Progeny Press Literature Study Guides Review

March 18, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a Progeny Press Literature Study Guide to review. I received the PDF version of the Pride and Prejudice Study Guide. This Study Guide is recommended for 9-12 grades.

From the Progeny Press website:

The Mission of Progeny Press

“To teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on the scripturefor truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!”

At Progeny Press we are committed to teaching good cultural literature, examined from a Christian perspective. We believe in the equation “Biblical Truth + Cultural Relevancy = Effective Christians.” Take away biblical truth and Christians become no more than a religious subculture– salt without saltiness. Take away cultural relevancy and Christians become isolationists with no impact on the world– lights hidden under bushels. We believe in looking at the world clearly and openly with the Bible firmly in hand.

Progeny Press has over 100 study guides for literature, covering kindergarten through high school. Progeny Press study guides concentrate on critical thinking, comprehension, literary analysis, and Christian application. Our goal is to teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on scripture for truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!

There are over 100 Study Guides available in four different levels – lower elementary, upper elementary, middle school, and high school.  The guides are available as a print version, on cd in PDF format, or in PDF format sent by email. The prices range for $10.99 to $27.99 for the guides. The Pride & Prejudice PDF that I received by email sells for $18.99. The other options are booklet for $21.99, or CD for $18.99. You can also buy a set of the booklet and CD for $27.99.

I really love that the PDF is interactive. The student can fill out the answers right in the PDF. Then each student saves their file under their own name. Their answers are saved, while the original is intact. As a mom of 6, I appreciate the fact that I can use one Study Guide for all my students. You can also print out the PDF for the student to actually write on. I opted to print the PDF out for my 11th grade daughter. She prefers her books and schoolwork in paper form. It printed out great, with no problems. The cover art printed out very nice, also. For some of my other kids, the interactive PDF would be perfect. It is so nice to have these different options from one product. Perfect for families or group settings.

The interactive PDF does not correct the students work. You will still have to correct the answers that are mostly essay style. You can grade their work right on the computer and leave comments and notes within the file. All the titles for grades 4-12 are interactive in both CD and email PDF format. The titles in the Lower Elementary section are not interactive.

Progeny Press recommends taking 8-12 weeks to complete a study guide. Of course, you set your own pace with these guides.

Because the Study Guide has mostly essay style questions as opposed to questions on a worksheet, your student can dig deeper into the story. Learning comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking. The student will also learn scriptural principles, literary terms, and vocabulary. A complete answer key is also included.

I love books and I have tried to instill a love of books to my children. I also want to instill in my children a love for God and to rely on Scriptures for truth and values.I love that these Progeny Press Literature Study Guides really help the student to delve into the story and understand it better than just reading the book by itself. The Study Guides examine the books from a Christian perspective. So not only is the student reading great literature, but they are also learning Biblical truths at the same time. I wish I had had these study guides when I was a student! I glad they are available for my kids now.

You can view a Pride and Prejudice sample , as well as an interactive sample.   See the Progeny Press online catalog for more information.

The Art of Argument Review

March 12, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a The Art of Argument, An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies set to review.

Photobucket

From the Classical Academic Press website:

Junior high aged students will argue (and sometimes quarrel), but they won’t argue well without good training. Young teens are also targeted by advertisers with a vengeance. From billboards to commercials to a walk down the mall, fallacious arguments are everywhere you look. The Art of Argument was designed to teach the argumentative adolescent how to reason with clarity, relevance and purpose at a time when he has a penchant for the “why” and “how”. It is designed to equip and sharpen young minds as they live, play, and grow in this highly commercial culture. This course teaches students to recognize and identify twenty-eight informal fallacies, and the eye-catching text includes over sixty slick and clever, “phony advertisements” for items from blue jeans to pick-up trucks, which apply the fallacies to a myriad of real life situations.

This text comes in a workbook format with clear explanations and many updated illustrations and examples to insure understanding and mastery. The text aims at the practical application of the informal fallacies through an analysis of current social, commercial and political issues, which are discussed and evaluated. This practical application should insure that students continue to evaluate arguments, detect fallacies and reason well long after the course is completed.

Students master 28 fallacies (such as begging the question, the straw man, ad hominen, et al) by studying many pertinent examples. The text features a variety of: dialogues, worksheets, real-world applications, phony advertisements, dialectic discussion questions and more…..

Photobucket

The Art of Argument is written for grades 7-9. It is also appropriate for high school students who haven’t studied logic. I have been using The Art of Argument with my 11th grade son who has never studied logic. I don’t think the curriculum is to easy or written to young for high school students. I find the lessons to be interesting and challenging. They really make the students think. With the media bombarding our children with what “they” think the kids should think, feel and not live without, it is so important to equip our kids to withstand the attack.

