What’s For Dinner?

November 12, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

It was so nice out this past Saturday, that we decided to have a cookout. By the time the grocery shoppers got home, the sun and gone down and it got cold. So we cooked the hot dogs in a grill pan inside. lol On Sunday afternoon, we had a fire in the fire pit and made the S’mores. The kids were happy, as long as they got a fire and s’mores. lol

On Friday, I’m going to try making Tater Tot Casserole with diced baked potatoes instead of store bought tater tots. We’ll see how it goes over with the family!

The Menu:

Saturday – Sabbath- Make ahead meals- Hot dogs, potato salad, chips

Sunday – soup & sandwich day – Homemade chicken soup and homemade potato soup

Monday – chicken – Baked Chicken, baked potatoes, Pepper Jelly Glazed Carrots, peas

Tuesday – pizza/pasta – Homemade  pizza using our homemade pizza crust, with pepperoni, chicken, onions & peppers with carrot sticks

Wednesday – super simple – Taco Rice, zucchini

Thursday – beef – Cincinnati Style Chili with onions, beans & cheese, corn on the cob

Friday – Sabbath Dinner – Tater Tot Casserole, except using diced baked potatoes, instead of store bought tater tots , green beans

Bible in 90 Days Check In

November 11, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

This is it! We are beginning week 13! Our final week. Can you believe it? It has gone by fast. And it other ways, it has seem much, much longer. Anybody else feel that way?

Ok, I am still behind. I will have to read 2 days every day to finish on time. But I will finish!!

We can ALL do this and finish together!!

Don’t forget the Bible in 90 Days Twitter Party!  To make keeping up with the party easier, they’ve started a TweetGrid for the parties. Here’s the link:

http://tweetgrid.com/grid?l=2&q1=%23B90days&q2=From%3AMomsToolBox+OR+From%3AJulieDutch&q3=TO%3A_YourUserName&htag=B90Days

You can follow all the posts with the #B90Days tag. Just do a search on Twitter for #B90Days, and the results should be all the posts with that hashtag. I don’t spend very much time on Twitter, but I have attended a few Twitter parties. They can be a fun way to gather with others. I personally can’t keep up with them. lol The Tweetgrid linked above looks like a great way to follow the conversation.

Don’ts for Catching up With the Bible in 90 Days

You Are Here in the Bible (Ted Cooper of the Bible in 90 Days Ministry created You are Here in the Bible to help Bible in 90 Days readers get a snapshot of most of the books of the Bible as they were reading. His aim was to keep readers reading and not researching, therefore preserving more time for reading the entire Bible.  This link takes you to page of links to each of his entries.) These You Are Here in the Bible pages are great for yourself, or to do together as a family.

Ok, it’s time to leave a comment below with your progress.

God bless you in your journey to read The Bible in 90 Days!

A Simpler Season eBook Review

November 10, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I received a copy of the ebook A Simpler Season by Jessica Fisher to read and review. Jessica Fisher blogs over at Life as Mom. I was interested in reading this book, and I wasn’t disappointed. Whether your a newlywed trying to blend family traditions together or someone like me whose kids (some of them) are grown and married, no matter the stage in life your at, you’ll find helpful information in A Simpler Season.

With chapters including Family Life at the Holidays, Holiday Time Management, Home Management, Holiday Feasting, and more, A Simpler Season is an awesome guide to planning the winter holidays. You’ll find inspiration, ideas, and tips, for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.  This book is over 150 pages including recipes, children’s activity sheets, planning sheets, calendars, and tutorials for homemade gifts. There are even over 20 family activity cards to print and do over the month of December.

I love that she has included several worksheets to help you decide what you want from the holidays, and to combine family holiday traditions. You can either write the answers on paper, or print out the sheets and write directly on them. (Printable pages not included in the Kindle edition, but can be purchased separately.) There are also many to do lists to help you in your planning.

I am in the midst of planning our family Thanksgiving dinner, (I’ll deal with Christmas after that!), and I plan on using A Simpler Season to help me make it a great family time.

You can purchase the A Simpler Season eBook at Life as Mom Simpler Season for $9.00.

The Kindle version of A Simpler Season is available on Amazon for $6. (Not my affiliate link)

You can purchase the A Simpler Season Printable Pages Pack separately in the Life as Mom Store for $3.

Every family needs their own copy of A Simpler Season so they can enjoy a peaceful and joyful holiday season together as a family.

Our Homeshool Week in Review

November 9, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The girls played in their first volleyball game of the season last Friday. Unfortunately, they lost both games they played.  🙁  Some of the scores were pretty close, like 25-23. A “game” is actually the best two out of three games. All the girls are practicing hard, though, so hopefully they will have a win soon! I really must get them to pose for a picture in the new uniforms they got this year. The league they play in requires modest clothing, and the girls have to wear culottes to their knees. I love it! I wish all sports required modest clothing for girls and boys.

They also had volleyball practice two nights this week. Add that to Abby’s youth praise team practice, singing at an event, church Sunday and Wednesday, Calen working at church on the electronics, movie night at church, and a visit for an MRI for one of the kids and it’s been a busy week! I think I’m leaving some stuff out, too!

