The Old Testament Handbook Review

Having the right reference books can make Bible study so much easier, and rewarding. Sometimes, the Old Testament can be difficult to follow, and understand. So I was excited to hear about the new The Old Testament Handbook. I have not been disappointed!

The Old Testament Handbook Review

Not only is this a beautiful hardback book, The Old Testament Handbook is made to last. Cloth covered, with the title embossed in gold on the front, and on the spine. An attached ribbon bookmark, and a sewn binding, lends to its durability. It has a very elegant look and feel to it. The book looks great on a shelf, or displayed on your coffee table.

The back cover has a slip on paper jacket with all the information about the book.

I have loved going through this book. I will use this as my go to book for Bible study, since all of the books of the Old Testament is included.

At church, my pastor has been preaching through Genesis, so that’s the first chapter I checked out. Not too hard to find, as that’s the first book of the Bible. lol This book is filled with beautiful artwork. Every book has an in-depth introduction page like this one.

Old Testament Study Helps

There are timelines, maps, charts, illustrations, and other visual helps for every book of the Old Testament.

There are more than 75 in-depth word studies of keywords found in each Old Testament book. These are incredibly helpful during Bible study. Each word study takes you back to the original Hebrew word. It also gives you the pronunciation! Who doesn’t need help with that?! lol

The many charts in the book are comprehensive, as well as easy to read. They contain so much information, like The Hebrew Prophets in History below. it features the Prophet, the approximate dates, their location/home, the basic Bible passage, their central teaching, and their key verse. These are not charts that you will just refer to once.

Whether you want a reference book for your own studies, to help you teach, or to share the Bible with others, I highly recommend The Old Testament Handbook! It would make an awesome gift, too!

A Christmas for the Ages Movie Review

It was so fun to see how Christmas was celebrated across the decades. The decorations, the food, the clothes, and the music. Watching someone eat a green Jello mold with cottage cheese and pineapple was funny. lol Seeing an aluminum tree makes me thankful that trend hasn’t come back. lol

The movie might feel a little slow moving at times. But just listen. It’s a very heartfelt movie. You’ll also hear some gems like my favorite quote from A Christmas for the Ages:

Honestly I think it’s still good old Christmas, I mean Jesus born in the manager, family togetherness, gifts. I mean that’s the constant isn’t it? Your great grandmother was right. Times may change, but every year we can always count on Christmas to bring us together.

And this one……

That’s the beauty of it, really. We’re all ages, all individuals but we come together and love one another just as God loves us. That’s family.

I loved the end of the movie. All 4 ladies sang together songs from the decades in a Christmas show. They are all so talented. Their husbands and boyfriends all joined them onstage as well.

I very much enjoyed watching A Christmas for the Ages. It’s suitable for the whole family.

Surprised by Oxford Movie Review

The new movie Surprised by Oxford is based on Surprised by Oxford: A Memoir, an award winning book by Carolyn Weber. I was recently able to watch a screener of this new movie about life’s biggest question. Enter the giveaway below to win a Vimeo code to watch this new movie.

Synopsis: Caro Drake, a brilliant but emotionally guarded American student, arrives at the University of Oxford with the goal of attaining her PhD. Through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man, she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love.

Ever since she was a little girl, Caro, played by Rose Reid, wanted to earn a doctorate. Since her father abandoned her and her mother, Carolyn wasn’t sure she would even be able to attend college. But she received a scholarship , as long as she kept A’s in all classes for all 4 years. Wow, that was quite an accomplishment!

She was advised to apply to Oxford for post graduate studies in literature. She never dreamt that she would receive a full ride scholarship! So off she was to study in a country that she had never been to before.

Surprised by Oxford Movie Review

Caro was an agnostic when she arrived at Oxford. During her time there, she she had many conversations about faith with fellow students, and professors. Including a certain young man, Kent, played by Ruairí O’Connor. He was very religious, and they both knew they couldn’t get involved because of their differing beliefs.

Because of these conversations, and her own desire to fill the God shaped void in herself, Caro came to faith in God.

There is no defining moment of Caro’s coming to faith in this movie. Her faith grows slowly, conversation by conversation. Surprised by Oxford is not an overly religious movie. There is no mention of the Bible, no church services, no sermons, no songs. It’s definitely a different approach than the typical faith based movie. I felt like there was more time spent telling the story of Carolyn and Kent’s relationship than there was of Caro’s relationship with God.

One of my favorite quotes from the movie:

“I believe there is grace all around us. We just have to have the humility to admit we need it.” Provost Regina King played by Phyllis Logan, from Downton Abby fame.

Carolyn earned her doctorate in romantic literature, and later became the first female dean of St. Peter’s College. That certain young man, proposed on a hill overlooking the city of Oxford.

Today, Dr. Carolyn Weber is a mother of 4, a professor, and a celebrated author. She regularly speaks on the intersection of literature and faith.

After Death Movie Review

Death is something that we all deal with. But we don’t have to be afraid of death. I am a Christian, and I truly believe that. I have not had an after death experience myself, nor has any of my family and friends. However, I have watched interviews and read books of people that have. I really liked that After Death incorporates doctors and scientists with the peoples stories.

While the After Death movie is rated PG-13, some of the stories and scenes are pretty intense. If you have young teenagers that are sensitive, you might want to watch it first to see if it’s appropriate for your teen.

There are many things that I loved about After Death. I loved the positive message about faith and hope. Grace and Forgiveness. The main thing is the evidence that there truly is life after death. After Death doesn’t try to scare you into believing. We all have to make up our own minds about spiritual matters. After Death presents the evidence and stories in a way that I feel is straight forward and matter of fact, with no pressure.