Through the lessons, worksheets and phony advertisements, kids learn to see the truth behind what is presented them. The student will also learn how to form their own statements in response to the flawed arguments they will see in commercials, newspapers, and other media.

Photobucket

The Art of Argument -An Introduction to Informal Fallacies Bundle sells on the Classical Academic Press website for $88.95. That includes the student text, the teachers edition and the DVD set with 5 DVDs. All the components of the bundle can also be purchase separately. You can view a sample section of the DVDs HERE, the sample is over 20 minutes long, so you can really see what they are like.

The DVD Set features three experienced logic teachers and four capable, enthusiastic students discussing the 28 fallacies with contemplation and humor. Each discussion seeks to make a practical application of the fallacy to student life, advertisements, political speech, and various kinds of ethical and philosophical debates. – from the website

Photobucket

The Teachers Edition is the same as the student text, with the answers filled in. It also has reproducible chapter tests and unit tests.  View samples of the Art of Argument Teacher’s Edition. You can also view samples of the Art of Argument Student Text.

I really liked The Art of Argument, An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies.  I plan on finishing the book with my 11th grade son, and using it with my other children.

Creek Edge Press Task Cards Review

March 8, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a set of Creek Edge Press Earth and Space Task Cards to review.

Photobucket

From the Creek Edge Press website:

Creek Edge Press Presents: The Task Card Approach

Our goal is to provide a simple tool that pulls together the best of Classical, Charlotte Mason, and Montessori education. We do this with affordable, topic based Task Card Sets that facilitate discovery based, research oriented, independent learning.

About the Earth and Space Cards:

This K-8 course is comprised of discovery-oriented tasks designed to facilitate engaged learning in earth science, weather, space, the planets, and constellations.  Your students will build a foundation for the study of earth science and space through an investigation of their distinctive features. They will explore weather and be introduced to the wonders of space. An exploration of the planets and constellations that make up our Solar System wrap up the course.

Each Task Card Set includes the cards themselves as well as an Introduction to the course for the Mom or teacher. The Introduction includes instructions for using the cards, step by step instructions for preparing the learning environment, and a guide for selecting books and other materials for the course.

Photobucket

I had my 7th grader use these cards. She loves to to do all her work by herself, so this curriculum is a good fit for her. I have started to cover the cards with clear contact paper to protect them. We can still check off the squares using a marker, and erase it when we’re done. That way I can use the cards again with another child. Replacement cards are available for 50 cents each, in case you lose a card or one gets ruined. As a mom of 6, I love that! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to replace a school item because one part of it got lost or ruined. Thank you for that option, Creek Edge Press!

Here is one of the Earth and Space cards:

Photobucket

The cards all have a list of activities for the student to do. Some are reading, research, exploring or making something. A poster, something out of clay, a drawing.

In the picture above, you can see the Earth and Space Task Cards Introduction book. It’s more of a guide than a teachers manual. It will guide you through using the cards with your students, preparing the learning environment, a book list and more. It also has information on using the task cards in a group setting, such as a co-op. The guide has information on on how to use the cards when the parent wants a more hands on approach to their childs learning, also.

As you can see on the task card above, the student has a list of tasks to accomplish and can work on them at their own pace. The guide suggests taking one week per card. This curriculum is very flexible and you can very easily adjust the time frame to fit your family and students. The task cards are designed to be worked on independently by the student. Younger students may need help with the reading, but most tasks are easily accomplished by the student alone. This is the perfect curriculum to teach students to work independently. Even children that haven’t worked independently in the past will have an easy time adjusting to using the task cards. A lot of the activities on the cards are seen as “fun” by kids, such as drawing, making posters or collecting pictures for a collage, making it easy for them to start working on their own.

The tasks cards are not all fun, though. This is not just an art class. The students will learn the same information that they would from a text book. They are just learning it in an environment that encourages independent learning and research. This curriculum is perfect if you use a Classical, Charlotte Mason, and Montessori approach to education. If you use textbooks in your homeschool, these cards are a great way to introduce independent learning to your children. Creek Edge Press Task Cards offer a very thorough curriculum for grades K-8.

I’m loving these task cards and we are going to continue to use them. I will also be purchasing more sets in the future.

Creek Edge Press Earth and Space Task Card Set is available on their website for $18. Creek Edge Press also have other card sets available for science, history, geography, art, music, and grammar reinforcement. To see sample cards from all these subjects, visit Creek Edge Press’s Gallery Page. For more information, visit the FAQ page.

