Our Homeschool Week in Review

March 2, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Another busy homeschool week here. 🙂  Punctuated by thunderstorms and tornado warnings. Kentucky is having another round of severe weather today. We had thunderstorms this morning. Right now the sun is shining, but there are more storms on the way. Including tornado warnings all over the state. Our church even cancelled family movie night tonight because of the severe weather.

On the good days this week, I put the kids to work outside. We made a lot of progress on the spring work list.

Bible Drill competition starts up on the 18th of this month. some of the kids have been working hard to get ready. The others really have to put their nose to the grindstone, so to speak, in order to be ready. The 10th – 12th grade level of Bible Drill has the kids memorizing whole passages of the Bible. They also have to be able to identify individual verses within the passages. Tough stuff!

Zach had fun recently testing Reading Eggs for the Homeschool Crew. It’s an online reading curriculum. Full of learning, games and other fun. My review of Reading Eggs is up, so stop by and check it out.

I checked the camera for pictures to share, and found I only took one picture this week. And that was about an hour ago.lol

Hannah has become quite the bread baker. She’s baking Challah bread today, and I got a picture of her braiding the dough.

We had a good homeschooling week this week. We’re looking forward to another great week next week. Hopefully without the severe weather!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

February 24, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Our first week back from Sabbath Week has been a good one!

The kids all got new books. And one got a new computer program to try. I can’t tell you what they are yet, as they are for The Homeschool Crew. I posted a review this week of something we tried recently. Who am I? by Apologia.

After getting 3-4 inches of snow on Sunday, we had several nice days this week. In the 50’s and 60’s. You’ve got to love Kentucky weather! lol So the kids spent quite a bit of time outside going for long walks, playing basketball and volleyball. The kids took lots and lots of snow pictures, but I couldn’t decide which ones to post! They had so many good ones.

Here’s one of my sons and my nephew walking in the snow. That’s our driveway to the right of the boys.

The girls somehow managed to get the volleyball stuck in a tree. lol As you can tell, this was after the snow melted and the temps went up to t-shirt weather.

In Home Ec, Hannah made 9 dozen Lofthouse Cookies (that’s what she said they were called, anyway lol), 2 dozen banana muffins and 2 loaves of banana bread. She put 2 dozen cookies, 1 dozen muffins and one bread in the freezer. Her siblings and father took care of the rest. lol

Our Homeschool Week in Review

February 18, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This week was Sabbath Week for us. This picture pretty much sums up the kids week.

Yes, laying around and being lazy. And computer time.

One kid didn’t feel well with a cold. But the rest were just lazy. lol The did have a nice rest, so should be able to work extra hard next week. 🙂

I did, however, have a nice chat with the kids about the next Sabbath Week and how they will be more productive at something than they were this time.  Holding the couch down so it doesn’t float up to the ceiling and making sure the keyboards don’t collect dust, don’t count as productive.  🙂

Thursday night, they had a recognized the girls volleyball team and the one senior before the start of the boys basketball game. It was very nice. I don’t have any pictures to share, as they all have the other girls in them. The girls are already looking forward to next season.

We’re back to work on Monday with a few new products to try for The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew.

Should be a fun week!

Our Homeschool Week in Review

February 10, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

My 11 year old,, Zach, has been using Math Rider in addition to his regular Rod & Staff math. I reviewed it for The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew. My review of Math Rider has now posted, so I can talk about it. He loved it! I love this picture, as he always does that with his lips when he’s concentrating on something.

If your looking for a math game that helps your kids master the 4 basic functions, check out my Math Rider review.

The kids have also been preparing for another episode of The Geek Show. That’s the show they film. They put a lot of time and effort into the shows. They also manage to completely trash the house multiple times for each episode. sigh……They love it, and they are learning, so I let them do it. Then make them clean it up!  🙂

Abby worked on a backdrop for The Geek Show Trivia. It’s going to be a show within a show type thing. Their poor unsuspecting guest stars won’t know what hit them. As my kids will know the questions and answers and the guests won’t. Should be funny! lol

Yes, I got permission to use the funny face picture. lol

For Home Ec, Hannah made two loaves of Challah Bread and Apple Pie last Friday. She actually cut enough apples for two pies so I could make a pie with a gluten free crust.  Judging by how fast the family ate her bread and pie, they were really good!

On Wednesday, I looked at the calendar, and realized that this week was supposed to be our Sabbath Week. Oops! So we’re going to finish out the week and have our Sabbath Week next week. We missed the last Sabbath Week, as they didn’t get all their work done to be able to take a week off. Missing that week improved their work, and everyone is looking forward to this Sabbath Week. Including Me!  🙂

Our Homeschool Week in Review

January 28, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since I’ve posted a homeschool uupdate!

We’re still plugging along with our schoolwork. Abigail and Zachary both finished their math books and started new ones. They were happy to finish, but not so happy to start new ones. lol

Abigail is now working in the Rod & Staff Understanding Math 6, while Zachary is working in the 5th Rod & Staff math book.

I also had to re-install our Switched-on Schoolhouse Kentucky State History. The cd got scratched, and wouldn’t work anymore, so I had to buy a new one.  I wasn’t very happy.   But my older two had used it, so it wasn’t wasted, I was just hoping to be able to use it with all 6 kids. The new version had an option to install so as not to need the cd every time. That’s the one I chose.  🙂

Calen has started learning to play the guitar. He’s been practicing a LOT, so his fingers are really sore. He does find some weird positions to practice in, though! lol

The girls have been doing great with volleyball. For being a 1st year team, with none of the girls ever playing on a volleyball team before, and some never having played volleyball at all, they’ve done GREAT! They won a couple of games, and some of the sets in the games they lost. They have a game on Tuesday, and possibly one later in the week, then the season is over.  The girls are disappointed the season is over!

They’ve been practicing on the front porch. Since they’re used to playing in the gym, they don’t like to practice on the grass. No broken windows yet!

Speaking of volleyball, Abby has been drawing lots of volleyballs in the last week or so. I found these pictures she had taken on the memory card.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

January 6, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We’ve had a good homeschool week. Even though some of us are still getting over a cold, we were able to stay on track and get our work done.

I’ve been using REAL Homeschool Spanish with Zach, 11, and Abby, 13.  I received it as part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew. We are all loving it. If your looking for a spanish curriculum for the whole family, check out my review.

Today in their home ec studies, the girls made Strawberry Fruit Bars from the Vintage Remedies for Girls book.

They did a great job. They family loved them. I can’t eat them, but they look awesome.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

December 23, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We still have the cold going through the house. sigh. As soon as one gets better, someone else gets sick. I am truly thankful that it is just a cold. It makes for long homeschool week, though, when the kids don’t feel good and don’t feel like working. The fact that Mama doesn’t feel good, makes it even worse.

I cancelled Sabbath Week this week, due to kids not working as hard as they should. I have also cancelled our vacation week next week. This will be the first time in I don’t even know how many years that we haven’t taken the month of December off. We didn’t do a lot of crafting and extra baking this year, so we might as well keep working.

Recently, the kids made silly putty using this video:

Yes, they are goofy! lol And if you use too much food coloring, it will color your hands!

It did wash off pretty easily, though. They weren’t green for days. lol
