Amazing Animals by Design – Book Review

March 31, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew, I received a PDF version of the new book Amazing Animals by Design.

Photobucket

Amazing Animals by Design is designed for elementary school aged children, Pre-K through 3rd grade.

Why is a giraffe’s neck so tall? Why do zebras have stripes? Did all of these things happen by accident? When John and Sarah visit the zoo, they ask these questions and many more. Their parents and the zookeepers keep using the word design, but what does that mean? With its relevant message and exciting presentation, this is the perfect book to help introduce children to intelligent design. Come find out in Amazing Animals by Design by Debra Haagen!  – from the Amazing Animals by Design website.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Amazing Animals by Design introduces young children to Intelligent Design. This is a perfect book to read before a visit to the zoo or other animal habitat. At 24 pages long, it’s also a great daily reading book. You know how kids love to read the same book over and over! Amazing Animals by Design will educate and entertain them. I love the sweet, calm, and peaceful drawings in the book. I have only read the book on my computer, but I imagine the drawings are equally as good in the print book. Amazing Animals by Design would make a great gift as well.

Saturday on the Farm

March 31, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Last week, I mentioned making Red Bud Jelly. Well, I made it! You can read all about it in my Red Bud Jelly post.

Here’s this weeks tour:

Dogwood Flower

We have several Red Bud and Dogwood Trees. I love it when they bloom at the same time. These two trees are in the back yard by the creek.

Red Bud Tree Dog Wood Tree

I found this flower growing down on the edge of the creek. I had one of the boys move it.

I moved it to this new garden in the back yard right next to the creek. The creek is between the green in the front, and the mud hill in the back. When we divided the Hostas from the front yard, I put them here and off to the right of this picture. You can see the yellow of the flower above on the left behind the Hostas. Also in this garden are some Wild Iris’s and Wild Roses.

While I was out for my picture walk, I took one of the front yard. The Bible Garden is on the end of the house, you can see a little sliver of it. There is another Front Garden on the other side of the porch. You can see the red of the Tulip in the Front Bulb Garden.

The Apple trees are blooming. So pretty!

Here’s our line of Apple Trees. My husband transplanted all these trees from up on the hill a few years ago. We got enough apples last year to make a small batch of apple cider. I froze it, and we drank it on Thanksgiving. It was sooooo good! I hope we get more apples this year for more cider. My inlaws next door (the brown house with the white shutters) have a couple of big apple trees and they share with us. Those are the ones we use for pies and applesauce. Hopefully, in a couple of years, we’ll be apple self sufficient. lol You can also see the fence of Raspberries in this picture. We actually need another fence, as lots of new vines are coming up.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

March 30, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Sunday night, I looked at the calendar and realized that this week was Sabbath Week for us! The kids were very happy! I have to say I was happy, too!

We’ve had a nice, peaceful Sabbath Week.

We worked in the gardens some. Some worked on crafts and computers. And they’ve had lots of playtime with cousins.

Last Sunday, Hannah and Zachary had their Church Bible Drill Competitions. There was one other little boy in Zacks drill. I felt so sorry for Zack. He froze. 🙁  After a few questions, he pulled it together and finished great. He scored high enough to go on to the Association Drill. I told him I was so proud of him for not running off the stage. For staying and fighting through it, to pull it together with a strong finish. A lot of kids wouldn’t have stayed and tried. They would have ran off the stage. A lot of adults would have, too! He’s an awesome kid!

Hannah was the only one competing in the Church Drill in the High School age group. She received a perfect score. Which is even harder to achieve when you’re the only one. You have to answer everything single question yourself, quote all the verses yourself. And the high school level has to memorize long passages. I’m so proud of her for all the hard work she put into Bible Drill this year.  Her Association Drill is this Sunday. Go Hannah!

I just found out that Hannah is writing posts for The Sewing Corner. Awesome post, Hannah! She even won this weeks Featured Blog Post award from The Homeschool Blogger Community Blog, On The Company Porch!

Red Bud Jelly

March 29, 2012 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

*This Red Bud Jelly post contains affiliate links

I mentioned Red Bud Jelly in my last Saturday on the Farm post. I was able to finish a batch yesterday. While I think the Red Bud flowers themselves taste like lettuce when eaten raw, the jelly has a fruity taste to it.

Red Bud Jelly

The Red Bud Jelly recipe I used is no longer online. Here is a similar recipe.  I was sure I had to packages of pectin left from last year. However, when I went looking, I only found one. So I had to cut the recipe in half. I got 5 jars and one little taster jar out of half the recipe. Since I had already made enough juice for a full batch, I put the rest of the juice in the freezer. I’m thinking it will be just fine for making the jelly after I get more pectin.

I like the Red Bud Jelly. Some of the kids liked it, one said he didn’t, but he’s only 11 so I forgive him. lol It has a light fruity taste. I thought I’d be able to taste the lemon juice, but I couldn’t.

Red Bud Jelly

If you have Red Buds blooming in your yard, or your neighbors yard, you might want to try eating the flowers. They are pretty in a salad, or make this jelly. Or if your like me, make your kids laugh by pulling a branch down and eating the flowers like it’s corn on the cob. lol

This is the digital canner I now use for everything. Water bath, or pressure canning. It’s so easy to use. I love it, and highly recommend it!
