmart.

Today, while I was at the doctors office, I bought some more acetaminophen at the pharmacy there. A generic 4 ounce bottle of liquid acetaminophen for $1.24.

Much cheaper than other store brands, and cheaper than name brands with coupons.

I noticed this at another pharmacy in the next town, also. I have also noticed it on other over the counter items, like anti-biotic ointment.

So the next time your in your local pharmacy, check their prices. You might discover that it will actually save you money to shop there.

Frugal House Plants

October 23, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love to have plants in the house. They look nice, and they help clean the air. That’s especially nice in the winter, when our houses are closed up tight.

In the spring, my mother in law gave me a couple of spider plant babies. Here’s what one of them looks like now.

See the long stem taking off to the left? That’s a new baby forming.

See the light green baby is this picture? When it gets a little bigger, I will be able to stick it in a pot of its own and let it grow.

There are lots of plants that can be grown from cuttings. Check with your neighbors, friends and families. Anyone who has spider plants will always have babies to give a way. And often they are willing to give you cuttings off plants of theirs that you like. And they will most likely know if that particular plant can be grown from cuttings.

You can find planters at yard sales, or on clearance very cheap. The biggest expense is potting soil. It’s usually cheaper at dollar type stores, than at larger stores or nurserys.

I also keep an old pitcher on the kitchen counter by the sink to put water for the plants in. We drink a lot of water, and sometimes you want to start over with fresh water in your glass. All the old water from our cups and water bottles gets put in here.

While, it doesn’t seem like much, the less water you use, the lower your water bill is. In the summer, I use cooking water to water the garden and outside plants.

Frugal Lunches

October 16, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Once the weather starts getting colder, the kids don’t like to have sandwiches for lunch anymore. Well, except for grilled cheese.

We had some leftover soup from supper last night. It wasn’t enough for lunch by itself. So I thickened it, and served it over biscuits.

There are lots of frugal lunches that can be made with leftovers.

– left over taco meat? mix with cooked pasta and diced tomatoes for taco pasta salad

– left over meatloaf? slice for sandwiches

– left over chicken? mix with barbecue sauce for sandwiches or mix with cooked pasta and Italian salad dressing.

-left over rice? make a stir fry with whatever leftover meat and veggies you have on hand. Add a splash of soy sauce.

– lots of left over cooked veggies? put them in a container in the freezer. You can add leftover veggies to the container whenever you have them. When you have enough, mix them with some leftover meat and broth, or left over gravy for a very frugal soup.

All of these frugal lunch ideas are quick and easy, and actually cheaper than buying lunchmeat. It’s also nice to have a warm meal when the weather is cold.

Christian Satellite TV

September 29, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We had our cable turned off at the end of June. D and I were happy. The kids? Not so much. We were tired of paying for junk that we refused to watch.

We lived, very nicely, without tv for about 3 weeks. We do have lots of dvds, so we did watch those.

Ah, then our new Glorystar Satellite arrived, and D got it installed.

We are so happy with it! There are over 50 Christian channels. A good portion of those are in foreign languages, though. We have 12 channels that we watch regularly. From Daystar & TBN, to Smile of a Child for the little kids and JCTV for the teens.

You may think 12 channels aren’t very many. Count how many channels you actually watch and how much you’re paying for them. I read news online, check the radar online, and can watch the local news online. I can even carry on a current events conversation with people, and I usually know everything that know about it. Yes, the kids have even watched programs from the mouse channel a few times. They rarely watch anymore, they have plenty of programming on the satellite that they like and we don’t have to worry about what they are watching!

When we had cable, most of the time, there wasn’t anything on worth watching. Now? We can always find something worth watching.

And get this! There are NO monthly bills! You buy the satellite and box. Then the programming is FREE!

No, I am not an affliate. I get NOTHING from them. We are happy with ourGlorystar Satellite, and I wanted to share.

So if your looking for quality Christian programming visit Glorystar Satellite and check out the channels they offer.

Frugal Friday – Electronic Coupons

March 6, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love using electronic coupons loaded on my Kroger card. The down side is, you can only load one of each coupon on your card. So you can’t stockpile, but it is still a convienent way to get extra coupons. Yo can have up to 25 coupons loaded on your Kroger card at one time. My Krogers lets me use the electronic coupon and a paper coupon on the same item. The e-coupon doesn’t double, though.

Here are the sites I currently use:

Shortcuts
P & G E-saver
Cellfire

Cellfire lets you load grocery coupons on your Kroger card, as well as sending coupons for other stores right to your cell phone. I haven’t tried that yet, I don’t think my cell phone will accept pictures. C & H have newer cell phones, so one of these days, I’ll try theirs. The guys were interested in a Gamestop coupon that we saw on Cellfire. (like they need anymore games! lol)

And don’t forget to register your Kroger card online. They send out a booklet of coupons every month or so. I also get coupons for the items I normally use. They send them every 2 or 3 months, and I regularly get cuopons for free items, like Cheerios and granola bars, I have even gotten coupons for free eggs. The also usually send me coupons for butter. Since we only use butter, I really like those.

Frugal Friday – Saving on Gas at Kroger

February 28, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Gas prices are down, but around here they have gone up a little recently. I live in a rural area, and our local store with a gas station was charging $1.79 this morning for gas.

Normally, this is 10 cents higher than gas in the larger town where I go shopping. D also works in this town, so he lets me know where the good gas prices are. 🙂

I was very happy a few weeks ago when our Kroger put in gas pumps. You get 3 cents off every gallon every day with your Kroger card. You also get 1 point for every dollar you spend at Krogers. When you get one hundred points, you get 10 cents off every gallon of gas!

I have noticed that Krogers gives the points on the before coupons total, not the final total. So the points do add up quickly, and I usually only buy clearance and sale items at Kroger.

Today, for example, our local station was charging $1.79 a gallon, and I paid $1.58 a gallon at Krogers. I bought 15 1/2 gallons. So I saved $3.25 today, just by buying gas in town, instead of before I went to town. Gotta love that!

Krogers prices are competitive with other gas stations in town. For example, there are 2 gas stations right across the stree from my Krogers. Today, when had the same price as Krogers, and one was 10 cents higher.

So if you have a Krogers nearby, it would be worth comparing prices. You might be able to save a lot, too.

Conserving Freezer Bags

January 30, 2009 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I have tried washing out the freezer bags. Really, I have. And I hate it. There I said it. Even though I’m frugal, I’d rather throw out a plastic bag than wash it. Shocking, I know!

So I have come up with a system to conserve freezer bags.

I like to keep pancakes, waffles, muffins and unbaked biscuits in the freezer for quick breakfasts. So now, when I empty a bag, I put it right back in the freezer. Yep, an empty bag in the freezer! Then the next time I make pancakes, etc. I pull the empty bag out of the freezer, fill it up with the item I have flash frozen on a cookie sheet, and put it back in.

Since the food is already frozen when I put it in the bag, and I never leave the bag out at room tempature, I believe this to be safe and sanitary.

It may not sound like much, but when I make these items, I make a LOT. For example, the other day I made 29 muffins. So I have to use 2 – 3 gallon size freezer bags to hold them. All the other breakfast items use 2-3 bags also. I’d rather make a lot once, then a few several times. 🙂

So that’s 10-12 bags a month I’m saving. Not as much as if I saved and washed every plastic bag. But it helps me conserve AND avoid the dreaded (and hated) task of washing out the bags!
