Hallelujah

August 8, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Hallelujah is a Hebrew word meaning “Praise Yahweh”. Yahweh is God’s name. Therefore, Hallelujah means praise God.

The Bible has a lot to say about praising the Lord. Here’s just a few verses:

Psalm 7:17
I will praise the LORD according to His righteousness,And will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Psalm 9:1
[ To the Chief Musician. To the tune of “Death of the Son.” A Psalm of David. ] I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart;I will tell of all Your marvelous works.

Psalm 9:2
I will be glad and rejoice in You;I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.

Ephesians 1:12
that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

Hebrews 13:15
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

We tend to praise other people or things before we praise God.

We should Praise the Lord because HE alone is worthy of our praise!

Hallelujah!!!

Blog Hop ’10

August 8, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Get-attachment.aspx

I just found out about Blog Hop ’10 hosted by Pensieve, and thought it would be fun to join.

So……..I have to write an introduction……hmmmmmm…….

Okay, I’m Me!

Oh, a little more detail?  Ok…..

I started Linda’s Lunacy back in November of 2003. I have 6 kids, and my middle son was having treatments for leukemia (he’s fine now!). We were homeschooling the oldest 4, and our youngest was three. Was our life ever crazy!

A friend told me I should start a blog, and the rest is history.

Linda’s Lunacy is about my faith, my family, our farm, and our homeschool. It’s also about what I feed my family, the things I make, and the things we do.

Basically, it’s a little bit of everything. Hence the name. Linda’s Lunacy.

Thanks for stopping by to visit! If you leave a comment, I’ll return the visit.

Saturday On The Farm

August 7, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

Saturday on the Farm

It has been such a hot week! We had heat warnings a couple of days this week, with the heat index of 105-110. So needless to say, not much got done outside!

I thought the hens had stopped laying because of the heat. Turns out, they were laying, they were just hiding them in one of the flower gardens!

Crazy hens! They weren’t trying to sit, they were just hiding them.
One of our neighbors stopped by and gave us some corn. A lot of corn!

That’s not even all of it! We had a corn husking party. Our four kids, a nephew and my husband gathered around the table to work. I put on music, and started getting the canning supplies ready. They made pretty quick work of it. Let’s not talk about what the flour looked like when they were done!

We ate corn for 3 meals, I put 30 ears in the freezer, and I canned the rest. I got 22 quarts and 1 pint.

I love my pressure canner!

Thanks to the groundhog for chewing through the vine, we had to eat a cantaloupe.

It was pretty small. It was very pretty inside.

I didn’t try any, I gave mine to the kids. My husband tasted it and said it was good, just not quite ripe. It was ripe enough to eat, but could have used a couple more days. The kids loved it, and didn’t even notice that it wasn’t quite ripe.

There’s another cantaloupe out there, hopefully the groundhog has had it’s fill of cantaloupe vine!

It’s time for the Saturday on the Farm Carnival!

To participate, just write a post about your homestead, farm, farmette, or the tomato plant on your deck. Your cows, goats, chicken, or your favorite kitty cat.

Homemade Cleaners

August 7, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

I like to make my own cleaners. Vinegar and baking soda are favorites of mine. I use vinegar for just about everything. It cleans windows to a shine, it dis-infects as it cleans sinks and counter tops. I use it as a fabric softener and a drain cleaner.

For the drain cleaner, I put baking soda down the drain, then heat up a couple of cups of vinegar, and pour down the drain. It will bubble up and clean the drains. It works well in the bathroom as well as the kitchen.

Sodium bicarbonate CNImage via Wikipedia

I sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let it sit for a few minutes, then vacuum. It freshens the carpet. If you mix a few drops of essential oils with the baking soda, before sprinkling on the carpet, it leaves a nice scent.

I make a paste of baking soda and water to spread in the oven. Let it sit for a little while, then wipe off. It will soften and clean baked on spills. For tough ones, though, you may have to repeat. I prefer to repeat the process, than use chemicals.

Here’s a recipe for Homemade All Purpose Cleaner.

Here’s a recipe for Safer Bleach Alternative

Edited to add: I just found another link for 6 cleaner recipes!

You can make all kinds of cleaners yourself. It will save you money, as well as keep chemicals out of your home. That’s a win – win combination.

Our Homeschool Week in Review #1

August 7, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

We started our school year on Monday the 2nd. We started homeschooling in 1991, when our oldest son started kindergarden. This is our 19th year of homeschooling! This year, we have a 4th grader, a 6th grader, a 9th grader, and a 10th grader.

The 9th grader finished 8th grade last December, and promptly started 9th grade. She has now finished some of the books, and is almost finished with others. Except for Algebra (Teaching Textbooks) and Spanish (Rosetta Stone), she will finish 9th grade in the next few weeks. She would like to finish High School as early as possible, so she’s working hard towards that goal.

Aside from a few “back to school” attitudes the first day or two, the week has gone well. I learned early in our home school journey, that it was easier to school all summer than to deal with the back to school attitudes. The last few  years, we have taken the month of July only off. It’s long enough for a break, but not long enough for major attitudes to develop.

Last year, we went to a 4 day school week, so we could work at our churches out reach center. It worked out well. This year we will be doing a 4 1/2 day week. With a lighter work load on the day we work at the out reach center.

We don’t normally take field trips during school days anymore. We prefer to do things together as a family.

This is what our school room looks like:

You can see in the picture, how we display wall maps. Since this picture was taken, I put a round table in front of the window. The kids don’t sit there most of the time. They just spread stuff out on the table. lol

Schoolwork is done on the schoolroom table, at the school desk in there, at the computer desks, at the dining room table, and on their beds. This is where they work most of the time, though.

That’s without all the books, notebooks and papers. lol Thanks to my son, though, the picture is complete with a Star Wars laser sword. lol

For the last 3 years, I’ve been using Homeschool Tracker I use their free Basic Edition. They do have an another version that you can buy, though. I like this better than other programs that I have tried. It also helps reduce the paper clutter. Paper clutter is a monster that I fight continuously!

W.W.W. Wednesday – My Reading List

August 5, 2010 by Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

* What are you currently reading? –    Becoming a Woman of Influence Making a Lasting Impact on Others by Carol Kent From the back cover – In this book you will learn 7 simple life changing principles Jesus used to influence others. Sounds good!

* What did you recently finish reading? Spiritual Mothering by Susan Hunt The Titus 2 Model for Women Mentoring Women   –  This is an interesting read. I did learn some things from this book. I would say that this is a book that all Christin women should read.

* What do you think you’ll read next? – Misty of Chincoteague This is based on a true story of pony round-ups that still happen today. The copy I have is from 1947, that I got on Paper Back Swap. There are newer prints available.

In addition to reading the above books, this week I continued a  Read the Bible in 90 days program. So that’s keeping me busy reading, also.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