Oh, on Election Day, my son who just turned 18 the last week of October, voted for the first time! Very exciting! He was nervous, and kept trying to back out. I told him he had to vote, not because I knew who he was going to vote for, because he would look back the next day, week, month, year, and say I wish I had voted. So he voted and he survived. lol I wanted to take a picture, but was not able to. I pulled my cellphone out to take a picture of him behind the voting booth and asked the attendant if it was ok. He told me no, I couldn’t take a picture. Another on there said I could as long as I didn’t get one of the voting screen (from across the room? On the other side of the machine?). So I ended up not taking a picture. What if the first guy was right, and I got arrested? I didn’t feel like risking jail. lol

I haven’t mentioned Sabbath Week very much lately. We’re still doing 6 weeks on and one week off. Except for this last Sabbath Week. Some of the kids hadn’t been working diligently enough, so I cancelled Sabbath Week. You can imagine how that went over! lol I’m hoping they learned their lesson and we don’t have to do that again. Because I like my Sabbath Week, too!!

My husband started something new in our family Bible reading time recently. We go around the room taking turns reading the verses from that nights selection. Since some of us use different versions of the Bible, it can get quite interesting. lol It is a good way to compare the different translations, though.

Have you seen this video about how to start a fire with an orange?

Looks pretty cool! Now the question is, am I brave enough to let my kids try this?!

Grace and Truth Books – Review

November 8, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Schoolhouse Review Crew, I received two books from Grace & Truth Books Heritage Series Books for boys to review. I received Gerrit and His Dog, as well as A Faithful Boys Influence. I had my 12 year old, 6th grade son read these books.

Photobucket

So you’re looking for Christian books online. You’ve not only come to the right place, you’ve also come to a very different place. Because Grace and Truth Books isn’t a Christian bookstore that follows the latest trends. We know that the truth of our Lord Jesus Christ has nothing to do with fancy packaging or attempting to resemble secular literature or media. This online Christian book store is built on a different approach: what will glorify God, strengthen His people in their walk, and call all peoples to find joy in knowing His gospel and following Him.

That definitely sounds like a bookstore I want to shop at!

Photobucket

Gerrit and His Dog, for boys ages 8-12, sells for $5.50. This book is a reprint. I had never read it before, but I found it to be a delightful story about a boy and his dog. Gerrit and his dog Brownie get separated, unfortunately by Gerrit’s uncle. This story follows Gerrit, and Brownie and shows how God was watching over both of them while they were separated. And their joyful reunion. Gerrit and His Dog will teach your boys about sympathy and compassion.

This volume also contains a 2nd story, The Royal Law. the Royal Law follows a poor boy and his family as their lives are transformed by the grace of God. This transformation takes place when they learn about Jesus’ great commandment – doing unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Here’s what Zach had to say about these books:

Gerrit and His Dog – “It was a good story. Gerrit is my favorite character in the story. ”
The Royal Law – “It’s a good story. Hans and Hester are my favorite characters.”

Ok, he basically said the same thing about both books. However, both of these books are good stories. I read them myself, even though I’m not a boy.  🙂

The second book I received was A Faithful Boy’s Influence, for boys ages 6-12, which sells for $6.25. A Faithful Boy’s Influence is a reprint of the book  All Can Help.

Zach is in the middle of reading this book and he’s really liking it.

Charlie Clement was a visitor at the home of relatives for a year, and his visit brought about great changes in the minds and attitudes of both the townspeople and even the local pastor. Charlie’s admirable character was an encouragement to everyone he met and many learned to imitate his walk with the Lord. This wonderful children’s book, about how a young boy initiated respect for God’s servant by a good example, will mold your children’s character in an important area.

Also, a second part of the book includes Herbert Dawson’s Ears For Little Gleaners, a collection of lessons from 19th-century Sunday school books on what true treasure is, how to find wisdom, keep away from sin, and several more.

Both the first story and the collection of Sunday School lessons in this book sound great, and I can’t wait to read it myself. I have to wait until he’s done, though. I hope he hurries! lol

Courting Cate – Book Review

November 8, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

When This Couple Gets to Courting, Sparks Will Fly!

In Paradise, Pennsylvania, Cate Miller is known more for her sharp tongue and fiery temper than her striking appearance. Her sweet and flirty sister, Betsy, on the other hand, seems to have attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County!

But the sisters’ wealthy father has made one hard-and-fast rule: older Cate must marry first, before younger Betsy can even start courting. Unfortunately, untamable Cate has driven away every suitor-until Pete Treger comes to town, that is.

Prodded by the men of the area, Pete turns his attention to winning Cate’s hand. But is his interest true or is there a scheme at play?
Courting Cate is Book 1 in The Courtships of Lancaster County series. Link to buy the book: http://ow.ly/eSNfb (Not my affiliate link)

MY REVIEW:

I really enjoyed reading Courting Cate. The Amish deal with many of the same things in life that non-Amish deal with. I like how the author, Leslie Gould, includes several of these in Courting Cate. It makes this book more realistic, and really draws you into the story.

Cate and her sister couldn’t be more different. Their fathers ultimatum drives a wedge between the sisters. Because Cate has been a mother to her sister since she was a baby and loves her very much, she does everything she possible can to make a way for her sister to marry. Including entering a loveless marriage.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