K5 Learning Review

March 5, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a free trial to K5 Learning. My 11 year old, 5th grade son, used our K5 Learning trial.

K5 Learning is an online study program for kids in kindergarten to grade 5.  K5 Learning builds reading, math and study skills to last a lifetime.  Watch our Intro Video. You can also view sample lessons.

Photobucket

K5 Reading offers lessons in these 5 key skill areas: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Sight Words, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension.

K5 Math  offers lessons in these 5 key skill areas: Numbers and Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Algebra, Data Analysis.

K5 Spelling offers a 100,000+ word database covering all skill levels. Parents can also easily input their own spelling list for the child to practice.

K5 Math Facts records every response a child makes, continually analyzing what facts your child has mastered or needs further practice at, and generates questions based on that child’s needs

Kids start with K5 Learning by taking both math and reading assessments. You do have the option to skip the assessments if you choose. Also, if you find the level assigned by the program to be too easy or too difficult, you can change the levels.

Photobucket

Parents have a separate log in from the kids. From the parents dashboard, you can track your childs progress. You can also get lesson by lesson reports so you can see exactly where your child is and how they are doing.

From the parents page, you can visit the Worksheet Center, where you can print out math worksheets for grades 1-6. This makes it easy to continue the learning away from the computer. And gives the child practice doing the problems on paper.

Photobucket

After the child logs in, their home screen features a different riddle everyday. My son loved reading these. You can click on an answer button to get the answer to the riddle. From this home screen, the child picks what subject they want to work on. They can choose from Reading & Math, Math Facts & Spelling.

In the Math Facts section, the child can make an avatar. Something my son and other kids love to do. This screen shot is from the K5 Math Facts section. The child can tell at a glance on this screen how many problems they know, and what they need to work on.

Monthly subscriptions to K5 Learning are $25 for the first child and $15 for additional children. An annual subscription is also available for $199 for the first child and $129 for additional children.

Try a 14 Day Free Trial that includes free reading  & math assessments and 14 days of free lessons.

When you sign up for the 14 day free trial, and your child takes the assessments test, you can keep the assessment reports. Even if you don’t continue with K5 beyond the free trial, the reports are yours to keep.

Reading Eggs

March 1, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a free trial of an online reading curriculum called Reading Eggs.

Photobucket

From the Reading Eggs website:

Learning to read is an important skill for all children. And we wanted to make it an enjoyable experience for children as well. Children love working and playing on the computer and the Reading Eggs program is all about bringing out the best in each child.

The program has been developed by a highly experienced team of educational teachers, writers and developers. The Reading Eggs program focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. It completely supports what children learn at school and will help to improve your child’s results at school.

With interactive animations, fun games, great songs and lots of rewards, Reading Eggs is a great place to learn to read. Children are highly motivated to return again and again. At Reading Eggs, learning to read is enjoyable as well as very rewarding. Every lesson ends with a new book and a new critter to add to your growing collection.

Reading Eggs now has 100 big lessons. These 100 lessons are perfect for 4 to 7 year olds who are learning to read.

Photobucket

We are still building more NEW lessons for our older Eggsplorers as part of Reading Eggs World. This world is perfect for 6-8 year olds who already know the basics of reading but who still have much to learn about reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension. This exciting new world has lots of new lessons, a creative story writing factory, new games and will soon have many wonderful new books to read in Storylands. The learning focuses on building reading fluency and comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and a range of writing skills including grammar and punctuation.

In Reading Eggs World, children have their own house to decorate, a big new shop and an avatar that can walk and travel to many new destinations on Reggie’s bus. Children are able to choose their own adventure from a wide range of activities and places to go.

This new world of interactive reading and writing activities will help to set kids up with positive attitudes about reading and learning for life. That’s a tall order, we know, but we are passionately committed to delivering this to hatching readers everywhere. Please join us on this magical journey of eggsploration.

I used Reading Eggs with my 11 year old son. I liked the variety of lessons available on Reading Eggs. In this first screen shot, the narrator is saying a sentence, and the child has to click on the right sentence. The can click the “Play Audio” button to have the sentence repeated. Since the sentences look similar, the child has to really pay attention. My son would listen to only have the sentence and click on the first sentence he saw that matched. After not liking getting a lot wrong, he finally learned to listen to the complete sentence.

Photobucket

That is obviously farther along in the lessons.  Since children can start using Reading Eggs at age 4, the lessons start with beginning reading skills. There are a lot of games that the child can play while learning at the same time.

Photobucket

They also have a menu available to them. They can do their lessons, play a game, dress up their avatar and more. There are also printable activity sheets matched to each lesson.

