The Christmas Singing

November 22, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

After Gideon coldly broke her heart, can the warmth of the season revive Mattie’s hopes?

Mattie thought her childhood sweetheart adored her until he abruptly ended their engagement on Christmas Eve.

Three years later, will learning the truth behind his rejection restore her Christmas joy – or open the door to even deeper heartbreak?

Spend Christmas with the Amish in this story of love, romance, heartache, and restoration.

The Christmas Singing is Cindy Woodsmall’s latest book. A romance from the heart of Amish Country just in time for Christmas.

Mattie has spent her whole life taking care of her sick mother. When her sweetheart ends their engagement on Christmas Eve, she moves to another city. She persues the dream she has had for a long time. Opening a bakery. She also enters into a relationship with a new beau. When her bakery burns down, she returns home to recuperate and spend time with her mother.

However, moving home means seeing her old beau on a regular basis. Her hurts run deep, how can she handle seeing him all the time? With Christmas coming up, she has several decisions to make. One very important decision is weighing heavy on her heart. Who shall she go to the Christmas singing with?

The Christmas Singing is a quick read, just the kind of book needed at this busy time of year. A heartwarming story of love and forgiveness that will set the tone for a wonderful Christmas season.

You can read an excerpt or Read Chapter One of The Christmas Singing.

FFH – One Silent Night – Review & Giveaway

November 21, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

FFH has released their first ever Christmas album!

Press Release for FFH:
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Sept. 30, 2011– Best-selling pop group FFH will usher in the holiday season with its first Christmas album. One Silent Night, available Oct. 18, is a mix of original songs and Christmas classics.

Produced by FFH founding member Jeromy Deibler, One Silent Night has been four years in the making. Giving in to the persistent appeals of loyal fans, FFH has crafted a project worthy of your holiday music collection.

Listeners will recognize favorites like “Winter Wonderland,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” among others, while being introduced to new tracks including “The Birthday of a King,” “Glorious Impossible,” and “One Silent Night.”

Deibler comments, “We just feel blessed to be able to make this record and wanted to do the kind of Christmas music we like to listen to, something that’s not trendy but more of a classic style. For us Christmas is about remembering… slowing down to see what is important. And being reminded of the glorious impossible that was the birth of Christ. We hope this album reflects that desire and inspires others to do the same.”

FFH plans to support the album with singles “One Silent Night” and “Baby It’s Cold Outside” to radio Oct. 1 as well as select tour dates in November and December.

About FFH
Pop vocal group FFH has released thirteen projects, sold more than two million albums, and garnered 24 radio hits, including seven No. 1 singles and ten Top 5 radio singles. In addition to multiple Dove Award nominations, FFH has been recognized at the Inspirational Life Awards as well as the Billboard Music Video Awards. The group has performed more than 1000 dates since 2000 and continues to be a favorite on the tour circuit. FFH is also known for its work with the “Make-A-Wish Foundation,” Kurt Warner’s “First Things First Foundation,” and for its contributions to national ad campaigns for Coca Cola and IBM.

I love this Christmas album! In addition to several of everyone’s favorite Christmas songs, there are 3 new songs, “The Birthday of a King,” “Glorious Impossible,” and “One Silent Night.” I really love the chorus of One Silent Night:

One Silent Night
One Holy Night
When all was calm
When all was bright
With no one to kneel
And no one to see
Heaven came down
And changed everything.
Man on the earth
Receive her King.

The music on this album varies widely with something for everyone, from slow songs to fun, upbeat songs. My kids have enjoyed listening to this album with me. Even though it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. lol

FFH has their own You Tube Music Channel, but, alas, there are no songs from this new album. You can, however, listen to clips on iTunes

You can also visit FFH on their website, Facebook and Twitter.
Thanks to Propeller, I get to give away one download of their album. No cd, the winner will receive a special link and can then download the album to their computer. Just complete the Rafflecopter entry form below!

Homemade Sloppy Joes

November 21, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I love Sloppy Joes. And homemade is the best!

Homemade Sloppy Joes

Homemade Sloppy Joes

2 pounds hamburger (or ground turkey or a combination)

1 medium onion, diced

1- 29 ouce can tomato sauce

2 tablespoons worcheshire sauce

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (or less, to your taste)

3 tablespoons sugar

salt and pepper to taste

Brown hamburger and onions until cooked through. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer for 15-2o minutes.

I used pre-cooked hamburger that I like to keep in the freezer. In that case, I add the onions and remaining ingredients and simmer until onions are done, checking often and adding water as needed.

You can also prepare in the crockpot: Add cooked hamburger and other ingredients, cook on low until needed.

You can also add diced green peppers if your family likes those in Sloppy Joes.

I served mine on gluten free garlic french bread. I prefer to eat my Sloppy Joes with a fork.  🙂

Yum!!

Saturday on the Farm

November 19, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

It’s been cold this week! One morning it was 19! Since we’ve been covering and uncovering the remaining vegetables in our garden, I decided it was time to pull them. Here’s what was left- turnips, radishes and a few lettuce leaves.

I turned my 2 helpers loose, and they picked it all.

We got a few good sized radishes. The turnips didn’t get big. I probably didn’t plant them early enough in August. We don’t normally eat turnip greens, but I read recently about dehyrdating them and then crushing into small pieces. this article said you couldn’t taste them in soup, and people just thought the green specks were herbs. I’m wondering if I can trick my family into eating them?

