The Schoolhouse Library

May 25, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The Old Schoohouse Magazine has just launched it’s newest homeschool resource. The Schoolhouse Library. I have loved the Old Schoolhouse Magazine for years. It was the only homeschool magazine I subscribed to. For the last couple of years, I have been blessed to be a part of The Schoolhouse Review Crew, reviewing homeschool products. I’m excited about the new Schoolhouse Library!

The Schoolhouse Library

I haven’t seen any of the products included in the Schoolhouse Library yet, I will receive a package free in exchange for this post.

More than 175 ebooks, lapbooks, audio books, unit studies, study guides, maps, and more,  covering over 25 topics are included in the library. Art, Bible, organization (with several planners included), nature studies, homeschool encouragement & support and special needs are some of the topics covered.

There really is too much included in this package to list. The Schoolhouse Library looks to be an incredible resource for homeschoolers. You get the over 175 ebooks included in this digital library for only $25. Then, when new titles are added to the library, you get those, too, for free. A very frugal resource for your homeschool.

*Disclosure: I will receive a Schoolhouse Library package for free in exchange for this post. I received no other compensation. My opinions are my own.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

May 3, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I looked across the living room the other night and this is what I saw:

Why, yes, Zach (12) is sitting in the living room peeling the bark off a branch. In the living room? When I told him to get it out of my living room, he said, “But I’m doing it on my lap.” lol Nope, still had to take it outside. He’s working on making a bow. He asked me the other day about making one, so I directed him to The Dangerous Book for Boys (affiliate link) book I had on the shelf. He found the instructions for making a bow and arrows. So that project is coming along nicely. Outside, where it belongs!

I got a delivery the other day that came packed in a styrofoam box. When Zach looked at the inside of the lid he said, “That looks like England’s flag!” Which led to this Facebook status:

Kid – What color is England’s flag?
Mom – Red, white and blue
Kid – Like ours! Ok, what color goes where?
Mom – I hate to break it to you, but I don’t have every countries flag memorized. Sorry to burst your homeschool teacher bubble.

He was ready to paint, and fully convinced that I could tell him where to put the colors. lol I had him get an atlas off the shelf and look it up. He did great finding it by himself, then proceeded to color the flag.

You can see in the picture (when you make it bigger) that the parts that are blue are raised in the styrofoam, making the design obvious. He did a good job painting it considering that water color doesn’t stick very well to styrofoam.

I was missing Hannah this afternoon, and went searching for her. I finally found her outside at the picnic table doing her math. I love when the weather is nice and they can take their schoolwork outside. So much nicer than being in the house studying.

I posted a Schoolhouse Review Crew review that you might be interested in checking out.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

April 26, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Sickness has struck our house. Again. It’s just a cold, but it’s a bad cold. sigh. I was so hoping that spring would bring an end to the colds. The 12 old has been sick all week, and my husband and I have had it for a couple of days now. It’s not fun.

Anyway, on to the homeschool stuff. Zach didn’t get any work done because he felt so bad.  The other three are working right along. Hannah and Abby were the most diligent this week. Calen is dragging his feet. I’m not sure why, because as soon as he finishes the subjects he’s working on, he graduates. I have to work with him this week to come up with a plan for finishing and graduation.

On Tuesday, Calen and Abby went with some of the youth from church to the Ronald McDonald house in our state to cook supper for the families. Here’s a group shot, minus the one taking the picture, and the girl that didn’t want her picture taken. My two are the ones without their faces blurred. lol Wait, except for the red head, he’s not mine!

Here’s Calen and one of the adults from church cooking. They made spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and brownies.

This is the third time that our youth group has gone, but the first time any of my kids went. It was a very good experience for them. Here’s Abby and one of the girls from church.

Our church also had revival services this week. So that kept us busy in the evenings, for those that were well enough to go.

Hopefully, no one else comes down with this cold so we can get back to work on Monday. It looks like it’s going to be a fairly quiet week so we should be able to get lots of schoolwork done.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

April 20, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Major announcement time!! Hannah finished Algebra this week!   *cue applause*  As you can tell, she is very happy to be done!

She’s already working on her next math book, consumer math. Then she’ll head on into geometry.

Hannah made cupcakes this week for Israel’s Independence Day. Of course, the rest of the kids don’t care what day it is. Any day is a good day for cupcakes! lol

On Wednesday, I got a new book in the mail. Zach opened the box, but wasn’t too sure about the book. Until I showed him a picture inside of a sword fight. Well, now he was interested. lol He sat down and read the whole book in less than two hours.