Photobucket

Once your child progresses through the Reading Eggs 100 lessons, geared towards ages 4-7, they can then visit Reading Eggspress. Reading Eggspress is for children ages 7-13. With hundreds of online games and activities, your child will continue to develop their reading skills.

From this floating island pictured below, the child can access the different buildings and thereby the different lessons, books and games.

Photobucket

Another sample screen shot:

Photobucket

The character with the red arrow above it’s head, is the same avatar my son had. In Reading Eggspress, the kids earn Eggs for reading books. They can then buy clothing, hats, shoes, and even jewelry to dress up their avatars.

Photobucket

My son enjoyed the Reading Eggs lessons. He liked the variety of books available to choose from.  He also very much liked playing the many games available. He even spent quite a bit of time buying stuff for his avatar. A fun reward for doing reading lessons and reading books.  🙂

Reading Eggs has several subscription options available:

Monthly Recurring Subscription – $9.95 per month and you have the flexibility to cancel at any time.

6 Month Subscription – $49.95

12 Month Subscription – $75.

Book Packs are also available for purchase. For more information, visit the Reading Eggs Pricing Page.

Apologia – Who Am I?

February 22, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew I received Apologia’s Who Am I? to review.

Photobucket

From the Apologia website:

What We Believe

Our children are bombarded on a daily basis with competing messages. Every song, movie, book, TV show, blog, and game is full of ideas—ideas about truth, morality, beauty, identity, faith, and more. Not all of these ideas are true. Some are wrong, some are deceptive, and some are outright destructive. It is more important than ever that young children be equipped to discern among competing ideas and stand in the truth. This is why Apologia has teamed with Summit Ministries to bring you the “What We Believe” Series. The “What We Believe” Series is an outstanding way to teach your child the essential beliefs of the Christian faith, but it’s so much more! With this student-directed, Bible-based curriculum, your children will learn how to use Scripture as a lens through which to view the world around them—to see everything the way God sees it—and know the truth.

Photobucket

The second book in the What We Believe series, Who Am I? (And What Am I Doing Here?) helps children understand what it means to be fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of the Most High God. This study will enable students to develop a healthy self-image based on these biblical truths: God made me in His image and crowned me with glory; He has given me special gifts and a unique purpose in life; I can creatively express God’s love; I am meant to think about beautiful and praiseworthy things, especially God and His Word; I must make decisions based on God’s truth; I can always know the wise thing to do; I must cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in my life; I am a beloved child of God whose true identity is found in Christ.

My kids and I enjoyed the lessons in Who Am I? Who Am I? is designed for children ages 6-14. Making it perfect for homeschooling families to read together. Younger and older children could also use it in my opinion. I used Who Am I? with my 11 and 13 year olds.   Who Am I? is designed for students to work at their own pace. Older students can work through the text on their own, while younger students will enjoy your reading the lesson to them, or using the audio book mentioned below.  My kids all enjoy hearing me read out loud, and prefer I do the reading when we’re working on something together. I found my 16 and 17 year olds would end up in the room listening, also. I found the stories very interesting myself.  🙂

Children learn about world view and other religions through stories of other children. The stories are interesting, inspiring, and will open your children’s eyes to how others live. While at the same time helping them to come to know who they are and how God sees them.

The book is divided into 8 lessons and recommends taking 3 weeks per lesson, working 2 days a week. Each lesson is designed to be flexible, and easily adapted to your families needs. There are several pages in the front of the book to help the parent/teacher help there students get the most out of the lessons. I found these very helpful.

You can view a sample lesson from Who Am I? and the Who Am I? table of contents.

The text suggests the children make notebooks of what they are learning and has ideas for notebook pages in the lessons. Apologia has made this even easier by offering a Notebooking Journal ($24).

Photobucket

While buying the Notebooking Journal is not necessary to the curriculum, it is a fun and useful book. There are lesson plans in the front so the student knows which pages of the journal go along with which lesson from the text. The Notebooking Journal contains writing prompts, puzzles and more to help your student create a record of what they have learned on it’s more than 240 pages. It really helps them to think about what they learned in the lesson and apply it to their lives.  I think this would be best used by older students. I know my 11 year old wouldn’t use it to it’s fullest, and it’s not to “young”  for my 16 and 17 year old to use. The Notebooking Journal is a nice, spiral bound book for your kids to work with and makes an excellent addition to a portfolio. However, I think the $24 price is too high for many families. I know I wouldn’t spend almost $100 for notebooks for my 4 kids. We would make our own. That’s just my opinion. You may very well think it would be better to spend that much so you didn’t have to make notebooks. lol

Also available to make your lessons easier is a Who Am I? Audi Book ($19). How nice it is some days to have someone else do the reading aloud! This is an MP3 CD, which means it won’t play in regular cd players. The Cd player has to read MP3 for it to work. It also works on the computer. It includes a MP3 CD player (on the CD, to be used on the computer) that is quick and easy to use. The voices on the CD are calm and clear, making it easy for all to listen.

