Saturday On The Farm

Saturday on the Farm

After last weeks Get Real Edition, I still haven’t finished the weeding. I really must rally the troops and get the weeding done.

Despite our not weeding, the plants are looking good.

The peas have a ton of blossoms on them.
These are the sugar snap peas, the kind where you eat the whole pod. So yummy and just about ready!
I’ve already eaten the first raspberry of our plants. There are a lot more coming. I would love to be able to freeze some raspberries, but we eat them as soon as they are ready. We are getting more plants every year that are coming up, so eventually, I hope to have enough to freeze for the winter and to sell.
I haven’t posted about the goats in a few weeks. The kids are getting big, and are just about ready to sell. My husband finally got the fence fixed so they don’t get out anymore to eat all my plants.
The first litter of kittens are also ready to leave their mothers and go to new homes. I can’t wait for that! lol

I put the flower pictures in another post.

Ok, it’s time for the Saturday on the Farm Carnival!

Saturday on the Farm

It’s the Saturday on the Farm – Get Real Edition!

Let’s see…..I could list the reasons why I haven’t been out working in the gardens, suffice it to say, the gardens are very neglected.

These pictures are in our main vegetable garden. Some of the cabbages are doing well. The heads are just starting to form.

And then some of the cabbages look like this. Pretty sad, huh? The cabbage worms have had a feast. I’m going to get some self rising flour to sprinkle on the cabbages. That works to kill cabbage worms. I’ll try that first, then get some BT San Diego is I absolutely have to. A couple of years ago, they got so bad we had to.
On one end of the garden we have the spinach and lettuces. If you can actually find them through the weeds. I had to part the weeds to take a picture.

See the spinach hiding in this picture? We have been eating lettuce and spinach a few times a week. They’re producing enough for salads. We’ve had a lot of rain in the past week, and the weeds are just growing like crazy.

Not all areas of the garden are covered in weeds, though.

Here’s a little bell pepper. Isn’t it cute? I saw quite a few blossoms on the plants, looks like we’ll have plenty of peppers. I love to have enough to freeze to use over the winter.

We’re trying a new kind of green bean that the neighbor gave us. They certainly are growing well. The are very bushy, and are just starting to grow up the fence. I don’t see any blossoms yet, though.

On the other side of the green beans, there are some squash plants in the cardboard. Yeah, there are a few weeds coming up in the cracks. I need to get out there and patch them.

The worst part of the garden, as far as weeds, is where the lettuce and spinach are. I must get out there and weed! The last couple of days have been so hot and humid it’s unbearable to be out more than a few minutes. I went out this morning to take a picture, and the lens on my camera fogged up it was so humid!

I put the flower pictures in another post.

Saturday on the Farm

This week, we’ve been eating spinach and lettuce for the garden. So good!

Over the winter, I had to take all the rocks from my herb garden to use in another project. So on Thursday, I put new rocks in. Abby helped me carry and place them. Eventually, there will be a block wall 2 blocks high, with cap stones on top, so I can sit on it while tending my herbs. But for now, I like the rocks.

The horehound didn’t come back this year. So I will have to plant more. I have never been able to get rosemary to grow in this garden, but I shall try again this year. I also need to get the annual herbs planted.
This little tin man was made by a local man. He needs another coat of paint this year, looks like. His joints are starting to rust. lol  In front of the tin man you can see a clover plant. This plant has lots of 4 leaf clovers, and we’ve even found a few 5 leafs on it.

There are a few volunteer wild strawberries in this garden. Last year, we got a few little strawberries on them. I didn’t see any blossoms this year.

I put together these little planters, and planted some herbs in them. You can see the little seedlings in the bottom pot.

The feverfew is blooming. The original plant was in the herb garden, but it seeded itself in the planter between the herb garden and the stairs, you can see it in the first picture.

The Ecinacea – purple cone flower – are getting so tall. There are a lot of buds on them. There is another little one on the right hand side of the big one. You can’t see it, because the chives have grown so big. Guess its time to trim them back.
You’ll have to excuse the weeds, the free range chickens have something against mulch. I have to get some more garden netting to put over the mulch before I can put any out. Otherwise they spread it all over the yard.

Saturday on the Farm

It’s been a peaceful week on Crooked Creek Farm. Even the animals were laying around peacefully.

Meet Samson our male Boer Cross goat. He’s laying on top of the hay trough. I don’t how that thing holds him up, because he’s big.