I have one lone rosebud in the Bible garden. I hope it’s open in time for Thanksgiving. And that it doesn’t die before then.

I have some peppermint still growing in the herb garden.

I transplated some into a pot to keep in the house.

I’m a horrible transplanter/potter. You know how on tv they can pot a plant without even getting their hands dirty? Well, not me! I get dirt everywhere. lol I hope it survives. lol

Do you still having anything growing or blooming or, like me, have you given up for the year?

Read Naturally – Read Live Review

November 19, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

As part of the The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Review team I received a free trail subscription to Reading Naturally Read Live.

Photobucket

Read Naturally is proud to introduce Read Live, our newest assessment and intervention program.

This comprehensive, research-based program includes Benchmark Assessor Live for screening students for overall reading proficiency and our newest intervention program, Read Naturally Live, with curriculum that supports fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and phonics.  -from the Read Naturally website

Photobucket

I found the set up a little difficult, but after re-reading the directions a couple of times, I was able to get it done without having to calling tech support. They do have a video to help with set up, also.

The first step to using Read Naturally is assessment. The assessment involves reading 3 grade level passages. these are printed out for the student to read. While the student is reading, the teacher is usng the program to time the reading and also mark any words missed. I used Read Live with my 11 year old son.

Once you start the lesson, the child picks a story from one of the 12 available on that level.  Before starting to read, the kids see a list of key words that will be in the story. They can click on the words to get the pronounciation and definition. The student thens write a prediction of the story, what the child thinks the story will be about.

At the beginning and end of the lesson, the teacher is needed. In between, the student can work alone. At the top of the page it will say “Teacher Present” if the teacher is needed. While waiting for the teacher to come, the program gives the kids questions with the Wordtastic vocabulary game . My son actually enjoyed this part. A few times he was working on these when I told him it was time to start the lesson and he said he wanted to finish those questions first.

Here is the order of the lessons:

Key Words
Predictions
Cold Timing
Read Along
Practice
Quiz
Retell
Pass

In this video, you can follow along as a lesson is done.

Read Naturally has 27 videos to help you get the most out of the program for your child.

There is a status bar across the top, so the child can easily see where they are and how much more they have to do. The kids do need to type their responses for the predictions and retell sections of the lesson. My son can not yet type beyond hunt and peck. He got discouraged with the typing and didn’t want to do more than one sentence. So I had him dictate to me and I typed it in. That worked much better for him. I was able to get better responses to the questions.

When you get to the Pass section of the lesson, which the teacher has to sign into with their own ID and password, the child reads the story and the teacher counts any errors and rates the childs reading expression. The childs goals are then displayed along with their cold and hot timing scores. The teacher then grades the questions, with the program giving you sample answers and the teacher decides if the students answers are correct. The teacher also reads and grades the students retelling of the story. The teacher decides if the retelling is correct or not. Therefore, it is easy to customize the requirements for your child. After the teacher has graded these, a screen comes up with the students scores and tells the student if they passed.

My son really likes using Read Naturally. I thought he wouldn’t like having to read the story more than once, but he didn’t have a problem with it. I think he sees it as a competion, and tried hard to beat his score each time. He reminds me “Mom, I have to do that reading thing!”

Here’s what he had to say about Read Naturally:

“It’s good. I liked it. I liked reading the story about Walt Disney.  I don’t want to read the story about the snake. lol”

As you can probably tell, I didn’t tell him what to say. He doesn’t like snakes and the story about Walt Disney as a boy made an impression on him. I found the stories to be interesting and informative. And most importantly, my son did, too.

Reading Live is recommend for grades 1-8, however it can be used up through adults as an intervention program. A 12 month subscription is $149 for one student. If one of your children completes the program before your subscription is up, though, you can reassign the program to another of your students. Right now, you can sign up for a free 60 day trail of Read Live. I think it’s great that Reading Naturally offers this free trail. It’s hard to tell how your student will do in the program just by reading the description. With this free trail, you can try out the actual Read Live program with your child.

For more information, visit the Reading Naturally website. Reading Naturally also has a Facebook Page.

Our Homeschool Week in Review

November 18, 2011 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

The girls played their first every volleyball game this week! Here they are leaving for the game. They play for a homeschool team. None of the 12 girls on the team had played on a volleyball team before.

They actually played 2 games against a Christian school in another town. Unfortunately, they lost both games. 25-5 and 25-9. They have at least 2 more games tomorrow. It’s a tournament, if they win, they will play more than 2 games. They are doing very well for just starting, I think. The coach is a homeschool dad and he’s very good with them.

While the girls were out practicing volleyball in our yard yesterday, Hannah noticed the clouds in the sky and took a bunch of pictures. This is one of them.

Hannah is working through a Digital Photography Unit Study by Amanda Bennet. She likes photography, and is working through this at her own pace.

Zach is doing great with his reading. He’s reading through Berrenstain Bears books now, only having to ask what unfamiliar words are.

Calen was happy to finish Algebra 1 a before our Sabbath week last week. This week he started working in a math book called Applying Mathematics – A Consumer/Career Approach and he likes it MUCH better than algebra.

I have a review going up tomorrow for another great product from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine Homeschool Review Crew. Zach and I both loved it! Check back tomorrow to see what it it!