Photobucket

My son loved this Who Am I? Coloring Book ($8.). The coloring book, 64 pages, reinforces what is learned in the lessons. It’s perfect for little ones to use while listening to the days lesson. Or for quiet activity later in the day that will help them remember the lesson.

Photobucket

Here’s one of the pictures my son colored:

All the pages have either a line from the lesson or a Bible verse at the bottom. I had my son use the coloring book and he loved it.

ALEKS Math Review

February 15, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I was given a 2 month subscription to ALEKS to try.

ALEKS is an online assessment and learning system geared for those in 3rd to 12th grades.

Photobucket

What is ALEKS? From the ALEKS website:

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.

ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.

I’ve been using ALEKS with my 13 year old daughter, 7th grade, and my 11 year old, 5th grade, son.

From the Master Account page, which the parent signs into with their own id and password, you can do things like add students, create quizzes and get progress reports for your students. Since I had two students enrolled, I could manage both easily from this Master Account.

Photobucket

The students each have their own id and password to log in with. They do no have access to the Master Account page.

I started my daughter with the Middle School Math Course 1. The picture below shows Middle School Math Course 2, but the Math Course 1 pie looks similar. When the student starts their work for the day, they come to this My Pie page. They can then hover over the pie to see what is available for them to work on. They can then click on what the choose to do that day.

Photobucket

Below are a couple of sample math questions. As you can see from the screen, on some problems they have a calculator available to them. The program decides which problems the calculator can be used for. The Dictionary is also available for some problems.

Photobucket

Photobucket

My daughter had problems similar to the one below in her Middle School Math 1 Course. The controls were very easy to use. You can’t see it in this picture, but there is a help button at the bottom. The student can see an explanation of how to do the problem and how to use the controls to answer the problem on the screen.

Photobucket

Photobucket

My son really enjoyed working on the Quick Tables. Quick Tables are available for Addition, Subtraction, and Multiplication. As you can see from the picture below, the student can see at a glance how they are doing. The table is color coded, with the key to the left. This is the screen they start with for their daily lesson. There will be one or more yellow squares, and the student clicks the one they want to start with. The Progress bar on the right is a very visual way for the student to see how they are doing. The stars on the right of the Progress Bar are when new games are available. My son loved seeing all the squares on his table turning green.

Photobucket

Here’s a screen shot of my son’s table. You can see the different colors on his table. The yellow squares were the ones available for him to click on.

Once a student reaches a certain percentage of work done on the Quick Tables, the program makes a game available to them. He always watches his progress to see when he can unlock a new game. He loved playing the games as a reward for working. As you can see from the screen below, math problems are still worked in the games. So while they are playing a game as a reward for working, they are still learning.

Photobucket

Both my son and my daughter were able to log in and work independently. That is a plus when you have multiple students. It’s easy to track their progress on the Master Account page.

My son really liked working with ALEKS. He loved see the colors change on his Quick Table.

My daughter liked working with ALEKS, also. She liked having some control over what subject she would work on, as shown in the My Pie picture above. She found the controls easy to use, and the explanations thorough.

I didn’t like that you could only assign one course per student. For example, you can’t assign a student Quick Tables and Middle School Math at the same time. You can easily switch courses at any time, however, the records are not kept when you switch. If I had my student work in Middle School Math for a few weeks, then moved them to Quick Tables Multiplication, their Middle School Math work wouldn’t be kept. When they finished the Quick Tables Multiplication, and I moved them back to MS Math, they would have to start over.

In my opinion, they $19.95 a month subscription price is a little steep. For the lower grades, I do believe there are lower price alternatives available. However, ALEKS covers Middle and High School Math as well. I haven’t seen anything like this for High School math before. So if you have a highschooler struggling with algebra and higher maths, ALEKS might be just what you need to help them. ALEKS will also help high school students prepare for the SATs. There is even a GED Prep Course available. The subscription price may well be worth it for high school students.

ALEKS is available by Subscription for $19.95 a month, $99.95 for 6 months of access, or $179.95 for 12 months. Those prices are for one student. For families with more than one child, discount pricing is available.

Right now, ALEKS is offering a 2 month subscription trial for new members. Try it for two months to see how it works for your family.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:16-17 NKJV