The garden is doing well. And as you can see from the pictures, we haven’t been able to get out there and weed. There is enough spinach ready for a salad.

And look at our first tomato! I haven’t told my husband about it yet, or he’d want to make Fried Green Tomatoes!

These are wild black raspberries growing in our yard. We thought they were blackberries at first, as we have a lot of blackberries in our year. My husband looked them up, and they are black raspberries. They are so delicious!

These buds will be red raspberries very soon.

A red raspberry blossom.

Our Red Bud tree has so many seed pods this year. The whole tree looks like this. I’ve never seen so many before.

Saturday on the Farm

This week, our major project was building a rabbit hutch. I got the idea for building it from watching this video, Self-Sufficiency: Part One, it’s a very interesting tour of this guys property. He showed these rabbit hutches, and it’s just what we needed.

This is our new rabbit hutch in our backyard.  That’s a hinged door on top. So we can fold back half of it, for access to the rabbits.
We will be covering the door in plastic to protect it from the weather. We still might paint the wood. Beast, the large male on the left, was chewing the wood shortly after being moved into his new home. We’ll have to wait and see if he stops, Hopefully, he does,  or he really will be eating himself out of house and home!
We have chicken wire on the sides, and wire with small square openings in it, I don’t know what it’s called, on the bottom. We can rake the droppings out from under the bottom, and put them in the compost pile. Here’s a view from the top.

All the rabbits seem to really like their new home. These are pet rabbits. We would like to get fiber rabbits, though. I have been out voted on meat rabbits.

Saturday on the Farm

We got some more things planted in the garden this week. The spinach, lettuces, peas, green beans and onions are up and growing. We had 2 tomato plants given to us, and D bought some more. He also bought 12 bell pepper plants, and so many cabbage plants that I lost count. It was over 20. Guess we won’t run out of cabbage, good thing I can freeze it!

You can see the cardboard that we have spread out on the end of the garden. This is where we plant all the squashes, melons and other plants that take up a lot of room. We will cut holes in the cardboard to plant. The cardboard stops all the weeds. You can also use newspapers and hay. We’ve done that before and it works well.

The iris’s are blooming in the flower garden on the end of the house. This kind only blooms once. You can barely see them, but there are purple iris’s among the yellow ones. Just ignore the weeds. 🙂

I found an awesome website the other day you might like, Organic Gardening and Homesteading. I found so much useful information there. This site has a wealth of information for everyone.

About Linda

Hi, thanks for stopping by for a visit.

My name is Linda, but you probably already knew that!

Grab a cup of coffee, tea, or in my case, homemade hot chocolate, and stay awhile!

I am a Christian, married, stay at home, mom of 6, Mimi to 2,  living in the Hills of Kentucky

I grew up in church, and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior as a young teen.

I met my husband in church and we have been married for almost 40 years. Yes, really!

The Lord has blessed us with 6 children. A son 35, a daughter 33, a son 26, a daughter 25, a daughter 23, and a son 21. 3 boys and 3 girls all in His time.

I’ve been on a health and wellness journey for a couple of years. I found some great supplements that have helped me tremendously. You can email me, or check out my social media, where I sometimes post more information.

We homeschooled our kids from the beginning, formally when our oldest started Kindergarten in 1991.  We finished homeschooling when our youngest graduated in 2019. That would be 27 years. It’s hard to believe that we homeschooled, and survided, for 27 years. And now it’s all over. It’s a whole new world for me! I’m still figuring out what I want my send half to look like!

I stay pretty busy cooking the majority of our food from scratch, taking care of our gardens and animals, and volunteering at our church. Oh, and one of our parents lives with us. that keeps me pretty busy, too!

We work in the clothes ministry at our church’s outreach center. Which means we gather all the donated clothes, sort them out and keep clothing stocked in the clothes closet. We open the clothes closet once a week for people in the community to come and get free clothing and whatever household items are donated. We also open on an emergency need basis, and have large clothes giveaways once or twice a year.

I thank you so much for visiting! If your looking for me, I can be found in the schoolroom (it’s actually now a library/office, but that’s where you’ll find lots of homeschool posts), the kitchen, outside somewhere, or just hanging out

If you want to talk, you can email me at lindaslunacy@gmail.com. You can also find me on Twitter,  Facebook,  and Instagram.

Thanks again for visiting, hope to see you again soon!