He was a late reader, not reading on his own until he was 10. He sure has made up for it! He reads chapter books like they are going out of style.  He really liked this book. Now he’s asking for more Robin Hood books. He wants the originals, he said. I hope I can find those on Paperback Swap. lol

Our Homeschool Week in Review

April 13, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I sent Calen, 18, out to work in the garden the other day, and he returned a few minutes later to bring me this dandelion. He’s so sweet. Although he didn’t really care me me saying so in my Facebook status for all his friends to see. lol

dandelion

Speaking of Facebook status’s, here’s one from Thursday:

Mom – You weren’t doing your schoolwork you were on Facebook!
Kid – How do you know I was on FB?
Mom – You liked stuff and FB tattletaled on you!
Kid – I don’t like FB anymore!

So thank you Facebook for tattletaling on my kids! lol

Notice I didn’t use the kids name. lol Kid did do their schoolwork. I think another one of the kids will finish Algebra 1 this week. I’m very happy for her!  Only two more kids to get through Algebra. I wish I had known about Teaching Textbooks with my first two high schoolers. I like it much better than the Saxon we were using.

Abby, the eighth grader, finished her science book this week. I love this time of year when they all are finishing books. I’m sure they do , too. lol

To keep things exciting, we’ve been getting new products to review. Right now, we’re reading a supplemental science book, doing a history lapbook, reading a book about Sacagawea, and working on a high school non-fiction writing course. Look for those reviews coming over the next few weeks. Last week, I posted my latest review for the The Schoolhouse Review Crew  – Computer Science for Kids – Computer Bible Games.

Last night and tonight, Saturday, Calen and Abby are playing the guitar and singing with their band from church at two different charity events. Calen plays the guitar and Abby sings. She often is the lead singer, taking turns with the other girls. They are getting great experience performing on stage in front of other people, and helping out the families that money is being raised for. Calen has started playing the guitar on Wednesdays in the youth service. Abby sings on Sunday nights in church. Calen will sometimes play on Sunday nights if he can fit it in. He also runs the sound board, the live internet broadcast, as well as taping the service for future viewing online, and prepares the audio for radio broadcast. For both Sunday services. Yes, he’s very busy, but he loves it.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

April 6, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I found this little guy this week, and just had to add him to my graduation stash. He’ll be a great addition to our upcoming graduation parties.

You can tell it’s spring here in Kentucky, the volleyball net went up! The girls were happy. Now they’ll be able to keep up with their volleyball skills. Well, Hannah will be graduated, so she won’t be able to play on the homeschool volleyball team. But she will still have fun and get some great exercise playing in our yard.

Our four little kittens are starting to walk around and are so cute. All the kids have spent a lot of time playing with and watching the kittens this week. I managed to get this picture of the two 12th graders laying on the living room floor playing with the kittens.

Oh, yes, book work! That was done, too! Zach begged and begged for a new Star Wars book, so I finally gave in and found the one he wanted on Paperback Swap. He read it in less than 24 hours. It was a long chapter book, not a picture book. Now he’s begging for another book in the series. lol He was a late reader, but certainly has made up for it since.
I posted two homeschool reviews recently, A Journey Through Learning Knights & Castles Lapbook and Classical Academic Press The Art of Poetry. Stop by and check them out!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

March 22, 2013 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We had an unusual occurrence here this week. Tuesday night’s regular band practice was cancelled, so after Dad got home, no one had anywhere to go! That is unusual because every night of the week has someone having to go somewhere. Tuesday is usually pizza night, so we ate our delicious, lol, homemade pizza and watched a movie. Then we had game night. We played Yahtzee and Jenga Boom (affiliate link)Affiliate Link
as a family. I won the Jenga Boom game in a giveaway and it had just arrived that afternoon. It was perfect timing. It was so nice to have a relaxing night at home with everyone.

Zachary finished the Knights and Castles lapbook that he’d been working on. I have a review for it coming up next week.

knights and castles lapbook

We also have a few other items we’re working on for reviews, a poetry course, a non-fiction writing course for high schoolers, and a computer programming course that Zach is working on. Those review will all be coming up soon, too.

We discovered a new Hebrew course on Schoolhouse Teachers.com (affiliate link). Hannah’s been learning Hebrew, so we’re excited for this new course. She’s done one lesson so far, and liked it.

Hannah finished embroidering a blanket that her cousin asked her to do. She embroidered the name and birth date of another cousins baby on the blanket. Yes, that is a camo blanket. lol She did a great job, of course.

In fact, her plans for after high school are to make and sell crafts. She does many different things and does a great job on all of them.

This next week should be extra busy for us. In addition to our regular work, we will be moving all the clothes at out churches clothes closet. Our family works there as a family ministry every Saturday. We now are going to be moving everything to a new home on the other side of the building. At least we get a chance to clean out everything and reorganize. That’s positive thinking. lol It’s actually for the best, as our moving will open an area of the building that will be made into a youth center. The kids are looking forward to that!

That’s our homeschool week in review!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
